the oscar nominations for 2023 are reflecting something that i have known to be true for the last few years. we are truly entering a golden age for Irish cinema.
an cailĂn ciĂşin (the quiet girl) and irish language film has been nominated for best international film. this is true amazing. it reflects not only that irish films are getting the recognition that they deserve but also reflects a greater importance being placed on the irish language. this nomination is so important as it is yet another example of the relevancy of the irish language in the 21st century. how can irish possibly be a dead language when movies like an cailĂn ciĂşin are being nominated for oscars?
there have been a lot of really good irish language films made in the last few years that havenât been appreciated properly by irish people and international audiences alike. i recommended arracht or foscad for anyone wanting to watch more irish language films.
and the banshees of inisherin. to see a movie that is so deeply irish up for best picture is a dream. and the thing about this film is that itâs so like a lot of other irish films that iâve watched in the way that the story is told, the form, and the characters. for me this is nomination isnât just for the banshees of inisherin, but for all the amazing irish films that have gone mostly unnoticed because people werenât paying attention.
another thing that i love about this film is that itâs a film about irish people where theyâre just people. their irishness isnât made into a joke, theyâre not shown to be alcoholics, or thieves, or any of the other negative stereotypes that have been perpetrated in film and on stage for years. the stage irishman is no more. the landscape is appreciated for its natural beauty, thereâs no tacky filter or editing to make it bright green and blue, because as anyone living in ireland knows, this island is overwhelmingly grey.
and what more needs to be said about the actor nominations. irish talent is finally being appreciated, and not just based on how well they could do an american accent. i remember reading an article a few years about saoirse ronan that said she had to perfect that american accent or she would have ended up on fair city for the rest of her career. striking to see how this has changed. i really hope kerry condon gets her oscar, she deserves it.
i used to think if i wanted to work in film iâd have to move to america but things are changing fast and i have to say i think the best of irish film is yet to come.
iâm proud to be irish and iâm so unbelievably happy to see irish talent being recognised at the oscars this year!!!
