English 101 was actually a way better course than I had first thought. I am not the best at English so I was nervous I was going to hate the class and not know what I was doing. Something I liked about this class is that the teacher really made sure we understood the topic or even the assignment we were given. Most of the time with English I just need a more in-depth explanation or visual to understand the concept and that was done very well. One thing I think could be improved on is doing more group work during the class. This class specifically was not the most talkative so when we discussed as a whole class I felt like it lacked opinions and valuable discussions but with group work people talked more and were not as intimated to share their thoughts. However, overall it was a great class and if I had to I would take it again.

I have already seen a couple of ways in which my writing has improved this semester. I have already used knowledge that I have gained in this class outside of this classroom and even outside of school. A specific example includes when we were going over how to analyze sources and make sure they are reliable/credible. Around the same exact time, I started to write mar research paper for another class where it was extremely helpful knowing how to analyze sources. I even used my improved writing process outside of school when I was editing my resume. I found it much easier to simplify the details on my resume to keep it at only a page in length, but still have as much information as possible.

I think it is so cool that you were able to use what we have learned in this class to help your resume and better your chances at getting the job you wanted! I also agree that the writing process has been useful when writing anything to a research paper for uni to checking how reliable your sources are for a science project! I feel that many of us lacked knowledge at the beginning of this semester but are now thriving and understanding the process!!

The writing process has been very helpful outside of this English class. I have been using it on research papers for my uni and sociology classes. This process has even been helpful for my yoga class when we are informed to write a paragraph about something to do with the class I have more knowledge on what and how to write so, I can easily write the paragraph with no problems. Some might think you can only use this process for things relating to papers but, I have used it on my reports in chemistry with my outline and revising. It is nice to have someone to peer review your work and it can be more than a paper which I did not realize till recently. I have had peers review all kinda of my work to help get good criticism on my work!

The rhetorical analysis has been the most challenging for me because it is a little harder for me to analyze and document the author’s argument compared to formulating my own argument through my own research. The rest of the assignments in this class have been based on my perspective and/or an argument that I wanted to make.

My writing has improved this semester in many ways. Simply being able to create an outline and start an essay comfortably means that my writing has improved. The different revision techniques have given me much more confidence with my writing as well.

I totally agree that the rhetorical essay was the most challenging! I definitely thought that having the majority of the projects be based off of our prospectives and arguments helped the projects be a little bit easier to write. I really did not make any outlines before this class but like you, I have started to throughout this semester. I am very grateful that we have learned different techniques to revision but for other parts of the writing process and so glad to say my writing has improved in just a short couple of months!

The most challenging assignment for me would be the rhetorical essay. I really like the letter to me one because it was really easy to write about myself. I also love to design and organize so the infographic was more of a fun assignment. However the rhetorical made me think a little harder and I had to get more peer review help to help me make sure it was the best it could be! This semester my writing has improved by the flow and also when I write. What I mean by this is, I have not procrastinated and really been able to write the whole rough draft down in one sitting. I occasionally can get bored of writing and not be in the “mood” to but the rubrics have really helped my outlines so I can stay focused longer. I still feel like my grammar lacks but doesn't everyone?!?

My primary claim is that the accessibility and ease of fast food is resulting in poor health. My supporting claims are a few other reasons why people look to fast food because it’s the easier choice, like income and age. The original argument of the rhetorical analysis article was that it is the fault of the fast-food companies for not properly marketing their products with their accompanied health risks. I don’t think it is only the fault of the fast-food companies. There are a lot of other factors that go into making the decision to go through a drive thru rather than going home and cooking. In my infographic I included some of those additional factors that could play into the decision to eat fast food. For example, it’s more likely that a higher-class family to eat fast food because the parent would work a long day and would rather take their kids to McDonald’s. They also have the money to pay for it without worrying about other bills and responsibilities.

I like that you took your original article and realized your own point of view and stuck with it. I even think your side of the argument is more convincing then the original after reading both main sides I like your example about higher class and fast food. I have had many friends where they would be jealous that I ate at home almost everyday when I would be jealous they were eating out everyday haha. Your main point and supporting claims seem great and I look forward to see your finale product!

My primary claim is that Americans want more paid sick leave. The supporting claims were, where is the recover time, needing a solid fix on the problem, and sick leave is an all or nothing use. My argument is supporting the argument Amanda Mull writes about in her article. While she uses supporting claims and evidence, I also added some more statistics into the argument to help the facts shine through. Mull however did not state any progress that has been made on the subject and I wanted to add some because even though sick leave sucks right now we still have to show the positives that are coming. Her argument was very impressive I just put my own twist on it!

It’s important to evaluate the source because having an uncrediable source leaves you having false information. And spreading that false information to your audience. The most important thing that I learned from the reading is that, that articles should provide citations. This knowledge changed how I read or think about an article because, I would know that the information is reliable because of its backed up information. It also helps looking for other sources that present similar information.

I totally agree Ashley! One of the first things I look for is if they have cited their own sources. Why do we have to do it and not them? They should be citing, and if they are not it is an easy indicator that the information is not reliable. It is important to not spread false information! incredible sources can sneak up on you if you are not careful, that's why you take a second to look if it is credible or not!

Evaluating a source can impact your whole paper. If you were not to and used an unreliable source the entire paper you had been working on would have all been for nothing! Making sure you know the author, when it was published, and making sure it is not fake news are all ways to help make sure the source you're using is legit. Having knowledge on this difference between a good and a bad source helps me skim over an article to see if it fits my criteria before I go into depth. Checking the Domain will always be my first thought when examining an article.

Thesis: Robotic nurses are extremely beneficial for our health care industries but there are some kinks that need to be worked out.

Evidence: This article is very well done because it goes as far into depth as possible with details and evidence without confusing the audience. One example of evidence that I found intriguing is how the AI facial recognition is notoriously bad at recognizing the facial features and emotions on people with darker skin tones.

Counter Argument: The use of robots in the medical field is too much of a risk considering the cost and the possibility of taking peoples jobs. This could end up doing serious damage to the medical industry including the people that work there and the people that are treated there.

I cannot believe we live in a time where robots are actually taking over haha! I decided to skim your article and agree that it went into great detail about the topic and with the evidence as well that did help me stay focused on the main idea and not get confused. I agree with your counterargument. There are already way to many people in America and if we take jobs away from the few people that are actually working then no one will be working! Thats also so weird about the robots no0t being able to pick up darker skin tones!

Amanda Mulls main argument was that pandemics, like covid, could be contained a lot better if America addressed an underlying issue within our place of work: the lack of paid sick leave.

Evidence in this article ranges from the peoples perspective to the CDC. I feel like there was some intriguing evidence about how many people use those few days they have for other things that are more important that their health. Mull lacked evidence on digger more into what else with the workplace could help this problem. Mull does a good job of trying to get evidence from everyones perspective and makes a compelling argument.

A counterargument you might say would be, How is the workplace the root of the cause of a pandemic like Covid-19?

I found the image in google for people who are struggling with wellness while at home. The purpose is for these people to get tips on working from home. And that these people can still do their regular schedule similarly as before. The image employs ethos and pathos. Ethos since the creators are well informed on the struggle of working from home. The graphic has white text against a red background to add an element of contrast. Each tip has the similar format and the same colors are continued to be used throughout the image. The alignment makes the image appear more clean and clear. The images and text are not bunch up together and makes it easy to read. This image does reflect my understanding since it sets a perfect example of how a infographic should look like.

I really like this info graph! It is not just a well rounded ad but it also is recent in what we are living in right now! I agree with you that the image does employ pathos and ethos. I like the alignment and agree that it makes clean and clear but I would add on by saying have it all perfectly in the middle help keeps your eyes on the big picture. I feel like it could have used more than just different shades of red to help it not feel as bland. I agree that it is a good example but everything can improve!

I found this photo on the World Health Organization page. This photo is encouraging everyone to stop spreading germs by washing your hands. A small and simple task that takes less than a couple minutes to do. They use soap bars to form a brain to basically state to be smart “use your brain” and wash your hands. This photo uses pathos because it draws the viewers in by making a brain out of soap. There is also a use of a hashtag in the upper right corner which many people use. This does use CRAP by repeating the use of soap having the main focus right in the middle and getting the point across with no question. This photo is simple yet very important in the health world.

The author didn’t provide any direct quotes but would reference other studies and medical articles. The writer provides context before referencing. She uses. a study found or in 2009 study etc. Yes, because it back up their claim on why humanities is successful for undergraduates. I feel though that the article could be more effective if there were quotes. With my paper I did provide a direct quote but also reference the article like the writer did.

I have a feeling after reading several of these Tumblr posts that, most of us used a somewhat similar writing strategy that our author in their article wrote. This might not be the case for everyone but for you it is and I did the same by using quotes to backup my statements. Unlike yours, my author used direct quotes from sources but using references of other studies is just as effective. I am not quite sure when your article was written but what also could have helped their article is if they used a source more recent unlike their 2009 source.

Amanda Mull introduces the quote by adding her thoughts on the subject which will introduce the quote. Mull basically says exactly what the quote says just in her own words. Having that quote say somewhat of the same thing makes her thought seems more true and trustworthy. She does not really integrate the quote as much as she uses it to back up her statement. I will be using this technique in my paper to show my thoughts and opinions are backed up by the article and other sources.

For my ap language and composition class, our teacher had us peer review but anonymously through a website. When I got back my assignment, people stated that they liked it but thought I was off topic. I decided to change it up and have my teacher review it, but he also said it was off topic. The most helpful was they were honest in their critiques but also didn’t elaborate on it. I would instead have it be face to face, so there would’t be any miscommunication.

Hey Ashley! I think it was a very good idea that your teacher used an anonumous website for peer editing so its not biased and you are getting honest criticism. I agree with you on not getting elaborate responses from your peers. I feel that we should all try to be more specific with our thoughts so that we don't have any “miscommunications” and understand how to fix the problem for clearly.

In the past peer-reviews have been somewhat helpful but I did not have the best luck on who my peer was. Most of my peers in the past just half assed their part in reviewing mine when I would review theirs like it was my own paper. I did get better grammar and a couple good sentence changes but that was about it. In the future with peer-reviewing I hope that my partner gives as much effort and only gives advice that is helpful. In other words, I know my first draft is shitty, you do not have to tell me.
