Dean is trapped in a cycle that he NEVER breaks. Never. He came to the edge in The Trap but they refused to let us see consequences of his actions after that. Sam has freed himself over and over again. That’s Sam’s story: walking away, putting it down, trying to run. He’s trying to find something in himself that is More than where he came from. This wouldn’t even occur to Dean. He’s 90% his own crap and he knows it! And I really care for Dean, I do. But it’s just so clear to me that he sits there and grinds his gears because he can’t go back and prove to his father and he can do it right. Guess what Dean! You could NEVER do it right. You can’t do it. And it’s not because of you, it’s because of your dad. It would never be good enough for him. Deep down Dean knows that, but it hurts too much to think about a man you devoted your entire life to (“with everything I had”) and he didn’t love you. He chose to hurt you. And that’s different for Sam because Sam was able to recognize that nothing he ever did would be good enough. Guilt vs shame! Dean thought he was doing it wrong. Sam knew he could never do it right in the way John wanted. Of course it caused them to clash because Dean cannot conceptualize Sam saying it doesn’t MATTER nothing’s EVER going to be good enough! Because Dean would say yeah of course it’s not if you don’t TRY! And I think later on Sam just feels pity for Dean, stuck in this cycle of thinking he lets everyone down. It’s not that Sam does the work and Dean doesn’t: it’s that Sam DID the work, when he left for Stanford, and Dean DIDN’T then because he wasn’t ready. And then John died and they were stuck in this emotionally stunted place. Sam hurt so badly and could not get Dean to understand. Dean was so terrified that his whole world was crashing down. It’s so sad to think of the core of the show as the wreckage John leaves behind. The core conflict is always Dean trying to do something right and Sam saying it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. There’s no right answer. I’m just trying to make something good out of it.

Some people say that Dean is the rebel because he makes fun of regular authority figures (cops, teachers, etc). But the thing is in Dean's world all those people are just civilians. Dean had a very hard time going against the actual authorities in his life (his father or older hunters) and he only did that because of Sam. By his own, Dean would have just follow the hunters code of killing everything supernatural.

Sam is the one who challenges every odd and keeps trying to be something else than what others are telling him to be. Sam won't give up even if he fails. He is not the good son, the boy king or the true vessel.

Sam literally has no idea who Dean is starting out in Season 1. I know we all say this all the time... but rewatching 1.03 Dead In The Water last night, it isn't just that Sam thinks that Dean doesn't like kids. It's also how in the same episode, when Dean decides not to take the out the sheriff gave them and turns around to check on Lucas and his mom, Sam is like, "Who are you and what have you done with my brother??"

And that combined with 1.02 "Saving People, Hunting Things, the Family Business" makes me think like. Oh. Sam really doesn't understand why Dean hunts at all. He has no idea that Dean actually cares about the victims and his primary directive is protecting people he doesn't even know because he loves them—because Dean loves everyone and wants to give them what he can't have. Dean is so conflated with John in Sam's mind that they're virtually the same person to him, and apparently in this situation, John would have taken the out and prioritized protecting their family from the law over making sure the hunt was finished.

This is literally Sam's first time ever hunting one-on-one with Dean and not Dean&John. So every time he's ever hunted with Dean, it was John's plan and John's principles and John's prime directive. Sam never understood that just because Dean followed orders, his own motivations were not the same as their fathers. He never understood Dean's actions as anything other than an extension of their father's feelings and will.

honestly i might go watch 12x04 again because it was the only good late seasons episode (other than the dream sequence in atomic monsters and the part in the bar when sam says "THERE WILL BE! NO! NEW king of HELL")
