My cowriter and I are working on a social media fic with an unusual framing... It's in-universe hosted on the lovechild of the Internet Archive and the Library of Congress, because internet history is worth preserving too. It's the modern form of a museum displaying old letters.
It's been so much fun figuring out CSS/HTML formatting to get everything working on Ao3, and I'm really excited to share the rest soon!I even went through all the effort of keeping it compatible with Reversi so that dark-mode lovers don't have to get flashbanged:
It's even slightly interactive, to feel like you're really scrolling through a government website trying to get what you need for a research project. I love research a lot... dunno if that actually appeals to anyone else.

Crowd sourcing, there was a fic I was trying to track down for someone.
It was a comedy oneshot, Wind was trying to convince the chain the world was round and Legend, who knew better but was being a little shit, was pushing flat Earth.
Can anyone point me to it?
I read this one recently! It's The Shape of the World by VEcuzimlazy
References for my Yiga!Link au fic, Sickle and Chain!
I'll probably update this post a few more times over the course of writing the fic, putting the spoiler-y stuff under the cut from here.
As an exercise of conveying characterisation more through body language and shape rather than clothes or colours, I drew some of the Yiga characters :)
Chapter 12 spoilers: (not very spoilery but still)
a doodle inspired by a comment on my ongoing fic
(+demonstration of how to embed an image on ao3 because I was asked)
do u ever get a comment on a fic thats just so sweet that ur like Maybe slaving over 24k of fanfiction was worth it for user SprinkleTrashcan2012 to leave a three paragraph comment
I am thinking about fan fiction writers, but anyone who writes any kind of fiction can answer. (As far as I’m aware, non-fiction is usually written in the past tense - but if I’m wrong do let me know!)
What tense do you write in?
Past
Present
Past or present (elaborate?)
Future?!
I’m bald/vanilla extract
If you like, explain why in the tags!
When I was young I gathered that all serious works of fiction were written in the past tense (past tense third person to be precise) so that is what i did when I started writing. However my mind was blown by the power and immediacy of Margaret Atwood writing in the present tense so I started to experiment with it myself, and now i strongly favour it. I get the impression that past is still the most commonly used, but I’m prepared to be surprised!
Please share!
things that always make me happy: serial commenters. there are three types
1) reading a longfic chapter by chapter, leaving an increasingly emotional comment on every chapter, descends into keysmashes near the end: outstanding
2) read one fic by accident, clicked the author name, now working steadily through the backlog and commenting on everything, I wake up to an AO3 inbox full of enthusiasm: precious beyond words
3) the longterm serial commenter whose comment begins with I don’t even know this fandom but because they have followed me from somewhere else: stunning. humbling. magical.
these are all *chef’s kiss* and I want to add one more: 4) left a comment a while ago, comes back and leaves another comment on the same fic, telling you that they’re coming back to reread the fic: angels. blessings. lifesavers.
OK but real quick here: how many times can I comment on the same fic before it gets creepy???
IT NEVER GETS CREEPY
If anything, the more you comment, the greater the heart exploding joy.
Sounds about right

A brief summary of how user engagement is tracked on Tumblr, for the newcomer:
When you like or reblog a post, that counts as user engagement for the person you liked or reblogged from, and shows up in their notifications.
If the person you liked or reblogged a post from wasn’t the original poster (i.e., you’re liking or reblogging a reblog), it also counts as user engagement for the original poster, and shows up in their notifications as well.
This means that user engagement from your likes and reblogs can potential accrue to two different people, the original poster and the person you liked or reblogged from.
Consequently, you cannot “steal” user engagement from someone by reblogging their post.
This is one of the very few areas where Tumblr actually functions more reasonably than other social media platforms.
Note that this is only true if you use Tumblr’s built-in reblogging function. If you save someone else’s content to your local device and append it to a new post, you effectively become the original poster from that point on.
This means that on Tumblr, “reblogging” and “reposting” are two different things; if you see someone complaining about “reposting”, this is not the same as reblogging.
Commenting when reblogging does not affect any of this – unlike, say, Twitter, where quote-retweeting causes user engagement to accrue to the quote-retweet and not to the original tweet – and you can and should do so freely.
However, every Tumblr user can see who exactly you reblogged a post from, which functions as a soft disincentive against making inane comments; if you make a dumb comment on a reblog, people who see your reblog may “back up” one step in the reblog chain to reblog a version of the post without your comment.
Nobody understands tags, and there’s a fair amount of evidence that how tags work changes periodically and without warning.
Tags are a divine mystery.
Who was the prison made for? a summary of the running theories.
(all characters are /rp) While it doesn’t really matter to the story, Dream’s mysterious motivation is an important part of his characterization.
The vault was initially described as intended for someone capable that he can’t kill.
No one in particular: It’s not unlikely that the prison was made just to be intimidating. Anyone that Dream decided was annoying could go in there for a week and be let out again. A system like this is ideal for the “big happy family” goal, as it discourages working against him with some immediate and unpleasant consequences.
Dream himself: This is true in a meta sense, since this is what cc!Dream was planning. I don’t think Dream is that much of a masochist though. He was very concerned about the security of the prison, which would be very inconvenient to himself. Dream is a decent planner, but he’s not Moriarty - what could he possibly think he’d get out of it? Why wouldn’t he want to enjoy his success?
Sam: A good bit of irony, but doesn’t make much sense beyond that. Sam is resourceful and could be a threat, but he didn’t have much in the way of an agenda at the time. Dream’s allies are a limited resource.
Tommy: The prison was commissioned about a week after Tommy burned down George’s house. You can say he only loosely fits the description of “capable” - despite being a skilled fighter, he always encourages people to underestimate him, preferring to stash his belongings and wear cheap armour.
Dream directly said to Tommy that the prison was not planned for him, but he had changed his mind. It is possible that Dream was lying to try and manipulate Tommy into believing his imprisonment would be due to his own mistakes, aiming to further destroy his morale. To make him think that if he just surrendered, Tommy would still have his freedom. This theory is in line with Sam’s accusations against Dream.
Technoblade: At the time the prison was commissioned, Dream and Techno were not allies. It possible that Dream was apprehensive about what Techno could do, but later realized that he and Techno have common goals and set that concern aside (for the time being). This narrative is also reasoning for Phil, who could be leverage against Techno, especially since Phil only has one canon life.
Skeppy: the Skeppy cage would only be able to contain him for so long.
Tubbo: Potential leverage against Tommy and New L’manberg. Dream doesn’t respect him all that much though, and probably wouldn’t have any issue with killing him.
Wilbur: While dead at the time the prison was commissioned, Dream did have the revival book in his possession. He may have been planning to revive Wilbur and hold him in the prison for negotiations.
Quackity: Not that likely, but definitely not impossible. Quackity does have a dangerous charisma and very little interest in Dream’s ideals. Also, irony.
Ranboo: Since Ranboo hadn’t done much at this point, this theory is dependent on whatever his backstory is.
Fundy: Dream clarified on the same day he commissioned the prison that they are not engaged in the SMP, which is convenient timing... and that’s about it.
Everyone else: The other server members haven’t done much to aggravate Dream, so it seems unlikely that he’d single any of these people out.
The Egg: If you could move the egg, the prison would be a good place to put it.
Drista: If you could contain her, that might be useful, but she can just punch through any block.
Someone not on the server: maybe Dream was living in fear of Michaelmcchill. What evidence do we have against this? well, I’m waiting.
i hope the ao3 user who left multi-paragraph chapter by chapter comments on my fic until they reached the second-to-last chapter, commented “god”, and disappeared for two hours is doing okay
reader LIKED the fic? reader left thoughtful comment because they thought there was something worth analyzing? oh! oh! love for reader! love for reader for one thousand years!
