goodbye uni, hello working life
after eight and a half long and hard years i finally graduated from my part time degree with a master's in physics at the tender age of thirty three
i originally started this blog as a way of getting through the degree. and it really helped! i have found a wonderful community of other students here :)
now it's time to figure out what to do for a living and i will keep this blog around to document this journey
15.05.26 - Study session at the deutsches museum library
Love it here because its green, and quiet + good parking opportunities and i absolutely adore the deutsches museum shop. Could leave a ton of money there.
I booked one of the few study desks with recharge opportunity and enjoy the slight wind coming in from the isar river which flows right by.
I’m so ready to graduate💀
i just have this persistent feeling of “i’m not doing enough” combined with “i don’t have the energy to do anything” and it just really fucking sucks
NASA just revealed a heaven-like planet where you can read outside with an iced coffee. And they’re calling it Earth.

worked on a few assignments and went in a walk. right now i’m on a side mission of finding out what is the best study spot in the city (my main mission being finishing my degree, of course)

These past few weeks have been a little crazy, to say the least. Recent accomplishments include giving a guest lecture and reviewing a paper. I survived my PhD yearly progress meeting, and even came out of it feeling generally better about prospects (and had fun ranting about bad note-taking habits of our collaboration with my advisor). I'm done with teaching for the semester, and I have this summer to plan for job applications this fall.
Accomplishments so far this week

Researched Milky Way lensing
Compared different images and object measurements
Lab group meeting
Figured out how to submit measurement algorithm on other computing system
Started another computing job only to have it fail in a spectacular, though informative, manner

I have to change my strategy for studying. I can't really do it all in one day anymore, like I did in the past. There is just too much material and it's more difficult too - I'll have to start getting more done during the week and stay consistent with it. More smaller segments. I think I can do it! :) + A friend who moved out of the country is back for a while and he's joining me in my math lecture tomorrow!

i disclosed my adhd to the team! i was so nervous i thought i might faint, but i did it :) we're now going to get some acoustic panelling in the office to help with the visual and acoustic noise of five people in a small room.
and i think i need to talk to my psychiatrist again about medication. i think i'm going to take a break from medication for a couple of weeks or a month because i want to figure out what my current baseline even is. but i'm also a bit scared of the chaos that might ensue as a result.
but right now i'm looking forward to the four day weekend!

today i did an acid-base titration for the first time in probably fifteen years! it was a lot of fun :) i roped another intern into it who's got more recent practice at it then me and he seemed to enjoy being able to teach someone else some things rather than always being taught.
tomorrow i'm going to disclose my adhd diagnosis with the group and i'm currently feeling a bit nervous about it. i've already disclosed it to my manager because i needed to shield my desk a bit more from stimuli because ever since this winter my meds have been a lot less effective at helping me filter out noise and movement and not get painfully distracted by them. he's reaction was absolutely fantastic. he also told me that i can also take a sick days if i need it and that my health comes first. and he also asked what else he and the team can do for me other than the accommodations i had requested.
last week i learned that my manager didn't manage to get funding for a more permanent position for me. that hurt a lot. i'm already sad about leaving. but after recovering from that gut punch i'm now determined to enjoy the rest of my time there. and who knows, maybe we'll work together again some day :)
Spent some time outside so I remember life is good.

Everything Is Awful and I’m Not Okay: questions to ask before giving up
Are you hydrated? If not, have a glass of water.
Have you eaten in the past three hours? If not, get some food — something with protein, not just simple carbs. Perhaps some nuts or hummus?
Have you showered in the past day? If not, take a shower right now.
If daytime: are you dressed? If not, put on clean clothes that aren’t pajamas. Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether it’s a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.
If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep? Put on pajamas, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes — no electronic screens allowed. If you’re still awake after that, you can get up again; no pressure.
Have you stretched your legs in the past day? If not, do so right now. If you don’t have the spoons for a run or trip to the gym, just walk around the block, then keep walking as long as you please. If the weather’s crap, drive to a big box store (e.g. Target) and go on a brisk walk through the aisles you normally skip.
Have you said something nice to someone in the past day? Do so, whether online or in person. Make it genuine; wait until you see something really wonderful about someone, and tell them about it.
Have you moved your body to music in the past day? If not, do so — jog for the length of an EDM song at your favorite BPM, or just dance around the room for the length of an upbeat song.
Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days? If not, do so. Don’t be afraid to ask for hugs from friends or friends’ pets. Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; you’re not imposing on them.
Do you feel ineffective? Pause right now and get something small completed, whether it’s responding to an e-mail, loading up the dishwasher, or packing your gym bag for your next trip. Good job!
Do you feel unattractive? Take a goddamn selfie. Your friends will remind you how great you look, and you’ll fight society’s restrictions on what beauty can look like.
Do you feel paralyzed by indecision? Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.
Have you seen a therapist in the past few days? If not, hang on until your next therapy visit and talk through things then.
Have you been over-exerting yourself lately — physically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually? That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether it’s physical rest, taking time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment.
Have you changed any of your medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand? That may be screwing with your head. Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesn’t settle down.
Have you waited a week? Sometimes our perception of life is skewed, and we can’t even tell that we’re not thinking clearly, and there’s no obvious external cause. It happens. Keep yourself going for a full week, whatever it takes, and see if you still feel the same way then.
You’ve made it this far, and you will make it through. You are stronger than you think.
