Hi! I’m jet-plane! Welcome to my blog!

I'm a fanfic writer and a nerd who loves Star Trek, The Magicians, The West Wing, Heated Rivalry, and Criminal Minds. My name on AO3 is jetplane (link), which is where I post most of my writing (you'll only find the occasional story here on Tumblr).

I think it would be funny to write a murder mystery where not only did every single character involved have an obvious motive to kill this mf, they were actually all attempting to murder him first, but the murder attempts all cancelled each other out all except for one. Two people tried to poison him but the poisons just happen to work as antidotes for each other, and instead of killing him only gave him the shits, and due to having the shits he couldn't go hunting that day like he had planned, foiling the plans of the one who had conditioned his favourite hunting horse to panic and bolt at the cue of a whistle, and the other murder attempt of tampering with his gun so that it would have exploded his whole face off.

The whole mystery isn't about who could have done it or how, but who was the one who got lucky and actually succeeded.

When I was in high school a friend of mine would host murder mystery dinners once or twice a year. They were the kind you could buy as a kit -- I don't even know if they exist anymore -- and everyone was assigned (or chose) a character, then received a booklet of clues to share. The idea was to spend an evening in a one-shot LARP designed like an Agatha Christie novel.

I was a year above most of them at school so they threw a "goodbye" murder mystery for me just before graduation, and about 2/3 of the way through the game we all realized that everyone had at least attempted to kill the victim. The game then shifted from "whodunnit" to "who succeeded in dunninit" which we all felt was not only super fun but above the usual level of narrative complexity for those games.

After we solved it, we discovered that the game wasn't from a kit -- the host had written it herself and meticulously printed out the booklets in replica style of the kits. It was the best going-away party I think I could possibly have had.

Writer: Okay so this seems like an appropriate size for this room, given its function and the drama needed for the scene...

Readers: Perfect! we were told 3 chapters back that this room is 'the average room size for a spaceship of this type', meaning that we can use this size information to back-calculate the volume of the spaceship, adjust for the stated 0.9atm air pressure... and then looking at the required air cycling rate for humans... we can see that the air purification system briefly described in chapter 6 when they were replacing air filters would be impossible for this spaceship!

Tumblr ask 6 months later: It was really clever how you used the size of the rooms and the air filter system to hint that the ceilings of all the rooms were very very low and thus let the audience deduce that humans in the future are much shorter than humans today! That's a great little nod to the 'humans have gotten taller over time' thing that people like to say, and really subtle, since people who hadn't done the math on the room volume would never see it!

Gen Z progressives will write entire essays about justice, oppression, bodily autonomy, and systemic violence, and then just… completely opt out of the conversation when it comes to animals.

Like, you can’t say you care about exploitation while you are enabling its atrocities and are actively participating in an industry built on it.

Animal agriculture isn’t some neutral background system. It runs on control over bodies, forced reproduction, separation of mothers and babies, systemic sexual assault and sodomy, gender-specific murder of babies due to economic inefficiency, and treating living beings as units of production. That’s not a fringe take - that’s literally how the system functions. Cows don’t just “give” milk. Chickens don’t naturally produce eggs at industrial levels. None of this exists without constant human intervention and manipulation.

And then people will turn around and talk about feminism, bodily autonomy, and consent, while funding industries that override those concepts entirely for billions of animals. You don’t get to selectively apply ethics only when it’s convenient or socially normalized.

And it’s not just about animals.

This system is tied directly to environmental collapse. Huge portions of deforestation - including massive chunks of the Amazon - are driven by land clearing for grazing and feed crops. Oceans and coral reefs are being gutted by industrial fishing. Entire ecosystems are collapsing.

It’s tied to human exploitation too. Slaughterhouse workers have some of the highest rates of PTSD and workplace injury out there. These are often underpaid, marginalized workers put into violent, high-speed environments and expected to just cope with it.

And globally? Wealthy countries outsource the damage. Land gets stripped, water gets polluted, and communities in poorer regions deal with the consequences so others can maintain consumption habits without thinking twice. Not because they need to. It's because they WANT to.

So yeah...when people say they’re anti-exploitation, anti-capitalist, pro-environment, pro-justice… but won’t even examine their role in this system, it comes off as inconsistent at best.

You don’t have to be perfect. No one is. But acting like this is some irrelevant side issue instead of one of the largest, most normalized forms of exploitation on the planet?

That’s where the hypocrisy starts to show.
