When a man calls you a bitch, he knows he can get away with it. He knows it’s a misogynistic slur—that’s why he’s using it and not a word like asshole or prick or jerk or any other word-, he knows it’s a silencing tactic, he knows you’ve been socialised to not call him out on it. That’s where the smugness comes in, because he knows exactly what he is doing. He knows he is subjecting you to misogyny and that if you fight back, he can say “it’s just a word!” And act like you’re crazy. He knows he has a free pass to use misogynistic language against you, because he knows society doesn’t take misogyny seriously enough to acknowledge.

And you know all of this, too. When he calls you a bitch, you know all of this is running through his subconscious. You know it by his smile when you get upset, his pride when you stay silent. You know that he knows what he’s doing, and it’s infuriating.

When Tate was big, teachers were hearing sexist screeds coming from middle schoolers. The kids today are brain-poisoned by the internet, which is algorithmicly geared toward fascism. But it sounds like these were disproportionately boys, which makes sense, and the thing about teenage boys is they're obsessed with status and belonging. If I were their teacher, I would shame them. They do this stuff because they think it makes them cool and edgy, so show everyone what losers they are. Laugh at their fascism. In class.

Point out how the Nazis got crushed, Hitler was a pathetic syphilitic drug addict whose whole politics come from being sad people didn't like his paintings. Remind them that they're just kids regurgitating talking points from the internet, which is a pathetic, childish thing to do. (Kids are always trying to feel older than they are, so if they think a behavior makes them look childish they'll avoid it like the plague.) Point out how Fascists are assholes, and everyone hates them. That they're losers with no friends, and most of them will grow out of it once they get an actual life. And remind them that this isn't a game, that if they hold onto those beliefs as adults, there are many people who will attack them for it, financially, socially, and physically. That they'll be alone and under attack all the time. Because no-one likes mass-murderers.

And laugh at them. To their faces. That's their greatest fear, and they think by saying shocking things they can put the teacher--an authority figure--on the back foot. If you don't act shocked or flustered, but instead pity them, their whole strategy is wrecked. Remind everyone that being a Nazi is for fucking losers. Elon Musk is a loser. Andrew Tate is a loser. Kanye West is a loser. Alex Jones is a loser. They're all fucking pathetic, desperate attention whores with no spines who are whining because their wives left them. The money is literally all they have, because they have no friends, no wives, no family, no life. Make them afraid of being a fascist.

One time we had this guy covering a shift at the coffee shop and it somehow came out over the course of regular small talk with us that he was Armenian. He got this really tired distant look in his eyes and said "yeah, you know what people always think about when they find out." Everyone nods and I figure we're all on the same page so it doesn't need to be said, and I'm about to move on when someone pipes up "the Kardashians!" He sighs and nods, and I, unable to help myself go "oh" and then very quietly "I thought we were talking about the Armenian genocide."

Everyone is stunned for a moment, except for the guy who suddenly lights up and says, in a remarkably delighted tone of voice: "that's the first time anyone has ever mentioned the Armenian genocide!"
