i also think like the reading of percy as a child of color also deepens his parallels and foil to luke. because luke is like radical in a terrible, callous horribly white way where he not only does not actually care about uplifting or helping any of his fellow demigods, but doesn’t care about how his actions affect mortals either (backbiter is a symbol of this). he just wants revenge at those who wronged him but he doesn’t care about whatever happens to anybody else, there is no empathy or compassion in his approach at “revolution,” it’s fueled entirely by hatred. and i think if you grew up black or brown and you related that to percy while you were reading you have an understanding of how percy repells that selfishness in the face of rage and disillusionment and cynicism.

It’s the fact that Luke arrives at CHB expecting the world to come to him on a platter. It doesn’t come, and he eventually realizes it won’t. Instead of realizing these systems are ones built against all the demigods, though, he blames—or at least carelessly misdirects his anger toward—the people most harmed by them.

It’s aggrieved entitlement—a selfish kind of anger, a belief that you’ve been denied something special you deserved more than other people. It reaches for vengeance, even if it knocks over a dozen people on the way.

And it’s contrasted with Percy, who never got that chance at blissful ignorance. He came into CHB and was thrown into the messiest parts of its world right from the start.

His anger stems from his love for the people hurt by that injustice, not bitterness about the things he felt entitled to but didn’t get; he wants to make the world easier for the people around him, not just to take revenge on the people who hurt him in the first place.
