I don’t get why they don’t come out. They’ve been together for so long and everyone knows they’re a couple. It would probably be easier for them to come out than constantly lie and try to hide things

I also get this question a lot and it’s so weird to me. Why does anyone choose not to come out? Because they’re happy retaining some privacy, because they can’t predict people’s responses and it’s scary, because they don’t want to forever be That Gay Couple On Youtube, because they might not be out to every single person in their family or personal life, because they’re afraid they’ll lose professional opportunities, because they don’t want to further the levels of audience intrusion, because they don’t want the pressure of a breakup countdown on their relationship, because they just… don’t want to.

I also think people overrate how freeing it is to come out. It’s not a one and done, that’s out of the way and you never think about it again sort of thing. You go from living with the stress of being closeted (which at least feels safe) to living with the stress of being out (which is terrifying as fuck since you can’t control how people respond to you and how they feel about you knowing this big divisive thing). There are reasons people stay closeted, and really fucking valid ones.

Here’s what I do as I am out. But for friends who are not out you be respectful to their wishes, fears and privacy. I have never felt it was ok to out someone who doesn’t want to be outed. We generally don’t know family interactions, business opportunities or career paths or even what physical harm one could bring those guys or women. Don’t insinuate, drop hints, play the double entendre game cause if they’re your friends they are placing a trust in you and that friendship. Just be nice and support them.
