Curiosity, why do you ship Jhin and Jax?
It was purely accidental I assure u, absolutely spontaneous, out of the blue. An epiphany at like 9pm at night while struggling to sleep bc my brother was screaming in the next room bc he had to go to bed. Practically speaking, itâs mostly is based around the fact at their core theyâre two compatible character types that have a possibility of meeting (old lore: both from Ionia, new lore: both travelers, both gravitating towards Piltover/Demacia because Everyone Is Gravitating Towards Fucking Demacia).
Whenever I write duos, romantic or no, I like to have some sort of contrast between the two characters but one similar, underlying motivation. Itâs an excellent way to come up with lots of possible content, because due to their differing personalities they respond to the same thing differently, but being motivated towards the same goal makes them able to work together despite their differences and develop their characters in an interesting way.Â
For Jax and Jhin specifically, theyâre both combat-oriented characters constantly wanting to find a challenge as to prove their might. However, how they approach combat is different. Jax is incredibly skillful in active combat (physically fighting the opponent; trading blows, avoiding/deflecting them, etc) and is famously quick, while Jhin is skillful in passive combat (outsmarting your opponent, limiting their resources, manipulating their movements, setting up traps/roadblocks/puzzles, etc) and is slow and methodical.
The idea is that they both ran into eachother and came to a draw: Jhin canât beat Jax because of his ability to literally deflect projectiles with nothing more than a wooden stick and sheer fucking will, and his skill in active combat making it so that it was impossible for Jhin to finish the encounter. Jax canât beat Jhin because Jhin outsmarts him, heâs too clever and elusive, with his passive combat skill making it so that Jax canât get to Jhin to initiate active combat, which allows him to finish the encounter.
In the case of a Saijax/Jhin (aka canon-based), this results in a constant battle between the two thatâs perpetually prolonged because neither can make any sort of progress, and it kinda turns into a âtwo rivals flirting with eachother/bickering like an old married couple while battling, until they get bored and call a temporary truce and go out for drinks and general hooligan mischief towards the unfortunate townspeople that are nearbyâ type thing. In the case of Obijiax/Jhin (aka canon-divergent), Jhin crafts an undercover identity to try and do his tricky passive combat bullshit, but ends up finding Jax to be a useful tool in terms of staying safe from ninjas, and so he keeps him around and eventually Jax asks him out and then they start dating and it turns into the spicy âone guy has a secret identity he doesn't want the other to find out about bc if they do heâs in for an ass kicking, and the other is an oblivious sweetheart and theyâre both hopeless romantics and they do arts and crafts on Tuesdays and Thursdaysâ.
