But out into the new world, cloaked in black, Jian accepted to take his father's place, exposing the darkness in men's hearts and parting greedy men their want of coin.

Possibly the worst Dark Knight ever seen - Any run of the mill dark knight may recognize the magical dark arts Jian uses when he’s involuntarily subjected to combat; and upon inquiring about his past just to find that his kill count is only one, the times he invoked Living Dead is many, and his simulacrum is often in the shape of a carbuncle, you question whether this man is the worst dark knight or the best. .

A peculiar aetheric source - For those with aethersense, you might notice something odd about his aether, like two essences orbiting around each other like a binary star, yet neither side is consuming one or the other.

The Smallest Ochus

A blade hums as it leaves its sheathe. Water ripples across his drenched boots as his verdant eye focuses on a lone small ochu, just barely reaching his hips. The bounty mentions that it has companions. And companions it has. Hidarime catches a pair slipping into the shallow waters from the shadows of a rock outcropping, slowly making their way to ambush from behind. His esteem never fails to watch his six.

He swiftly unsheathes his other blade as the ochus manages to have him surrounded, a situation he trained for in the past, but only with a longer, higher momentum weapon that could easily cleave his targets with a solid spin. The greatsword is his comfort weapon after all. However, the saberfangs will make do as his basic lessons in Tural taught him an interesting twist to his dual blades. With blades crossed he channels his aether, and one of the ochus leaps towards him, its maw aiming towards his head.

With a flash of violet, the creature is cleaved in half by a staff-like blade as Jian conjoins them at their hilt. Seedkin sap splatters across his face, and he feels adrenaline pumping as he dashes across the others in a spray of water. The ochus vines are fast, but the saberfangs demands his body to be faster. Soon, a mix of sap and blood pollutes the clear waters of their battle, and the last of the ochu slips off from his blade and splashes into the waters, still as a corpse. A cut across his forearm hastens his progress to cut away the leaves from the corpses. Uncertain if the antidote he carried is adequate for the poison, let alone have him be resistant to the possible paralysis, he quickly drank a vial before picking up the leaves and making his way back to Camp Bronze Lake. Hidarime may be able to watch his six, but the simulacrum will also simply watch him drop dead.

"You view the crystal as a burden then? Guilt is not uncommon. My mentor displayed a fair bit of it, especially when speaking of myself one day taking over in his stead." There was one question burning in the back of the nobleman's mind.

He didn't quite know how to phrase it. Several long beats passed as he mulled over the words. Everything sounded like a criticism in his head. Finally, he landed on something neutral. "You would really destroy it over the honor or your word ungiven? You won the deal. You owe him nothing now. He made his choices. Though, you're free to make yours if it brings you peace in the end."

Jian Kimura pulls out the dulled, wine-colored crystal tied to a small chain of the inside of his breast pocket, "When I was a kid, I once viewed it as my past father's heirloom, until I drank from the abyss and was hounded by its suffocating darkness, and I had to confront it. It became a lesser burden once I came to accept who I was, someone that's not merely an accountant, and that's when I realized that I don't really need the crystal to dictate my life. The mastery of the dark arts and all my power come from here now," Jian clenches his fist over the crystal, hovering it over his heart as he indicates the true source of his power.

The man held the door before me. Even if I said my thanks, what he said gave me great pause, and something to think about as I made my way back to the apartment. Limsa Lominsa is going through a great change of becoming a new leader in mercantile trade as Ala Mhigo lacked the necessary resources to break into the sea-faring industry, but not without much growing pains. Administrative work is rife with loopholes and corner cutting for the sake of getting things done fast, leaving behind a chaos of paperwork that I, as a public accountant for over a decade, have to attend to clean up and offer what meager advice I can give. My travels to Ishgard, Ala Mhigo, Thavnair, and even Tural and Everkeep, had not prepared me for the upstream battle I must contend with, seeing the responsibility of financial governance being passed around haphazardly until it finally fell on my lap. Even then, I was grateful for a fellow Limsan colleague to hold the door on my way out. My mind was eager to temporarily leave behind the life of balancing city finances, making sure incoming levies and fees from our imports is sustainable, and yet scalable, and enter a calm life walking barefoot on the beach, looking up at the night sky to see constellations guiding me through time. Curious, I asked, “What do you mean by that?” “Well, we’re living in interesting times, Mr. Kimura. You had done so much to take care of what we cannot do, nor unable to find time to do. What we can do is to protect others like you, as well as those working at Mealvaan’s Gate.” The pistol at the man’s hip glinted in the dim candle light. I felt a smile rising to my lip as my self-esteem grew twice as big, but I must keep it under control lest I demand something outrageous like an endless supply of Bacchus wine and a weekly spa day on the city’s dime. The locals will most be displeased if I caved and indulged to such moment of weakness. “Do not feed my ego, ser. I am simply doing my duty to the state and the Crimson Fleet. However, I appreciate the comment.” I bowed to the guardsman, before turning my heel to leave. “Have a good evening, and stay safe.”

“Well, well, well. Is that the Mongrel I see participating in Winter’s Knell? Wearing his mother’s garb?” Jian paused briefly as he poured drinks for the patrons of the celebration, dressed in a ceremonial cyclas. The tiny crow perched on his shoulders glanced at the man in Resistance uniform. The pouring continues. “I’m a small lad, Dalvag. And I see you have survived the occupation.” “Fought through it to the very end, I did.” Dalvag’s eyes furrowed at the new volunteer. “Meanwhile, you yourself fled and never came back until the liberation. Never once wanted to throw a single fist when we' re young lads training at the Emprise. The senior monks back then deemed you a lost cause while you continuously ate dirt. So why are you wearing it?" “People can change, and I had a change of heart recently.” Jian sets the pitcher down onto the table, “If you’re curious, I can demonstrate during the Coming of the Winter’s Blessing.” “...you know, it’s been a while since I had a proper fist-fight in the name of Rhalgr. I’ll see you there.”

Repercussions at Death’s Edge

“Dad, your hand is shaking.” Jian looked down at his gloved hand holding his tea cup. Despite his best efforts to steady himself, the quivering did not escape his son’s sharp eyes. “Did you invoke Living Dead again?” “Let’s not talk about it, Gerald. How is your business with your bakery?” He covered his hand with his other to stop the trembling and took a sip of the piping hot tea. “Oh, I’m doing quite fine in Kugane, but you should stop using that spell as your crutch.” Gerald redirects the conversation, much to Jian’s dismay. Always so confrontational towards people he cares for with such brutal honesty, his father never was sure if it was a strength or a weakness. “I’m fine.” “Are you really okay, dad? You smell of blood and death, the whiskey bottle is empty, your carbuncle is guarding your door, and your sword is recently honed and is laying in your bed. Have you been sleeping with it?” Gerald crossed his arms. “...” Jian stared at his son for a moment; their eyes met for a moment in a long, awkward silence. “Yes, I am okay. Just had a problem that I failed to resolve.” His green limbal rings flashed as Gerald rolled his eyes, “Failed to resolve…bullshit. You could have asked for help. I’m right here, dad. I’ve been training with the Kimuras for the past six months, so I can recognize the repercussions of the dark arts when I see it. Please, let me help you, or at least, talk to me.” “I don’t think you would-” “Your grandfather- my great-grandfather- gave me the talk. And he said that he also gave you the talk. So, you need to talk or you’ll become less of a dark knight, and more of a dead knight,” the au ra sighs, rubbing his long, black horn, “And a dead father. You are my flame as I am to you, dad. I’ve still yet to find the answer to what would happen if I lost you so soon.” Jian winced, knowing the lecture his son spoke off. Sighing, he nodded, motioning him to sit comfortably while he took a long drink of his breakfast tea. He recalled his adventures, starting with his journey to be a guest lecturer at Old Sharlayan, which led to caring a demi-primal of a man with a mind of a child. About dealing with a gifted alchemist creating powerful simulacrums without dynamis, and paying for his miscalculations in anonymity with his family secrets. About facing gods and goddesses that he had no business in participating in as he showed his son a white mark on his forearm as they blessed him for his fortitude, despite his stark opposition to fight them. About fighting a superior wielder of the dark arts enhanced by Nymean arcanima like himself, and forced to invoke Living Dead out of desperation before collapsing from his wounds, and waking up to find himself unharmed, despite sitting in a pool of his own blood. He admitted that he hated the hand fate dealt him; after all, at the end of the day, he would rather decline it all and return to bean counting rather than constantly exposing himself at death’s edge.

All Gerald could react was, “Well. Damn.”

Starting a new life in Vylbrand was one filled with trials and tribulations. Despite his quick learning in picking up the common language, the accents and inflections had given Jian some struggle. Sometimes being small in a city state full of giants put him with some severe disadvantages.
