Watchmen and V for Vendetta producer tells the original ending for Alan Moore's comic book adaptation
Watchmen producer Joel Silver has revealed the ending to the original script by writer Sam Hamm’s when he attempted to adapt Alan Moore’s blockbuster comic book for the big screen. According to Silver: “What he did was he told the story as-is, but instead of the whole notion of the intergalactic thing which was too hard and too silly, what he did was he maintained that the existence of Doctor Manhattan had changed the whole balance of the world economy, the world political structure.” Hamm believed that by having Ozymandias convince Doctor Manhattan to go back in time and prevent himself from being created he could drastically alter the ending of the film. As a result of Doctor Manhattan’s actions, Hamm would have created an alternate universe where the three main characters would have ceased to exist as real world super heroes. The veteran producer explains: “So the three characters, I think it was Rorschach and Nite Owl and Silk Spectre, they're all of the sudden in Times Square and there's a kid reading a comic book. They become like the people in Times Square dressing up like characters as opposed to really BEING those characters. There's a kid reading the comic book and he's like, Hey, you're just like in my comic book.” Silver felt Hamm’s ending was simply smart, articulate and offered a satisfying resolution. But, the V for Vendetta producer does admit that he enjoyed Snyder’s version of events as well, despite believing that Hamm’s script would have made for “a much, much better movie.” Do you agree with Silver, or do you think Watchmen should have stayed as a comic book? Let us know in the comments below.

Xbox Live to Continue Games With Gold Indefinitely, But Still Only on 360.
Microsoft has today announced that it will be extending its Games with Gold service indefinitely on the Xbox 360, but should we care? I've always been told you should never look a gift horse in the mouth but the Games with Gold service seems to be seriously lacking in value for money.
PlayStation has used the idea of an instant game collection to entice gamers to PS Plus over the past generation, despite the reported lack of support for the network. But, Sony’s announcement that they intend to start charging for their online service in order to improve the support sent Microsoft scrambling for ways to make the Xbox Live service better value for money. The resulting idea was Games with Gold.
On the surface it might seem like Microsoft are offering a good deal, but a quick comparison of Microsoft’s and Sony’s services will highlight how frustratingly useless to Games with Gold service is, especially for a self-confessed gamer like myself.
As an Xbox gamer, this could be a simple case of grass is always greener, but with this month’s titles being Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes and Halo 3, an arcade title that slipped under my radar and an ‘older’ blockbuster title, that most gamers will already own, it seems Microsoft are really hedging their bets with which titles they choose to offer. Sony on the other hand, offers much more recent (full list of games here) titles like Sleeping Dogs, Soul Calibur and Spec Ops: The Line, among at least 100 others.
There also still remain some stark differences in the way that the services offered. For example, Microsoft will allow you to ‘own’ the title, provided that you instigate the download in the allotted time. This will then give you access to the game online or offline on your 360. Sony, on the other hand, lets you rent the titles, allowing you access to them provided you remain a subscriber to the PSN. Sony will also let you access the titles across many different platforms including Vita, PS3 and the service has also been confirmed for PS4, something Microsoft have still to announce for their Xbox One.
It seems both services are an attempt by Microsoft and Sony to enlist more gamers to their online services. Microsoft is seemingly focusing on a casual crowd and Sony offering a larger and more diverse range of titles for more hard-core gamers. You could argue that Sony’s method remains restrictive, tying you into your subscription to play the games. But with Microsoft offering you relics from its past that many gamers will already own, I know I would rather start giving my money to Sony.
Do you think Microsoft’s Games with Gold service is good value for money?

Superman Celebrates 75 Years With A Short Animated Film.
To celebrate 75 years of Superman, DC Comics have created a short animated video, created by Man of Steel director Zack Snyder and Bruce Timm, DC Universes animation boss that follows Superman’s impressive career and chronicles his impact on today’s society.
The short two-minute collaboration piece celebrates all things Superman from his camp cartoon-ish beginnings through to his modern day counterpart who concerns himself with the more gritty storylines of The Man of Steel.
The idea was conceived by Zack Snyder who originally wanted to create a short film with a moving point of view and no cuts, “There are a few cuts in there, but for the most part we stuck to that. It’s pretty seamless,” said DC Comics animated Universe boss Bruce Timm. “Zack wanted to get the way Superman impacted the world and pop culture, even outside of comics… People are going to be arguing about it. ‘Why is that in there, but this isn’t? There was just too much stuff, so we tried to put in little nods, even if only in the background.”
The animation references Superman in all his forms from video games and film through to his origins in the pages of comic books, and sets it all to John Williams’s famous score from the 1978 movie, before merging into Hans Zimmer’s score from The Man of Steel.
Starting with his first appearance in Action Comics #1 the video features glimpses of the 1978 Atari 2600 game, Christopher Reeve, The Justice League of America’s first appearance, as well as the famous Death of Superman, to name but a few famous examples.
Die hard fans might also be able to recognise some of the less well know references, such as the robots from the 1941 Fleicher Brothers film The Mechanical Monsters.
The short can be caught on EW.com or you can catch is an included extra on the Man of Steel Blu-ray, due for release on November 12th.
What is your favourite Superman moment?

Google's First Smartwatch Leaked
Last month Google bought smartwatch manufacturer Wimm sparking rumours that Google could be set to announce it’s own smartwatch, and recent reports suggest that this rumour could actually be true.
Sporting the code name Gem and known among speculators as the Nexus watch, it is believed that Google’s smartwatch will run on Google Now, a platform that will allow Google to offer large amounts of information clearly displayed on a small screen. It is also believed to support Bluetooth 4.0, a connection that is capable of supporting low power connections, allowing Google to solve the issue of meagre battery life that plagues current smartwaches.
A lot of speculation still shrouds the announcement, but industry experts remain confident about the existence of a Google Nexus Watch. If the Google Gem is indeed in production, we can expect an announcement around the end of this month accompanying he Android Kitkat announcement.
With Samsung releasing the Galaxy Gear and the rumours of a Google Nexus watch, eyes will be on Apple to see if they will throw there hat into the smartwatch ring.
Smartwaches already have an establishing market with some big names in it, and consumers have already shown support by voting with their wallets using crowd funding website Kickstarter to finance The Pebble, a third party smartwatch that can link with your iPhone. What remains to be seen is if Apple will market a watch of their own.
With an uninspired launch for the Samsung Galaxy Gear and third party companies offering the only real competition, now would be an ideal time for Google or Apple to snatch up a controlling share of this emerging, and potentially very lucrative market.
We now know of an Apple invitational on October 22nd, which comes with a promise that “We still have a lot to cover”. The general belief is that Apple will announce a new model for both the iPad and the iPad mini, as well as some new iMac’s, however, with the Google turning the heat up in the race to be the dominant name for smart watches, perhaps Apple will be forced to show its hands with the inevitable iWatch.
Would you use a smartwatch, or do you think it will just be a waste of money?
