Edwin Antonio Valero Vivas, nicknamed El Inca Valero, was born on the 3rd of December, 1981, in El Vigía, Mérida, Venezuela to Eloiza Vivaz and Antonio Valero. He competed as a professional boxer from 2002 to 2010 in the Southpaw stance, and was an undefeated world champion in two weight classes. To this day, he remains the only WBC champion to win every fight of his career via knockout.
Despite promising career success, Valero’s life outside of the ring was chaotic and troubling. In September, 2009, he was arrested on assault charges after a man alleged that Valero had attacked his mother and sister. Furthermore, Valero was again accused of assault in March, 2010, by his wife, Jennifer Carolina Viera de Valero. While she later retracted her statement, claiming her injuries were the result of an accident on a staircase. Despite this, Valero’s behavior caused him to be sent for six months of psychiatric rehabilitation.
His behavior would unfortunately later only escalate, and in April of 2010, he would be arrested for the murder of his wife, who was found dead in a Valencia hotel room, where she had been stabbed three times. Allegedly, Valero admitted to both hotel security and the police that he had been the one to kill Jennifer. The day after being taking to jail, Valero was found hanging in his cell by his own pants. His death was officially ruled a suicide. He is survived by two children.
