I’m not the best at explaining things, but I will try my best!
I do not use photoshop to make my icons (as I can’t afford it), I use photopea. Photopea works with psd files, as well as a few other files and it’s free and you don’t need an account to make your icons.
I also mainly use psds made by my friend, @tattooedtaemin as her’s are made for poc and won’t whitewash them.
To start, I find an image I want to make into an icon. We’ll use a photo from Jongin’s instagram as an example. I put it into photopea as well as the psd I want to use and then I can either open it from my computer (as shown below), drag it from my downloads folder onto the “tabs” area, or just copy paste (only for photos and gifs) what I want into photopea.

I crop the photo to my liking by making sure it’s set to “fixed ratio”
And then once it’s too my desire, I go to the tab with the psd and then drag it to the tab with the image and if you wish to adjust the layers to your liking, you can do that!
Tip: if you drag a psd to the image and the display image only goes on top of the icon, undo and make sure you have the folder clicked so it puts it in that tab and not the display image (example shown in the gif below)
Once you’re done, save the icon! When saving icons, use .jpg and when saving gifs, use .gif.
Another tip, when doing this with gifs, make sure the psd folder is ON TOP of the gif folder or else it’ll only show up on certain frames!
