a genre of parent: german-dutch-austrian-esque parents who have their first child at 35-40 and raise them on patience, good manners, free spirits, and healthy foods. i see them on the tube in london when they're, i'm assuming, on holiday. they're all wearing practical clothes; waterproof jackets, fleeces, comfortable shoes. not in any sense of the word stylish, but it works for them and the climate. the parents have a utilitarian backpack full on what they need, not what they want. the kids have their own backpacks - good way to teach independence and self-reliance.

when i was 17 i 'worked' (lightly staj yaptim, family friend-owned) at a small cafe that my mum worked in. it was a quiet afternoon for a saturday, and the only customers we had were a mum and her little daughter. they spoke german to each other and the mum had a huge backpack on her. they ordered a berry smoothie which the kid loved, so the mum came up to us behind the counter and said that her daughter loved the smoothie so much, that they'd never tried anything like it, and - still beaming - she asked for another one. it was just her and her daughter there and they loved the berry smoothie and wanted another so they got another.

Saw the trailer for practical magic 2 and although I love that film and the concept of a sequel I don’t want it to be bastardised by the terrible cinematography of this decade past. What happened to light? What happened to colour? Also saw the trailer as I was sat down to watch devil wears prada 2; pitiful imagery compared to the original.
