WEEK 2:

ANTONOV - KOF XIV

Antonov is one of my favorite characters. He seems out of place in the KOF universe, which is why I think he represents the 2.5 reboot perfectly. In the lore, he literally reboots the tournament by buying the rights to it and declaring himself the King of Fighters. He even adds a new championship belt that he wears while he fights. Not only does the belt stay on during combat, but so do the pants, the shoes, the watch, and he even smokes a cigar during matches. But a shirt? Absolutely not. He’s got a soft spot for little tiny animals, and he cries readily at heartwarming movies featuring little tiny animals. When some KOF shit starts going down, he willingly sacrifices himself to save a young fan. He’s proof that you can still be a boss without being a villain. He goes to the top of the list for now. Who will be able to topple the king of fighters?

OSTuesday - Guilty Gear Xrd - Dirty Drive (I-No’s Theme)

I wanted to stick with the theme of fighting games with spooky themed characters that play guitar. This is the only game from the series I’ve played, and I-No is the only character I’ve played because she is the spooky themed character that plays guitar. The choice is obvious. Also, this song is really good. It’s a good fit for a spooky themed character that plays guitar.

WEEK 1:

‘94 ANDY BOGARD

Even though it’s incredibly early in the KOF franchise, they are quickly establishing Andy as a huge nerd. He’s so fixated on training. He’s like the kids who still do taekwondo in high school long after it stops being cool. He doesn’t even seem like a cool anime kid, just a martial arts nerd. There’s a big difference. However, he does get bonus points for dropping a mild swear in a 90s video game. This was the coolest thing you could do back then. As far as I can tell, there isn’t much mention to his relationship with Mai in this game, so that did not factor into my score. He does have great stage music in this game. All members of the ‘94 Fatal Fury teams already get a huge bump thanks to that track. Because this is the first ranking in the series, he’s at the top by default, but he is also last for the exact same reason. Sorry, ‘94 Andy. I wish you the best of luck as the rankings continue. Hopefully, your future incarnations are much worse than you.

OSTuesday - Darkstalkers 3 - Rikuo and Sasquatch theme

I recently listened to all the Darkstalkers OSTs, and I was disappointed that the characters had to share themes in the 3rd game. Shape of Water and Yeti had my favorite themes from 1 and 2, so I’m posting their combined theme from 3 to honor and respect their legacy.

Just finished CYBERPUNK 2077

It’s the perfect cyberpunk experience. Yes, an evil game corpo screwed over a lot of people, BUT they do offer a great escape from reality for those privileged enough to enjoy it. It’s has everything you would expect from a Western RPG, just dialed up to 11. I try not to think about it’s attempts to do pop philosophy because I think their message is pretty weak. That’s more of a personal thing though. It’s solid writing for a game, but that’s not why we game. We game because we want to customize our dick and balls and drive around and shoot and drink and blow shit up and feel like we have some control over our fate in a dystopian capitalist hellscape! That’s the future I believe in. It brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it....

Oh, and Keanu. We all love Keanu.
