Ok, last Halloween costume post. For now.
Peach is taller than Mario, so my partner and I switched the conventional roles. I found my overalls and his pink dress after a lot of thrift store hunting. His crown is cut from foam, as well as the overall buttons and the M logo on my hat. The mustache was tricky to adhere, so I put stiffened felt on a light metal rod and held it up throughout the night.
Another Halloween costume set I made. This one was a little too abstract for anyone to guess it but it was still fun. “Pink-E” and The Brain, in case you’re wondering.
I love making costumes. Maybe it’s the dorky craftiness, but I definitely look forward to Halloween. I made these logos for “Toothpaste and Orange Juice: The Worst Couple’s Costume Ever”. I freehanded cutting out Tropicana and Crest’s logos out of felt and safety pinned them on color appropriate outfits.
One my vetoed sign ideas for the science march last weekend. While walking to the march, I had another idea for one that has DMX and says, "Science gon' give it to ya" but #ohwellohwellohwell #marchforsciencepdx #sciencemarchpdx #simpsons #pig #illustration
Found this magical Paper Puffin postcard and added my own watercolor flair. It was sent off to my sister because she loves kitties. Because I’m a worrywart, I put a thin layer of acrylic medium just in case Portland decided to rain on it.
Sketched this while vacationing in northern Michigan. My best friend’s parents have a cottage on Lake Huron and it’s one of the most peaceful places on earth to recharge. They’ve done some construction on it since the last time I was there and I hope to visit again soon.
Last summer, I created the seating chart for a client’s wedding ceremony. The request was for the chart to be painted on glass so that the topiary could act as a textural backdrop. To keep the names in line and evenly spaced, I used grid paper from the backside of some old wrapping paper. For the calligraphy I drew with a white Sharpie paint pen which was perfect for durability. Once dried, it didn’t scrape or smudge off. It is pretty tough to photograph but ultimately a beautiful piece.
Throwback to the first pong table I created. After brainstorming, I chose a geometric design. I blocked out the shapes with masking tape, put down a white base coat, and let it dry. Since it was outdoors, I found a bird had pooped on it while a color coat dried. Birds are always messing with me. Anyway, it started raining so I MacGeyvered a safe spot with some plastic shopping bags to let it dry. The project was a success as I only used materials I already had on hand (besides the particle board).
Process post: How I made a snapchat geofilter
My office wanted a geofilter for the College of Engineering’s graduation ceremony. We decided on a chest bump for a memorable image and I started by mocking up different poses. My coworker Cara acted as a guinea pig for the placement, which was important as we didn’t want the illustration to command too much of the frame. Once we had that figured out, I sketched out the words until I found an arrangement I liked. I digitized my drawings and we submitted them to Snapchat. All in all, it felt like a fun, collaborative puzzle to solve.

Drew this for my last job’s weekly comic roundup and it never got used. But I like it anyway. Kind of looks like he belongs in the Scooby Doo universe.
Wheat embroidery! Which my grandma made. Not me. She asked me to sketch some wheat on some cloth and she embroidered it. I get pretty geeked at seeing someone out of my drawings and I love this.
Sketched this guy for a 30th Anniversary card. It just so happens that the recipient couple were married the same year as the first Wrestlemania, so this seemed fitting.
