to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!

i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

This much is clear. CBS is being “murdered,” as Scott Pelley calls what’s happening, not because of economics but because of politics. Economically, “60 Minutes” is a gold mine. Politically, Trump thinks it’s dangerous as hell because it tells the truth about him and his regime, and wants it killed. It’s important to see all this as a systematic effort by Trump to silence the truth about what he’s doing to America. Trump’s increasingly corruption — rife with crony capitalism, corporate welfare, and payoffs to the powerful — is producing an increasingly corrupt economy in which everything depends on bribes and personal deals made by the biggest Republican loyalists and grifters, oligarchs and plutocrats, billionaires and multibillionaires, and monopolists. When political and economic deal-making become personal transactions — when greed and payoffs replace trust — what happens? Authoritarianism replaces democracy. And an economy collapses, as it did at the end of America’s first Gilded Age, in the Great Crash of 1929, leading to the Great Depression. One day we will look back on the murder of “60 Minutes” as one of the travesties of Trump’s despicable reign. In the meantime, thank you Scott Pelley for telling the truth. Important note from a (future) nurse: if you are chronically ill, on a lot of medications, even managing conditions on your own, buy a drug guide. Davis's Drug Guide is what they had us buy for nursing school, and I've looked up every single medication I take in it. It helps you understand what the drug is doing to you, helps you understand side effects, reasons why you shouldn't take a medication, things to monitor for while you're taking a medication. It's not perfect by any means, but the thing I've found is that it's helped me guide conversations with providers, nurses, pharmacists, it's helped me figure out what questions to ask. When I've heard people talk about what they didnt know about their meds, what they wish they knew about their meds, it's often in a drug guide.

Out of everything I've learned in nursing school, it is the biggest thing I'd advocate for having in any home, period.

From a former nurse, now librarian: these drug manuals update annually. If you want one for your home it does not mean you need to update it annually, especially if you are on a medication that's been around for a good long while and has had through testing. But if you are on a new medication consider updating it every few years as new contraindications and side effects pop up with time and with access to a larger population base.

If you can't get Davis's, Lippencott is another title to search for. Make sure you get the pocket guide for nurses as it will contain all the information you need. They range $35-40 and you can find them on Amazon.

Additionally, if you are a student going to College or University and your school has a medical or nursing program, you probably have access to updated editions of these as searchable ebooks. Along with paper copies on the shelves.

If you're not a post-secondary student but you live in a city with a College or University, likely there is a community agreement. Where you can go and view or use resources on campus.

I have always found these drug guides to be more informative and readable then any of the drug manufacturers point 4 font size information slips they put in with medications.

one of the hardest things to learn as a depressed former Gifted Kid™ is that half-assed is better than nothing. take the 50%, 40%, even 20% job. scrubbing your face is better than not taking a shower at all. picking up your clothes is better than never cleaning. nibbling on some bread is better than starving.

DO THINGS HALFWAY. NOW YOU’RE 100% BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE BEFORE.

One of my college professors used to say “anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.”  I didn’t understand that for years because I didn’t do anything poorly, I couldn’t do anything poorly, I had to Do Everything Perfectly.

But brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all when that 2 minutes seems exhausting.  Doing ten minutes of yoga is better than 10 minutes of sitting when 30 minutes of cardio sounds impossible.  Changing my clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible.  Standing on the porch for a few minutes is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because I don’t have the energy to go anywhere.

Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly… because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.
