hi! how do you determine where to put thick and where to put thin lines in your drawings? id really like to know :3
here's some pointers I made hope this helps!
I forgot I have to be active here so here’s my Twitter tutorial on how to draw folds I made a while back to help a friend!

How I Study Anatomy
Everyone says NEVER TRACE!! THAT'S ART THEFT! Ok but we can do a little crime in the name of Learning.
Trace to learn, not to earn.
I like to take my own photos, but you can study whatever you want. Link back to original photos, and don't post copied artwork unless the artist is dead, cool with it, or both.
As always with learning, start every sketch with the intent to throw it away (trash for paper, quitting without saving for digital) This takes the pressure off and lets you make Bad Art, which is very important.
So let's make Bad Art of a Deer because I happen to have one handy
Start with a photo of your subject in a nice/neutral pose with all four feet visible. (so not like me)
Freehand copy it. Try not to stylize, focusing instead of matching proportions and pose. Don't get too detailed!
It's ok if your art looks terrible and has broken legs. I've drawn LOTS of deer so I have a leg up. Everyone's art sucks in their own eyes and here's where mine went wrong:
Either lasso-distort (recommended for beginners) or redraw a copy of your first sketch with your reference behind it (scaled to match the main body of your sketch)
Put the original and modified sketches together and compare the differences. Write it down if you want. This shows you where your eyes saw things the wrong size, so you can correct for that next time.
After learning about both deer and yourself, try freehand copying again.
Marvel at your newfound knowledge and skill!
but there's always room for improvement
You can stop here and move on to your real drawing, Or do another freehand-fix-compare cycle. I actually overcorrected my "draws heads too big" and veered into "heads too small."
Another note on tracing: Learning HOW to trace is more important than anything you could learn By tracing. Draw the Anatomy, not the outline. In real life, things don't have outlines, they have bones.
These are from the same shoot which is extra useful for consistency. The lines are minimal and follow where the animals joints are, and only important parts are drawn.
You won't know what Important Parts means right off the bat, which is where in-depth study comes in. You need to do learn the hard parts to do the easy parts right.
Next up: how to study bones and muscles.
Basic principles of cloth texture from observation.
Typed up my notes in case they might prove useful to someone
this is making me CRY

Please share this!!!!! As you resident vitiligan and fellow artist I am here to educate people on how to properly create a character with vitiligo and other things to keep in mind about the disorder.
Only 1% of the entire world’s population has vitiligo but I see so many artists making characters with it when they sometimes don’t even know what vitiligo is and pass it off as “skin pigmentation”. Like— what does that even mean??? XD
It’s not an aesthetic and it won’t get you “diversity points” so stop romanticizing vitiligo!
Honestly very happy to see this, especially the part that emphasises that skin tone has nothing to do with the likeliness of developing vitiligo. You can be as white as snow and have it.
for all of you who struggle to draw horse feet. :) You’ve gotta have those pasterns in there, as they are the horse’s main shock absorbers, as seen in the “bearing weight” example.
If you can handle an animal autopsy, here’s an interesting vid on how the muscles and joints work in the lower leg of the horse.
I got a lot of asks about this so I made a tutorial on how I was able to emulate the 80s aesthetic, please keep in mind I’m not an expert and what I put here is just what I personally did. I hope you guys like it and hope it helps

Just wanted to add more info about Jewish headcoverings!
Jewish scarf headcoverings are called "tichel(s)" (the "ch" is pronounced like "Chanukah", or like a hard h). Jewish women who cover their hair may also do so with a sheitel, which is basically a wig.
Not all Jewish women cover their hair, but Ashkenazi Orthodox generally do and some Conservative/Reform/non-Ashkes may also choose to. I've also heard of women only covering their hair when doing holy things, like going to temple or cooking.
It’s even more complicated than that in Judaism! because of course it is.
It is mostly the case in Jewish tradition that only married women cover their hair, with widely varying opinions as to whether a divorced or widowed woman uncovers her hair again. In general, unmarried Jewish girls and women will only cover their hair if they live in (or come from) a country where covered hair is considered default modest garb for all women regardless of marital status.
In most traditions the hair covering need not be a particular style, but can be anything at all: a scarf, a wig, a hat, a snood, a swim cap, anything so long as it covers the hair. Which leads to:
There is considerable variety in practice on how much hair must be covered. Some traditions call for no hair at all to be visible, others permit a certain width of hair to show either in front of or beneath the head covering, and still others call for only a token covering that need not actually render the hair invisible.
And yes, as @realashergray says, there is variety in when one covers one’s hair as well! Some very strict variations consider it proper to cover one’s hair at all times except when bathing or sleeping; some cover only outside of the house, or at home if there are non-family-members present; some only when attending synagogue/temple, or when saying blessings at home. (I’ve never heard of covering one’s hair to cook -- I wonder if this is specifically when baking challah, which does involve a blessing?)
tl;dr the style pictured above for “Orthodox Jewish” is not at all inaccurate but not at all universal.
Some pictures of a couple different styles of tichel
I have something to add about dupatta, which is not just worn by Muslim women in India but also by Sikh women in India (and Sikh women elsewhere of Indian descent).
