Spock: I believe that you will find that the arachnid in question was neither “itsy”… [raises brow] nor “bitsy.”
Imagine being lost on the Enterprise all alone and it’s just miles and miles of corridors like this
Oh, let me tell you a story…
I was a production assistant on “Deep Space Nine”.
One day I was in a hurry, and decided to shave a half minute off my journey but zipping through a soundstage and out the other side. It was Stage Four, and held Ops, some personal quarters, Sisko’s quarters, the Cargo Bay.. and hallways.
It was lit, because we were moving there later in the afternoon. I began jogging through the corridor and stopped right in the middle, where I could see neither end of the set piece. Suddenly, I WAS THERE. I was on the station. It was a complete alternate reality feeling, almost deja-vu, a deep familiarity. I paused, and a chill ran down my spine.
But I was in a hurry, and my feet took me quickly to the end of the set, and I looked back… yep, just a lit set, all alone on the soundstage, nothing I hadn’t seen a thousand times.
And yet. I had been there. On the station. For a split second, I was no longer on Stage Four, on the Paramount lot, in the middle of Los Angeles. I was in Bajoran space, on a station in the stars. It was only a moment… but the feeling and the memory has never, ever left me.
Sometimes I wonder if anyone else experienced the same thing.
I did. I’ve worked on sets before - never a sci-fi set, but I would love to one day, even as a PA (it’s my dream to voice a computer on a syndicated sci-fi show - the Enterprise’ computer is what started it). I know what to expect when walking in. I know where fantasy ends and reality begins at the edge of a line of gaff tape. But I experienced the same thing.
It wasn’t on set. It was at Star Trek: The Experience.
I was in Vegas working a booth at the international gift show. I stayed at the Hilton - which happened to host an entire Star Trek corner. Me being the nerd I am, that’s where I spent most of my free time.
I bought my ticket for the Experience. I went in expecting cheese.
I stood in that waiting room. The lights went out. I thought ‘oh, here we go. Something corny is about to happen, and I’ll know It’s just a video or something.
Then I heard it; the transporter sound effect.
When I saw the transporter room console, and the lit circle beneath my feet on the pad, when the doors slid open and I walked into the hall of the Enterprise D and looked left and right, and most of the group had moved on ahead, I was there.
There was nothing but that old familiar corridor to either side of me. There were no holes in the walls where cameras could peer through, no break-away panels, or open spaces to see into reality.
There were no gaps in the ceiling, or fresnels blasting 300 watts of light from rigging over my head.
No. The lighting was even. The carpet - plush - the walls - solid and real. The LCARS reflected my image, and I thought if I touched the screen, I could ask the computer anything, and Majel Barret would answer. I was tempted to try.
For that moment at the back of the group with space between them, me, and the Federation crewman tailing us… I was there.
I was ON the Enterprise D.
We were either in space, or in orbit - I didn’t know - but I wasn’t on Earth anymore.
The moment was short as we were ushered onto the bridge - which was still absolutely amazing.
But for that brief moment, I had crossed realities. I was in space in the halls of a ship I’d longed to walk through since I was a little girl. I wanted to linger in that hall and stay there forever. I didn’t want to go back.
EXCUSE ME!?
What just happened!?
IATSE and their new contracts happened, and this is a VERY GOOD THING. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has, under threat of an industry-wide strike by film and TV crew supported by the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild, and the Screen Writers Guild, finally agreed to negotiate better working conditions, longer turn around times to allow crew to rest between shifts, and better pay for material being put on streaming services.
What this tells us is that Marvel was using backbreaking conditions to get their shit made, and these delays are because they've been forced to actually ensure safe and fair working conditions and adequate compensation for the people working on their projects.
