April Archival Activation 4/27/21 -- Samuel MB

Samuel MB is an elementary school teacher by day, and by night he is Walt Disney. Samuel uses photoshop to incorporate Disney characters into real-life scenarios. He uses characters like the Lost Boys, Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch, and many more.

I came across this artist on my Instagram explore page. My Explore page is full of artists’ works with different varieties, themes, and media. I find it interesting how he interacts the objects with the cartoons, such as using the pumpkin and green light in the dark. He also used a candle’s light source to mimic Lumiere’s light source. Samuel used strategic photoshopping techniques to capture a new story with iconic characters. This type of art already inspires people who are fans of Disney and have seen these movies during their childhood. This type of art brings a sense of nostalgia and innocence.

Samuel MB is a huge fan of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” This film was one of the many inspirations for Samuel’s work. The film incorporated real-life footage and cartoons in the same story. Space Jam was also another popular film that was live-action/animated.

These art pieces are fun to look at; they bring a sense of happiness and comfort. They are goofy and humorous. I admire how Samuel brings the connection from the audience to the Disney characters. As the viewer, we are meant to be in Samuel’s perspective and imagine what it would be like to interact with these characters, making it a personal experience. His work is also a tribute to Walt Disney, who created these characters to create happy stories for his fans, and this was Samuel’s version of passing on those stories.

Archival Timeline: Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675)

Johannes Vermeer was born in Delft, Netherlands in 1632. Vermeer was baptized and raised religiously by his father who was a silk weaver. Vermeer worked with his father until his interests peaked into art. Vermeer started his paintings as moral pieces with Biblical meanings and over time turned his work into domestic interiors. He often painted portraits of women or the common people doing everyday work, such as the Milkmaid. Vermeer only has 36 pieces that are authenticated as his work, however, there is an estimate of 60 pieces that it did total in his life. His art was often painted on small canvases and would take years to create despite the size. He emphasized light and the littlest details throughout his work. Vermeer married and became catholic for his wife and had two children. Vermeer died in Delft, Netherlands and was buried in the Oude Kerk church in Delft, Netherlands.

6. (1665) Girl with a Pearl Earring: This piece would become one of Vermeer’s most famous pieces capturing the softness of the girl’s face and reflection of the pearl earring through his intensive use of light.

7. (1665) Girl with the Red Hat: Vermeer often worked on small customary canvases, some of his most iconic work are done on the smallest scale, and would take years to complete emphasizing detail and light throughout his works.

8. 1666) Love Letter by Vermeer: One of the few paintings that was authenticated as a Vermeer work, later in 1971, Mario Roymans, 21, would steal the work and bury it, destroying the painting. The International committee of Vermeer were able to recover and restore the painting.

9. (1935) Ghost of Vermeer by Dalí: Like any artist before their time, Vermeer inspired many famous artists after his passing, including Salvador Dalí.

10. (1615) View of Delft from the Southeast: Vermeer was buried in Delft in the old Catholic Church. Vermeer often dedicated his pieces to his practice of catholicism and would make subtle references throughout his pieces.

Statement of Intent

My theme was homebound. When we go to college we tend to think we are starting a new chapter in life, but we are also creating a new home in that chapter. I used the cursive font, “eat em up cats” for tribute to Texas State and as a natural boundary for Texas from West to East. The “San Marcos” font looks southern with the typography, so it represents country road style. “78666″ is San Marcos’ area code and the boldness represents the emphasis of the town. Although, “San Marcos” is written throughout the piece, the “78666″ is what most people will see first to recognize the town (if they’re native or associated with Texas).

Pigment Research - Now You Sea Me, Now You Don’t.

Camouflage is a survival skill whether you are a soldier on the battlefield or a cephalopod in the deep blue ocean. "Survival of the fittest" has defined camouflage as an effective tool for a species to thrive for generations. Many animals use it to protect themselves in plain sight of predators or escape after molding themselves into their backgrounds. Some animals camouflage by traveling until the landscape matches their body's color patterns. One animal, in particular, the octopus, changes its body's colorations to hide in the rocks and coral under the sea. According to the Cambridge University Press, "Octopuses have pigmented chromatophore organs, reflecting iridophores, and light scattering leucophores. These structures confer on octopuses the ability to instantaneously change their body patterns to produce a range of patterns, often described as uniform, mottled, and disruptive, to achieve deceptive and general resemblance patterns for different species."

Despite the octopuses' ability to change their body to various colors, the octopus possesses a single mid-wavelength visual pigment that makes them practically colorblind. Octopuses have to have a visual cue that helps trigger the color matching. Like a soldier painting themselves to match a tree, octopuses have to "paint" their skin to imitate their respective surroundings. The octopus also has to camouflage from the visual point-of-view of the predator. If the predator is a fish from above looking below, the octopus needs to know how to change not only to the right color patterns but also to the right shadings and hues from the predator's perspective. These fine details can mean life or death for the survival of the species. While there are over 300 octopus species, each species had to go through evolutionary development. Those who camouflaged best reproduced and carried those successful genes to their offspring, making the next generation better than the previous.

In a study by the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Napoli, Italy, scientists had a theory as to if an octopus camouflages to the general background of their surroundings termed, "general resemblance" or do they disguise to a specific feature of structures in their surrounds known as "deceptive resemblance?" They used color filters and two different species of octopuses who live in two diverse oceanic landscapes. The octopus species, O. cyanea (seen in image 2), lives in the Indo-Pacific regions with a coral reef environment, and the O. vulgaris (seen in image 1) is found in subtropical climates and lives on gravel and in rocky areas around. From the experiment, scientists found out that octopuses do indeed camouflage to deceptive resemblance and match to specific structures rather than the general area. Despite being color-blinded, the octopus's unique pupil shapes allow them to capture certain color scales and match themselves to a specific structure, like a rock or a coral. These fascinating creatures have existed for over 200 million years and will continue to do so because of this superb survival skill.

Color Walking Exercise

While I was walking, the colors that grabbed my attention the most were yellow and red. They are vibrant in the sky and stand out in trees and buildings. Although many street signs are yellow and red for safety reasons, I noticed that many consumer brands have these same colors incorporated into their logo or billboard signs. The colors were loud and bright, almost screaming at you for your attention. I thought to myself - maybe this was a marketing ploy? Brands need to grab the consumer’s eyes. San Marcos is a big, small city with lots of things going on, so brands need to design something to grab their attention.

The sky caught my attention as well. When looking at the horizon skyline, the blue is a lighter shade compared to looking directly up at the sky. Also, following that direction, the blue becomes more saturated. I believe this is because of the idea that things further away tend to be lighter. If you were looking at a mountain range, the mountains further from you would be a light purple shade, compared to the mountains right in front of you.

In one of the photos attached, there is a picture of an electric field site (at least that’s what I think it is). The poles and building site is made up of mostly grey metal posts. Depending on how the sunlight hits the poles, it creates different hues and shades of grey. This achromatic color scheme of the poles, gives the site a sense of depth.

I noticed that from afar, the grass looked like one shade of light green across the lawn. However, close up, there was a monochromatic scheme incorporated into the ground. There were various shades of green, from darker plants to lighter flowers. There were also different values of brown, from sticks to dead leaves. These browns would wash out when you stepped away from the grass and looked at it from a distance.

One of my childhood chores was walking our dogs around the neighborhood every day after school. This walk reminded me of those strolls and brought back a feeling of nostalgia. The sky, trees, and grass colors remind me of my old house and walk route. At the time, I didn’t think much of walking, except that it was an annoying chore. But now, when I took my stroll, I was enjoying it and taking in the fresh air and really observing the vibrant colors in this small town.

Alber’s Color Interaction Exercise - short response

Exercise 9 - It was mind-blowing to see the color illusion when placing the green in between the yellow and blue. I noticed that after I saw the illusion, I couldn’t stop picturing it. But at first look, I had difficulty figuring out how the yellow and green worked with the contrasted blue - after my dad pointed out the layer aspect of it, I was mesmerized.

Exercise 10 and 11 (I will admit, I had difficulty with these exercises)

- different shades, darkening and lightening depending on looking up to down or down to up.

- color at top makes the image look heavier at the bottom, especially when the middle color is closer to the bottom with the bottom color

- These are three different shades of pink, the bottom color is actually a hot pink, but in the image it appears red.

Archival Photo Set - February

The New Yorker is a weekly magazine company that publishes journalism, illustrations, and events around the country and world. I came across the Cartoon Bank database and found over thousands of cartoons and comics that were published on the New Yorker from 1925 to now. I decided to filter my search to dogs because these animals are a huge part of my life (fostered/sheltered dogs, trained dogs). These comics interest me in particular, because they are anthropomorphism in a way. The comics express dogs having human issues. I also included photos that invoked an emotion - such as the angel walking a dog (sadness) and the dog walker (nostalgia). I hope you enjoy the cartoons!

February Archival Activation - 1918 Influenza “The Spanish Flu”

I wanted to take time to step away from my cartoon archives to acknowledge that it has been a year of COVID-19. While looking at online databases, I stumbled upon the Digital Public Library of America, and they had an exhibition called American During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. Usually, I wouldn't look into this stuff because I want to escape reality when I get on the internet. However, the cover of the exhibition caught my attention with a large group of people wearing masks. What also caught my attention was the pandemic date - 1918 ( A little over a hundred years from today's pandemic). As I was scrolling through this exhibition, I noticed how these periods today (2020) and 1918 had similar practices when facing their respective pandemics.

Everyone wore masks to protect themselves from influenza, similar to today's covid prevention practices. They also had photographs of common people wearing masks in their workplace and public outings. Just like in the past, today, we have quarantine orders for businesses and capacity limits. People would have to socially distance, and families would have to quarantine separately. Although these two time periods had similar protocols, they differed in so many ways as well.

Today the news of COVID is shared constantly. We can document everything digitally and upload it online instantly to see the statistics of COVID around the world or in your neighborhood. In 1918, documenting influenza spread through print such as letters, newspapers, and bulletin boards took months and years to spread across the country and worldwide. Medical and technological practices were far less advance in this period as well. The Influenza or "Spanish Flu" killed 50 million worldwide, far more than COVID-19.

It’s crazy to see the similarities and differences between these two time periods and see the drastic change in society, medicine, scholars, politics, etc., in such a short amount of time.

The Process of the Camera Obscura

For this assignment, I had two large boxes connected with foil and parchment paper on the opposing sides. The image the box produced was very blurry and dark. So I made a second obscura out of two significantly smaller cracker-boxes. They created a good quality image, but it wasn't easy to see with all the light exposure. I decided to combine both inventions and created a better outcome. This final invention produced the above image.

The Process of the Pastel Work

Pastel was not my original plan for this piece. I wanted to complete this work with watercolor and ink. However, I couldn't get myself to master the watercolor. I watched many tutorials on YouTube, and I couldn't understand its works. I either made the paper too wet, or the paint would come out too dark. I decided to change my medium to pastel because you can still capture the picture's blurriness with this technique since the colors are more faded. I did this work on an 18″by 24″ paper. First, I used a 2HB pencil to draw defining lines from the image, like the building's horizon line separating it from the sky. Then, I went over with pastel and highlighted all the dark and light places. At first, the picture looked dark and dull, but once I added the blue sky, it balanced it out. I love the blue sky because it compliments the top colors very well.

January Archival Activation

My favorite art style has always been cartoons—classic animations, iconic characters, or simply sketches and doodles. They’re fun and often colorful, sometimes with deep meaning behind them. One of my favorite artists I’ve been following for years, Sam Cox, or better known as “Mr. Doodle,” creates large images of his famous animations on canvas. He even produces his work onto household objects like lamps and chairs, and sometimes onto clothes too.

His only tools are his mind and a marker pen. Often times, he creates his images on the impulse of what he feels like drawing. He makes up every character at the same moment that his pen hits the canvas. These characters tell a story on each canvas. He makes them friends. He makes them dislike each other. All together, they create a sense of community and unity. When critics claimed that his work wasn’t “real art,” Mr. Doodle took on the challenge of recreating famous paintings in his style, including the Mona Lisa and The Scream.

I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons and have always been intrigued with how each television show had a different style in their comics. Some shows had realist backgrounds with doodled characters overlapping the landscape. Some shows had all cartoon with few details to the backdrop but still gave an insightful story.

Cartoons are an archive of my past, and they remind me of simplicity and nostalgia. They take me back to my childhood days when my mind ran endlessly with imaginations. Cartoons have the ability to show a wide range of emotions. They can be funny, sad, or trigger anger and hate. I chose to include an oil painting done by Martta Garcia, called “Invisible,” because this image itself is a cartoon. Although you can’t see the detail in the people’s faces, the art as a whole conveys a sense of loneliness and wonder. We often think of cartoons as a happy and careless style, but it also can show insecurities and reveal the truth.

I also chose to include a photograph done by artist Elisabeth Blanchet, which perfectly captures childhood. This image brings me back to the simpler days – watching cartoons, doing homework, and having little to no worries in life. Don’t get me wrong, I love where I am today. I would not want to relive my childhood, no matter how amazing it was. Still, I’ve always had a longing to look at life the way I did as a little girl – free and full of possibilities.

A personal archive is a collection of anything that brings value or sentiment to an individual. These objects may look ordinary or customary to others, but they hold memories and nostalgic feelings that only the individual can explain. The stuffed animal bat, in particular, was not made special. It was a mass production toy from China and sitting on the toy rack of a souvenir shop in Colorado. However, this bat holds the memory of my grandmother and going on vacation with her. The pile of wrinkly sticky notes with stains on it may look like random messages to a stranger, but for me, they were memos that my mother wrote to me and put in my lunch when I was in elementary school. Typically people would keep old letters from relatives, but I also kept the envelopes because they held the same value as the letter itself. The envelope had the address of the last place my grandmother lived. As we get older, no matter how healthy we stay, our memories will fade, and holding onto physical objects is what keeps those memories alive.
