When I type in #picturebooks there were a lot of great suggestions of picture books to read that would provide educative value in the classroom. A text I found popular in the search was called ‘Cloud Country’ this text has amazing illustrations that create a sense of comfort and softness to the text. This text emphasizes the importance of illustrations and inspires imagination which would be a great text to introduce to the younger year levels but also extend to the middle year students where students would discover the great links between texts and imagery.

Prompt 2

On placement my teacher was emphasizing the 'chunking' learning focus. The teacher explicitly had some examples on the board of well known words to the students and how they could chunk those words. The teacher then gave students a post it note and gave them 10 minutes to write as many words as they can and then chunk them. I thought this as a great poster as students can explicitly see their own note and their peers notes to expand their ideas and knowledge about chunking.

Prompt 4

On my placement last year students were learning to write an opinion piece. They could either choose to write if dogs make better pets or if cats do. The teacher explicitly wrote a example on the board "Dogs make better pets because..' she explained the importance of using 'because' a to state that she has a reason as to why they make better pets. The teacher then asked the students to write at least three reasons to clarify their opinion. After the three reasons she would proof read their writing and stamp them with a checklist to reread and edit their work. I really liked this type of self assessment as it encourages the students to reread their work to make sure it make sense.

On placement I saw students reading in a group reading at the same time. I didn't favour this idea as the students maybe reading at the same level but some students maybe slower or faster and the struggling students may not be reading at all.

Looking back on my experiences with reading in primary school, we often went to the library where we sat in a blue square area called the 'pit'. I remember our teacher sitting in the corner as he read to us he would use a lot of expression in his reading and interpret characters as if they were real. I don't particularly remember the books that we read but I remember fondly our teachers explicitly reading with expression.
