Lecture Notes: Psychoanalysis
How is psychoanalysis used to influence mass culture?
This lecture made me seriously consider my future as a designer. As somebody studying graphic design, a young person and a student, I am constantly aware of pop culture and the things happening around me. I am aware of how graphic design and pop culture has an influence on society and how it can make people feel about themselves.
I love collecting fashion magazines and always buy into the latest celebrity trends, I find my interests in design are directly influenced by modern society.
In the lecture, Jeremy discussed several theories on how advertisements use psychoanalysis to their advantage, how they play with peoples unconscious desires to persuade them into buying into a brand or a product.
One of the theories he spoke about was Lecan's 'Mirror Stage'. The Mirror Stage refers to when a human first looks in a mirror and identifies themselves with what they see. He suggests that the first moment we identify ourselves stays with us, this is when we first become an individual.
Psychoanalysis is about the relation of images to fantasy and pleasure. We are fascinated with images because we recognise ourselves, Lecan proposes that advertising plays on this and the desire of who we want to be.
As designers, are we putting it out there? Are we giving pop culture a platform to take advantage of peoples desires and expectations of themselves? For the first time, I have been able to see the negative influence of pop culture on society, when I am usually blinded by the positive. Is the advert we create a mirror, are we showing or even telling people what they should see when they look in the mirror, causing them to believe they need to change who they really are? Should we be more careful with the images we create? Should they be handled with care?
This lecture caused me to question how I will act in the future, when creating advertisements and other forms of reflection.
Can an advertisement really be successful without playing on peoples desires?
