I know this is well-meaning. I genuinely do not want you to feel attacked. But this is not the peaceful, kumbaya statement that you intended it to be.
I don't mean to appoint myself The Voice Of The Jily Fandom, but canon actually is that important in this fandom space as a general rule. You don't have to agree with that rule, but if you want to engage in this space, you do need to acknowledge it.
That doesn't mean that you have to accept our characterisation of Regulus or any other character. It doesn't mean that you have to follow canon. But it does mean that you accept that most of us understand him to have been a willing and enthusiastic member of an organisation that regularly killed innocent civilians for the purpose of terrifying the population and further marginalising already marginalised groups in society. To me, that is a Very Good reason to dislike him, and it is pretty offensive to my political and moral principles to be repeatedly told otherwise.
I know it sucks to have people dislike a character you relate to and feel strongly about, but I think that is the cost of that character being essentially an OC with a problematic character's name stuck on them (and I say that with some affection, that fandom got a lot of perks by doing so!).
Letting someone like what they like is not the same as never criticising what they like, and I actually think people are as entitled to dislike things as they are to like them, though they owe the courtesy of tagging properly.
This post is not letting people be, it's scolding them, and you have no more of a right to do that than I do to scold you for liking Regulus or changing canon or whatever.
As someone who generally understands and agrees with your stance on Regulus I think there is a big difference between having an opinion about a character and expressing it (like youâre doing) and making it their lifeâs mission to hate on a character. The latter just brings negativity into fandom spaces.
I wasnât trying to tell people off for disliking Regulus. But I see that I have expressed myself poorly. Iâm sorry.
The blog I came a across really didnât post anything else other than hate on Regulus. And while they are of course allowed to do that I wonder whether it is necessary to spend that much time on hate.
I see that my post might have been a little unnecessary. But as someone who prefers Jily over Jegulus too I donât go around telling people who like Regulus why they shouldnât. I guess what I was trying to say is, itâs not that deep. Itâs fiction and fictional characters after all and there is no reason to spread negativity by spending all your energy on hating on a character.
Important to note is that there is a difference between relentlessly hating and saying I personally donât like the character because this, that and this. Because that is critique and not hate.
Yeah I get you, and on a personal level, I certainly do agree that it's more fulfilling to focus on things you like, and I definitely think people should keep the kind of negativity you're talking about to the spaces full of people who are looking for it, i.e. the anti tags. I think the 'depth' of fandom is a pretty personal thing, so I wouldn't be making blanket assumptions there, but you're right that this is at least less deep than actual discussions about the real world.
You just so happened to use phrases that really bug me because they seem to assume that the norms of this fandom, which predates the Marauders Fandom tm by quite a while, are either nonexistent or unworthy of acknowledgment, which in turn tends to send me into my Old Lady Wanting The Children Off My Lawn persona.
As for the blog you mention, they are pretty rare and easy to block. What is not easy to block are the streams of people who tag jily to either give their little hot take about why they prefer jegulus, or to expand their reach on a completely unrelated post, or to (often patronisingly) tell us that we should all like both ships even though on the canonical reading of these characters, they are mutually incoherent and incompatible and one of them is incredibly morally suspect.
It leads to a tag that is just white boxes full of blocked posts and scrolling through that is so much less fun than very occasionally being confronted with the actual hate you're reacting to. So perhaps my request to you, as someone who does straddle the divide at least a bit, is to spare a post for them too.
But still, I really appreciate the response, and please know that post was just the last straw on an already very loaded camel.
Now that Iâve seen your side I understand why you reacted that way. Iâd be mad too.
Actually thank you, because I had forgotten that people use tags to filter their feed (I never really found out how to so I donât do it). Iâll try to be more responsible with that in the future. I did block the blog I was referring to right away so thatâs a start I guess.

i love loser remus who's accidentally cool đââïž
i love that he wears grandpa sweaters and most of his classmates don't even know what he sounds like, but all of his friends are a little mesmerized by his deep voice, his muggle cigarettes, and his music taste. i love that his favorite activities involve reading a book and napping, but every time he takes the lead on a prank, it's always an epic one that hogwarts talks about for months. i love that he sucks at sports, but makes the smartest comments about quidditch matches. i love that he's so skinny that his uniform sleeves keep slipping, so he rolls them up and obliviously gives sirius a gay panic over forearms. i love that he thinks he's bland and awkward (and that he really is) but that he also has the greatest laugh the gryffindor tower has ever heard, the cleverest comments anyone could ever make, a dry humor that no one sees coming, and a sense of kindness that makes you melt in your own skin.
WHY DID NOBODY PREPARE ME FOR THE FIRST SCENE OF BILLY ELLIOT??
HOW MARAUDERS CODED IS THIS SHIT??
I was having a chill morning deciding to watch a movie about queer boys, thinking Iâd have a fun time then i hear cosmic dancer and I start sobbing uncontrollably. I canât anymore with these dead gay wizards theyâre everywhere.
Mr Lupin is Hogwarts Grammar School's most beloved English teacher. He's also an incredibly private person, which has sparked many a debate about his personal life, especially his relationship status. None of the students ever expect to meet his spouse until they finally do.
A/N: inspired by this lovely post I came across today that I couldn't resist writing a little something about. Also check it out on AO3
Remus was currently running extremely late. Traffic was absolutely horrendous, and of course heâd overslept because Sirius had turned off his alarm in his half-asleep state. To make matters worse, heâd had to get ready in such a hurry that his tie was crooked and heâd forgotten his lunch and home keys, meaning heâd have to make sure Sirius was home later that afternoon.
He glances over at the little digital clock on the dashboard of his car and curses. 8:19 it reads, as if mocking him. He's due for roll call at 8:30, and no way is he going to be at school in 11 minutes. The drive from the point he's at now takes about that time when he isnât stuck in a traffic jam.Â
Remus sighs when a car cuts him off by driving into the little spot that had just opened between his car and the one in front. This is going to take forever, he thinks, and quickly pulls out his phone to let someone know.
âRemus. Good morning,â his favourite colleague and fellow teacher at Hogwarts Grammar School, Lily, says chipperly.Â
âMorning, Lily,â he replies tiredly, and sets his phone down on his thigh on speaker. The last thing he needs now is to be pulled over because heâs on the phone while driving.Â
âIâm stuck in the worst traffic jam on the A4147. Can you let the 11A students into their room and tell them Iâll be about five minutes late? At least Iâll try to make it in less than five minutesâŠâ
She tuts affectionately, but he knows he can always count on Lily to get him out of an awkward situation. God knows heâs been in plenty of those before today.Â
âOf course I will. Be careful on the road, okay? You shouldnât be calling me at all,â she says, and he can hear her quiet laugh. Thereâs some rustling of paper in the background, and Remus suspects she must be in her office at school already.Â
âAnd let me know if itâll take longer than five minutes.â
A small weight lifts off Remusâs chest. At least that part will be sorted this morning, and he can worry about the rest later.Â
âThanks, Lily, honestly. See you in a bit,â he replies, now concentrating on starting his car when the traffic starts moving again.
âSee you,â Lily says and hangs up the phone.Â
Lo and behold, Remus finally arrives at the school parking lot around 8:33. Five minutes late wasnât such a false prediction then, luckily. He quickly fixes his crooked tie in the overhead mirror and grabs his bag from the passenger seat before hurrying inside.
He enters his classâs tutor room a few minutes later to find his students already inside, thanks to Lily, no doubt, chatting to each other or working on revisions quietly.
âGood morning, class,â he calls out as he makes his way up to the front desk a little out of breath and sets his bag on the floor beside his chair.
âGood morning, Mr Lupin,â they call out, mostly in unison. The few students that were standing quickly take their seats without much of a fuss while he starts the computer to take attendance.Â
âSorry that Iâm late, Iâm sure Mrs Potter already told you.â
A few of his students make little replies in response to his apology while he still works on getting the attendance sheet up. The door to his classroom creaks open again, and another one of his students, Seamus, walks in late as well.
âSorry, Sir, the bus was running late,â he quickly says while taking his seat.
Remus looks up to see whoâs walking in but quickly shakes his head.
âTake a seat, I was late myself this morning, so I wonât mark you. Alright, letâs get started with attendance and then I have a few information slips for you regarding your GCSE datesââ Remus begins.Â
He quickly calls out everyoneâs name in order, like he does every morning, and ticks off the names of those that are present before filling the rest of morning registration with what he had planned. The classroom is relaxed but mostly quiet, exactly how it usually is. Remus is quite a beloved teacher at his school, known for being a passionate English teacher and exceptionally kind to both the students he teaches and those he doesnât have in his classes as well.
Unbeknownst to him, while heâs preoccupied with handing out the info slips and talking about upcoming exams, a few of the girls in the back have started to talk.Â
âSo,â Lavender says to Padma and Parvati under her breath, who are both sitting at the table next to hers. They had been gossiping about which teachers they think are married while everyone was waiting for Remus to get there and of course now want to continue that conversation before English starts.Â
âWhat do you think about Mr Lupin?â she asks the two girls.
âWhat, about being married?â Padma replies, looking back to the front desk where Remus is currently taking his seat again, and Lavender just nods in response.
âHe does kind of have that whole tortured poet thing going on,â Parvati chimes in, observing the slightly tattered state of his blazer.Â
Lavender giggles under her breath but quickly looks down at the info slip on her desk when Remus looks up from the computer.Â
âGirls, please work on your revision for another ten minutes,â he speaks up. He rarely ever scolds his students, finding that shouting usually never works anyway. Not that he shouts at anyone to begin with.Â
âYes, Sir,â Padma quickly replies while Lavender mumbles a quiet âSorryâ. But as soon as Remus turns his attention away, theyâre quick to stick their heads together again.
The topic isnât exactly new either. Many of Remusâs students tend to ask him questions about his personal life outside of school, but he prefers to separate it from his career very harshly. He knows his students are only curious about him, and for many heâs their favourite teacher. But he doesnât want to blur the line between authority figure and friend too harshly and prefers to keep a few boundaries in place, such as this one.Â
Rationally, he knows he probably could tell them heâs married. Many other teachers arenât shy to talk about their spouses, such as Lily, for example. And, while her husband James isnât a teacher at their school, many students have met him when he attended school festivals or picked Lily up after classes in the afternoon. But Remus isnât so sure the same would be true about Sirius, his beloved husband of a few years now. The school administration does know that heâs gay, not that it makes a difference or is anyoneâs business, really. But for some reason heâs a bit iffy about revealing that part of his life to the student body.
Of course, the mystery surrounding Remusâs love life hasnât stopped students from wondering. In fact, it seems like itâs encouraging the speculations.
Padma whispers to the others, âAnd I bet he was proper hot when he was younger. Plus, heâs, like, ten feet tall.â
Lavender nods quickly, all three of them imagining what a young Mr Lupin must have looked and been like. He isnât really that old anyway, they assume, probably somewhere in his early to mid thirties like Mrs Potter, but imagining him in his early twenties or, even better, at their current age is almost impossible. He seems like the type of person who was born thirty, always kind and soft-spoken, and obviously passionate about English and literature in general.Â
âYeah, I vote he must be married. I reckon that golden ring heâs wearing is his wedding ring too,â Lavender speaks up, and both Parvati and Padma look to the front desk.Â
They quietly ooh and aah about the ring, never having noticed it before their conversation today.Â
Parvati leans in towards the other girls again.
âSo what do you think his wife is like?â she whispers.Â
All three girls stop to think for a moment. Itâs hard to imagine any of their teachers withâanyone, for that matter. They seem like aromantic beings that just cease to exist as soon as school ends. God forbid they have an actual life outside of school. But they must, mustn't they?
âShe must be super sweet, exactly like Mr Lupin,â Lavender assumes, still trying to picture an actual person in her head.Â
âMaybe someone like Mrs Potter, you know?â
Both Padma and Parvati nod enthusiastically at this idea. They all agree that Remusâs wife must be lovely, just like him. Before Lily revealed her husband, many actually shipped her with Remus since the two get along as colleagues so well.Â
âOi,â a voice from their left suddenly whisper-shouts so Remus doesnât hear them at the front desk.
When the girls look over, Seamus and Dean at the nearby desk are looking at them.Â
âWho are you gossiping about?â Dean asks, and Seamus snickers beside him.Â
âWeâre talking about if Mr Lupin is married or not,â Parvati replies, already annoyed that the boys canât mind their business.Â
Seamus scoffs. âDo you really think he is? I donât think soâŠâ
Lavender rolls her eyes at his obvious stupidity.
âHe has a ring,â she says judgementally and holds up her hand to point at her ring finger.Â
Both boys look to the front desk just as Remus runs a hand through his hair, and sure enough, the golden ring on his left hand catches the light. That finally makes both Dean and Seamus pause. Mr Lupin must be married then, as impossible as it sounds. Not that he isnât nice enough to get to know anyone like that, they just cannot for the life of them picture him talking to a woman in that way. Or worse, flirting with a woman in that way.Â
âWhat do you two think his wife is like?â Padma now directs the question at the two boys. Perhaps they would have some better ideas apart from âsweet and like Mrs Potterâ.Â
All five of them continue to discuss the matter for a few more minutes, but they donât really come up with anything else.Â
âI bet they read Pride and Prejudice to each other,â Seamus finally says, and both he and Dean snicker under their breaths when they imagine that.Â
âOr Romeo and Juliet,â Dean suggests, and they erupt into laughter.Â
The three girls look very offended at the boys making fun of Mr Lupin like that, even if itâs all in good fun.Â
âYou just donât understand romance,â Lavender scolds them, but it doesnât exactly help to stop them laughing.
Remus looks up from his desk again. The clock now reads 8:59, so itâs about time to start his English lesson for today anyway. He sighs and stands up, causing the boys to immediately clamp their hands over their mouths.
âAlright, since everyone seems to be done with their revisions, please get out your copies of Macbeth.â
With the sudden increase in noise in the classroom when students get out their books and prepare themselves for Remusâs English class, the five students in the back take the opportunity to continue their conversation.Â
âSo you think he romances her?â Dean says with an amused voice.
Parvati, Padma and Lavender still look cross with both him and Seamus.Â
âProbably. I bet sheâs happy to have a husband as kind as Mr Lupin. Thereâs no way she isnât just as sweet, patient, calm and humbleââÂ
But Parvati is interrupted by a knock at the door that makes all the students in class and Mr Lupin perk up from what they were currently doing.Â
Remus had been writing some things on the board in preparation for their session on Macbeth, but he looks over to the door upon hearing the knock.Â
âYes?â he speaks up, expecting it must be one of the teachers or maybe one of the students he marked as absent today trickling in later than usual.Â
But to his and everyone elseâs surprise, someone completely different opens the door. When it swings open, thereâs a man standing there that the students have never seen before. He has long-ish, black hair, a confident smirk plastered on his face, is carrying the lunchbox that Remus usually has with him in one hand, and a motorbike helmet in the other.
All jaws are on the floor, even Remusâs. He didnât expect Sirius of all people to show up here all of a sudden. And the students are in shambles, especially the female portion of the class. What dirty romance novel did this hottie walk out of?
Heâs wearing a black band tee, and the short sleeves reveal the tattoos decorating his entire arms. Upon closer inspection, he even has an eyebrow and a nose piercing. Whoever this man is, he looks effortlessly cool and is possibly the sexiest person this group of sixteen-year-olds have ever laid eyes on.
âSirius,â Remus stutters as Sirius saunters over to him, seemingly completely unaffected by the shocked reactions of the students. Remus is sure his classroom has never been this quiet before.Â
Sirius stops in front of him and confidently hands over the lunch box he was carrying.
âYou forgot this at home, love. I couldnât have you go hungry all day, could I? I was on the way to the garage anyway.â
Remusâs class has also never seen him blush before, until right this very second.Â
âYou didnât have to do that,â he answers after clearing his throat and carefully sets his lunch on the desk beside him.Â
Sirius just grins. He is shameless enough to kiss his husband right in front of his students, but heâs restraining himself for Remusâs sake. He would absolutely hate it, and it would make him incredibly uncomfortable too. Sirius would never risk that.Â
âNonsense,â Sirius says and reaches into the back pocket of his black, slightly ripped jeans to pull out Remusâs house key.Â
âAnd you forgot this,â he drops the keys into Remusâs hands and then canât resist leaning in to press a soft kiss to his flushed cheek.Â
âSee you at home, love,â he adds before turning around to leave again. He grins when he catches sight of the shocked reactions of the class and winks at them.
âHave fun with Macbeth, everyone,â he says smoothly, and then the door clicks shut softly behind him.
Thereâs a split second of stunned silence where nobody dares to say anything, still processing what the hell just happened. Lavender, Padma, Parvati and the boys Seamus and Dean all share a look. Seems like they were insanely far off with Remus having a wife in the first place.
Then the classroom erupts into absolute chaos.Â
âMr Lupin, is that your boyfriend?â
âAre you married to him?â
âSir, why have you never said you had a husband before?â
âHow long have you been together?â
âHow did you even meet?â
Remus has no idea how to even begin to rectify this situation. This is exactly why he didnât want his students to meet Sirius.
Remus refuses to be photographed, he's the one who always takes the pictures, who always ducks out of group photos and covers his face when he sees a camera pointed at him, their freinds only have a few photos of him combined.
But Sirius has books and books of sketches and paintings of Remus; close ups of his eye, the particular curl of his hair, the freckels on his cheeks and shoulders. Him drinking coffee, reading a book, half asleep on the train. Studies of his fingers, his nose, his lips. Through Sirius' pencil, Remus is the most depicted man ever.
Sirius had scared Remus plenty of times since theyâd met as children, almost daily. Every time he hopped on that motorbike, or came back from Grimmauld Place broken and silent, or cast that cruel glare his way when he was angry.
None such as this, Remus realized, as those grey eyes filled with tears and the wand in his neck dug further.
He stood at the threshold of the Order headquarters, James and Lily covered in soot behind Sirius, whose wand hand was trembling but still firmly pointed at Remusâ throat.
âW-Where..â, Siriusâ breath was shallow, âWhereâd you grow up?â. Remus looked down at him, confusion mingling with panic, what was happening?
âI.. What? I donât understaââ,
âAnswer the fucking question!â, Lily snapped, her wand rising as well.
ââSolva, Wales!â,
Siriusâ eyes darted frantically to James and back again. His wand did not lower. Remus noticed distantly that it hurt to stand, and he could hear his own heartbeat, and Siriusâ nose was bleeding and everything smelled like smoke. And he was tired..
âMoony?â, Siriusâ voice was warbled now, a tear streaking the side of his face and cutting through the dust there. Remus felt sick. âWhen is our anniversary? The real one?â.
He could almost laugh. Theyâd argued about this endlessly. Sirius considered it the date they first kissed, but Remus was adamant that it was the day heâd properly asked Sirius out.
âDecember 17th 1976â, Remus said as firmly as a he could. The damp winter evening he had stumbled over his words and invited the man clutching a wand to his pulse for a pint at the Three Broomsticks felt a world away.
Hesitantly that wand was removed, and even more carefully pocketed. Then there was only the labored breathing of James and Lily against the crumbling wall.
Siriusâ hands lay limp at his sides for barely a moment before Remus chucked caution out the window and engulfed him tightly in his arms.
âWhat happened?â, the sound was almost swallowed in Siriusâ hair, but James answered, âDeath Eaters.â
Well Remus could tell that much from the destroyed beams and furniture and smoke but why didâ âDisguised to look like Gid and Fab. Polyjuice⊠Canât be sure whoâs actually whoâ.
One of Jamesâ lenses was cracked, there was a bruise forming on his jaw. And a bit of Lilyâs hair was singed, so were her clothes. Remus pulled away just enough to see Sirius, gingerly he wiped the blood that dripped onto his lip away with a his thumb.
He saw the same thing in each of their eyes. The same creeping mold so foreign on their young, brave, faces. He felt it too. Stronger than he thought possible, tangled and sticky like tar. Making a home in his veins with each passing day. Fear.
The phrase 'easy on the eyes' meaning attractive never made full sense to Remus, clearly whoever came up with it had never thought about someone like Sirius Black. Sirius Black was so painfully beautiful it physically hurt Remus to look at him for too long. He'd gaze at those eyes, his beauty marks, the glossy long curls, his sharp jaw and high cheekbones, the way his prominent collar bones jutted out and the way that one canine that snags his lip ever so slightly when he smiles and Remus heart would stutter, his lungs would constricted and his hands ached with not being able to reach out. Looking at Sirius and not having him felt like dying most days.
