Oh my gosh I feel like the belle of the ball this morning!!

(2) Is it a cliche? Yes, but in a hot shower or in my car. I'll be shampooing and suddenly just.... full on That's So Raven moment. I have absolutely unhinged voice notes where I've had to shout at my phone the weird little notion that caught my brain while I was driving

(3) I really need to step up my commenting game because there are so many writers who inspire me and I get so nervous in their inboxes. I'm also brutally behind on the fics I'm reading. But the writers I always know I'm going to enjoy are varied and include you (!) and @brandileigh2003 and @wannabelilybriscoe and I *need* to get back to reading, I've just been so soaked in writing the last few months

(17) Genre? Oh Romance. I love the beats, I love the arcs. I am a die hard. paperback romance writer. Very excited about stretching out into a big mythic fantasy romance here this summer

(6) My writing environment is as cave like as I can get it. I'm on the John of Patmos plan. I'm alone, I'm in silence, I'm receiving visions. It's laptop and sofa and cuppa tea that has almost certainly gone cold. I'll make a new one .... as soon as I work out his sentence flow. 😂

(13) a writing habit I wish I had? I wish I was better at single story concentrating. I always have way too many irons on the fire, and sometimes it gives me real choice paralysis, you know?

(18) Soulmates AU! I have the most fuzzy of ideas bouncing around in my head, but I haven't found enough to really just.... sink my teeth into yet. But one of these days. Watch out! 😂

(7) I was honestly really surprised by the reception to Please Check Yes, it was a shorter Holiday piece for Valentines, and honestly thought it was a bit of a holiday fluff, but people really liked it!

(18) I have always wanted to write a Soulmates AU/ Red string of fate trope. I just absolutely love it, but have never found the right hook to get my teeth into. One of these days though.

(19) It hasn't started posting yet, but Canticle, my Arthuriana fic would make a fantastic show. If I had a billion dollars, it would be such a fun, lush, Medieval long form show. It would be a great like... HBO prestige drama with the costumes and the monsters and the romance.

Coming Out- Short Cohort, 490 words:

The Transfiguration textbook had been open to the same page for forty minutes. Sirius was fairly certain Remus knew this, the same way Remus always seemed to know things; quietly, without comment, stored away somewhere behind his careful eyes.

The dormitory was empty. James had Quidditch. Peter had detention. The late afternoon light came through the tower window at a low angle and caught the dust in the air and made everything feel a bit like the moment before something happened.

Sirius had been trying to say something for three days.

"Hey, Moony." He kept his eyes on a diagram of a Switching Spell he had absolutely no intention of memorizing. "What do you think of Marlene? She's pretty fit, right?"

Remus didn't look up from his notes. "Yes?"

"She asked me out."

His quill stopped moving. Just for a second. "That's. That's good." There was a pause that lasted slightly too long. "Are you two going to Hogsmeade, or—"

"I said no."

"Oh?"

"Yeah." Sirius picked at a loose thread on the duvet. The duvet was red and gold and he'd had it since first year and it was easier to look at than Remus right now. "She's not my type."

"I thought you said she was fit."

"Well she is, obviously." Sirius could hear how it sounded. Defensive. He made himself slow down. "A lot of the girls are. Marlene and Dorcas. Lily." A beat too long. "Um. Pandora?"

"Right. Yeah."

Beside him on the bed Remus had gone very still the way he did when he was paying close attention to something and didn't want you to know it. Sirius had catalogued this stillness over three years of shared dormitory. He knew it the way he knew the sound of the portrait hole and the way James laughed and the exact creak of the third stair.

"But they aren't—" He stopped. The thread came loose between his fingers. "They aren't who I'd want to go to Hogsmeade with, y'know?"

"I—" Remus started. Stopped. "Oh."

Sirius looked at him then, for the first time since he'd started talking. Remus was already looking back. Something in his expression was open in a way it usually wasn't, careful and frightened and something else underneath that Sirius didn't have a word for yet, at fourteen, but thought he might spend a long time learning.

Neither of them said anything. The dust moved slowly through the afternoon light.

"Would you want to go," Sirius said. Not quite a question. Just words, placed carefully into the air between them. "To Hogsmeade. With me."

The room was very quiet.

Remus looked down at his notes. Then back up. He put his quill down with a small, deliberate click against the desk.

"Yeah," he said. "Yeah, I really would."

Outside, someone was crossing the grounds toward the castle, laughing about something. Distantly, a door banged shut. The ordinary world, going about its business.

Neither of them went back to studying.

(Just a little thing about being 14 and scared and in love and not quite kicking down the closet door so much as creaking it open)

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

I basically have Competing Interests complete, The last four chapters are done and sitting in my files and I am debating posting them on a more rapid schedule (every week instead of bi-weekly perhaps.) and Canticle begins posting in about 3 weeks and I have been seized by the demon of smut writing and I have just so, so many little smutty one shots and a couple of not smutty but funny or devastating one shots and I wish I had like... eight more of me to do the typing. Or at least the deciding.

May Wrap-Up

this month felt like a slow reading month bc i've been locked in a few fest fics that i've been putting off for too long BUT it's been a rich rich month of discovering WIPs and getting update emails that have me dropping everything to read new chapters ASAP 😤

just a quick note, bc i've been chit chatting with some beloved fellow authors - if you have an issue with how someone writes their story or their characters, shuuuuut the fuck up <33 complain to your friends if u must, and if you don't have any of those, then maybe start with that. don't hop in the comments of a story that someone is pouring their time and effort and love into and tell them everything they did wrong. they literally didn't ask.
