As much as I love Jily and Jegulus defenders, can we please leave it at that? There‘s no reason to hate on either Lily or Regulus.

I‘m only making this post because I stumbled across a "Jily defender" who‘s posts were nothing but Regulus slander.

Let people like what they like. Even if they change the characters. Canon isn‘t that important.

I know this is well-meaning. I genuinely do not want you to feel attacked. But this is not the peaceful, kumbaya statement that you intended it to be.

I don't mean to appoint myself The Voice Of The Jily Fandom, but canon actually is that important in this fandom space as a general rule. You don't have to agree with that rule, but if you want to engage in this space, you do need to acknowledge it.

That doesn't mean that you have to accept our characterisation of Regulus or any other character. It doesn't mean that you have to follow canon. But it does mean that you accept that most of us understand him to have been a willing and enthusiastic member of an organisation that regularly killed innocent civilians for the purpose of terrifying the population and further marginalising already marginalised groups in society. To me, that is a Very Good reason to dislike him, and it is pretty offensive to my political and moral principles to be repeatedly told otherwise.

I know it sucks to have people dislike a character you relate to and feel strongly about, but I think that is the cost of that character being essentially an OC with a problematic character's name stuck on them (and I say that with some affection, that fandom got a lot of perks by doing so!).

Letting someone like what they like is not the same as never criticising what they like, and I actually think people are as entitled to dislike things as they are to like them, though they owe the courtesy of tagging properly.

This post is not letting people be, it's scolding them, and you have no more of a right to do that than I do to scold you for liking Regulus or changing canon or whatever.

As someone who generally understands and agrees with your stance on Regulus I think there is a big difference between having an opinion about a character and expressing it (like you‘re doing) and making it their life‘s mission to hate on a character. The latter just brings negativity into fandom spaces.

I wasn’t trying to tell people off for disliking Regulus. But I see that I have expressed myself poorly. I‘m sorry.

The blog I came a across really didn‘t post anything else other than hate on Regulus. And while they are of course allowed to do that I wonder whether it is necessary to spend that much time on hate.

I see that my post might have been a little unnecessary. But as someone who prefers Jily over Jegulus too I don‘t go around telling people who like Regulus why they shouldn’t. I guess what I was trying to say is, it‘s not that deep. It‘s fiction and fictional characters after all and there is no reason to spread negativity by spending all your energy on hating on a character.

Important to note is that there is a difference between relentlessly hating and saying I personally don‘t like the character because this, that and this. Because that is critique and not hate.

Yeah I get you, and on a personal level, I certainly do agree that it's more fulfilling to focus on things you like, and I definitely think people should keep the kind of negativity you're talking about to the spaces full of people who are looking for it, i.e. the anti tags. I think the 'depth' of fandom is a pretty personal thing, so I wouldn't be making blanket assumptions there, but you're right that this is at least less deep than actual discussions about the real world.

You just so happened to use phrases that really bug me because they seem to assume that the norms of this fandom, which predates the Marauders Fandom tm by quite a while, are either nonexistent or unworthy of acknowledgment, which in turn tends to send me into my Old Lady Wanting The Children Off My Lawn persona.

As for the blog you mention, they are pretty rare and easy to block. What is not easy to block are the streams of people who tag jily to either give their little hot take about why they prefer jegulus, or to expand their reach on a completely unrelated post, or to (often patronisingly) tell us that we should all like both ships even though on the canonical reading of these characters, they are mutually incoherent and incompatible and one of them is incredibly morally suspect.

It leads to a tag that is just white boxes full of blocked posts and scrolling through that is so much less fun than very occasionally being confronted with the actual hate you're reacting to. So perhaps my request to you, as someone who does straddle the divide at least a bit, is to spare a post for them too.

But still, I really appreciate the response, and please know that post was just the last straw on an already very loaded camel.

Do you have any book recommendations for people who like your writing? The longing, slow-burn aspects specifically. I also love the way in which you write love, as a desire to see and be seen.

Oh this is such a wonderful compliment!

I will confess that I've never found a single book that had everything I was looking for in terms of the romance--a relatively high stakes, dramatic situation with the romance still being the A plot while still being earnestly romantic rather than cynical. Anyone who has any recs, please I beg of you, I'd love to hear them!

Still, I have found The Itch satisfactorily scratched in the following books:

-'The Winner's Trilogy' by Marie Rutkoski - couple of all time, gloriously constructed misunderstandings and real obstacles. If this was an adult series and focused a little bit more on the romance, it would be perfect for me.

-Anything by Mhairi McFarlane, especially 'Last Night', 'Don't You Forget About Me', and 'Mad About You'. Very funny, very British, the relationships are very rootable for and the B plots raise the emotional stakes well, though sometimes they distract from the romance.

-'You and Me on Vacation' by Emily Henry (I've enjoyed her other stuff too, but this is definitely the longingiest, and I really liked the film too)

-'Lockwood and Co' by Johnathan Stroud - this one is much more focused on plots other than romance (though they're still great), but the romance is definitely there and the pining is Heavy and the way it works with the rest of the plot is just great. Genuinely cannot believe a man did this. The series does the romance even better and I will never forgive Netflix for not letting them adapt the rest of the books.

-'Persuasion' by Jane Austen - obvious but nonetheless it really does the trick! There's a kind of radio play adaptation with Florence Pugh as the narrator that goes down very well.

And that's it really! I confess when it comes to romance fiction, fanfic is much more likely to do it for me, but I am always on the hunt for an exception to this rule.

If so, will you ever share some scenes from James POV here just for fun? 🌞 I love getting into James head through your writing because he’s always so observant when it comes to how others see the world while also being so stupid when it comes to how these others see him

Hmmm, I feel like I am determined to stick to Lily's POV for the main story, but there might be some extra content from James's, especially once we get into the war. What we will definitely have are some epistolary chapters, where we'll get a lot of James's voice. You'll definitely also get evidence of how stupid he is with regards to how others' (Lily) sees him!

There's this weird tendency among fandom types where they'll take a character, and insist that they are fans of them, before changing their design, age, pronouns, backstory, blood type, species, hometown, favorite color, zodiac sign, medical history, and every other facet of their being.

They will then violently insist that this version is superior to the canon one and act like they "fixed" them and it's like. Buddy that's not the same character anymore. That's just your own oc commiting identity fraud. Like. I get the desire to experiment with different interpretations of a story. But first of all it's okay to just make an original character if that's what you really want to do. And second of all, are you even really a fan of the character you "fixed" if they're a completely different person afterwards?

Like. Idk dude for somebody who claims to be a fan you sure don't seem to like them as they are :/

Look you don’t have to publish this for your own sake but regulus in canon was a coward who only showed his regret when he knew he’d be dead and didn’t have to face the consequences. Same as Snape pretty much. Lily did so while alive. She’s the MVP

You’re so right, and even the false equivalence between Lily and Regulus as characters and moral actors is an insult to their ‘queen’. And yet, the thing is that They also know that, hence the constant disavowal of canon. What drives me crazy is how so many people are on that post with a seemingly earnest bewilderment as to why anyone would dislike Regulus as if we’re all in the same fandom and share their characterisation of him.

Like I don’t care if it’s all fanon for these people, they seem to be having fun most of the time and I love that for them. But could there at least be some acknowledgment of the allegorical bigotry and facism they’ve chosen to build that fanon off of and that people are More than entitled to have a negative view of that foundation and even perhaps that choice. Maybe that makes them uncomfortable.

This is perhaps the bed your fandom has made by choosing such a foundation upon which to build. Still, you’ve gotten a whole community and oeuvre of fanworks out of it, so please just enjoy that and make peace with the fact that your fave shares a name and basic biographical information with an absolute dropkick.

Sorry you’re right. I should have said, ‘this is not an attack’, in the tags, which everyone knows makes something magically not an attack. And I didn’t even have any passive aggressive crossing out of the word ‘some’! My bad.

You’re not forcing anyone to like Regulus, but you are actively entering a fandom space full of people who generally dislike him and scolding them for it, completely failing to engage with the quite real and politically salient reasons they might have. I am actually giving you an out here to not have to engage with that at all if you will just acknowledge that we are essentially talking about two completely different characters.

My broader point is that it is only ever going to be enraging to both sides to discuss different characters with the same name. So please, stop trying to start one of those discussions, which you obviously knew was a risk because of your tags. Notice how I did not tag jegulus or regulus and perhaps follow that example.

Something I really like about this latest chapter is that Lily’s anger aimed at James isn’t irrational. In many Jily AU stories where they mirror Lily’s anger at James in the original SWM canon, they often make out Lily to be too harsh on James and a little uncontrolled and over the top. Here it was rightful and I wholeheartedly agreed with her. It reflected the original “fight” very well and I never felt pity or bad for James.

A question: does Marlene know of James’s feelings for Lily? Or like his previous ones? Since her gaze soften when Lily speak of him? Or is it just because she appreciates James? Or does she suspect Lily’s? Does Marlene even know they knew each other? Maybe this is discussed in the earlier chapters but I re-read them like a month ago so I don’t remember exactly everything.

And oooo will the first baby be a daughter because of their discussion here? You don’t have to spoil, I’m just theorizing. I can’t remember if you mentioned the gender in the asks and I can’t go back atm to look.

And 20 chapters, how BLESSED we are! It’s been so long since I followed a long fic like this (even though idkwily is long, it’s not a super multi chapter one like this so I guess it doesn’t count), probably The Last Enemy. I’m also reading “Why didn’t they ask Evans” right now so I’m living with lots of 30s vibes 🥳

I'm so glad you pulled out that aspect of the fight--the heart of that scene was really James properly and whole-heartedly realising and admitting she was right, and for that to work, she absolutely had to Be right. The idea of James subconsciously smiling when Snape insulted Lily came relatively late in the game, but I think it really tied it together as both something he would do, but also something he would reject in himself once it was brought to his attention. There's a reason he goes to speak to Lily, he knows he feels a bit shit about what happened and the boys are only egging him on.

Marlene does not know yet, though she will! That line is referring to how Marlene softens when she herself is talking about James. He is her very favourite baby brother/second cousin, but that kind of means she doesn't really consider him a romantic prospect for anyone at this point.

Also you're right on the money, re:the first jily baby. I definitely wanted to give Harry a sister, but just thought the baby sister thing was a bit overdone (and wanted to make the story angstier by them having a child out of wedlock). It would have been even more painful and complicated for them to have a firstborn son who gets passed over for a younger sibling because of the circumstances of their birth.

But yes, 20 chapters at least! I've never attempted something like this, but writing idkwily gave me a lot of confidence that I could at least get into the high 10ks. I'm so so stoked to get into the thick of this one and so glad I have readers like you to go on the journey with me xxxxx
