i finally finally read idkwily and i just binged the entire thing in one sitting. oh my god i love my idiots so much and at one point i literally wanted to jump into the fic bash their heads together and just go HELLO MARRY EACH OTHER ALREADY??? but such beautifully written characters and such an interesting plot line. I especially loved how you potrayed snape and his and lilys friendship throughout. just so beautifully wonderfully written in every single aspect, so from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU for just creating this beautiful piece of literature.

This means so so much, I’m so happy you enjoyed it. Snape and Lily’s storyline was heavily influenced by my own tragic backstory, so I’m glad it resonated with you in particular. Biggest of hugs to you anon!!!

I've been well, though a little chilly of late as it is indeed coming into winter here. Hope summer is treating you kindly!!

I'm pretty sure that the epilogue of idkwily is set in 2026, so that's kind of where they're up to in life--nearly at their first wedding anniversary, podcasting and phd-ing. I'm sure there is a cheeky holiday booked to somewhere with some good ruins and they almost definitely have moonlit sex on a beach like the little exhibitionist freaks that they are.

Hii, it’s the anon who a while ago was going to Oxford! I just left and it was honestly one of the best trips I’ve ever had! Thanks so much to you and the other blog who gave a bunch of tips! Such an amazing place. I spent probably two hours browsing books at Blackwell’s, I went to the botanic garden and to a bunch of colleges. As a major fan of literature I was close to crying so many times lmaooo. We accidentally went during graduation lol, but it was so much fun seeing people graduate and celebrate! Made me think of James and Lily’s graduation and what that might have been like :) oh, and the funniest and sweetest thing! In the botanic garden there was a plant called “Lilium henryi”, aka “Henry’s lily” and it made me think of if it’s a crime 😭😭😭

I'm so glad!! And yes, thank you to your anonymous tour guide, so happy I could facilitate that in my way as they did a much better job than me! I'm so so keen to take another trip there, it is just so gorgeous and carries so much more personal meaning to me now. It'll soon be me asking you for tips!

I might just have to work the Lilium henryi into the story, that's such a good detail! Have scheduled myself a writing session today, so who knows what will bloom?

so I just finished if it's a crime and immediately went to your tag and read all snippets and aaaaaa I am obsessed to say the least! I am not super familiar with this era but the characterizations of this jily is so refreshing. the yearning... even if we aren't inside james' head, it's almost like I can feel it. your writing is amazing as usual and I love love love the words you use and the way you string them together. I also absolutely devour your history/chapter end notes! I love learning things! it really does add more to the story and I appreciate u sharing ur knowledge w us. I am looking forward to how the divorce issue will progress, assuming it's not over yet is it? (I am from a country where divorce is still illegal lol) you got me. you absolutely got me with the fact that this jily also exists in idkwily. I would love to read (as with anything you write) the letter if-it's-a-crime james writes to his lily that idkwily lily finds and reads to her james if you ever end up writing it :') I am DYING to know what happened in that fateful summer! are you thinking of doing full flashback chapters or will they just reference it? my imagination is running wild, quite like lily's. I also I wanna know why james didn't recognize her on that day in oxford and if james told his friends to act like they also didn't remember her and why. anyways, you mentioned in a previous ask that you will direct them to the "original graphic for this fic as to our boy will be Up to" does this graphic exist somewhere? You're absolutely right to assume that the yearning going on in James's head is loud as balls. It'll be a few chapters before he gets to voice any of it, but hopefully the wait will be worth it!

I'm also so chuffed that you read the end notes!! It makes the stupid amount of time I've spent on jstor for this fic worth it. There is definitely still more to come with the divorce plot line, I'm having good fun plotting out what comes next for Marlene!

There will also definitely be lots of letters! I'm determined to stay in Lily's POV but obviously we can't miss out on all the action on James's end during the war, so there'll be at least one entirely epistolary chapter. Apparently one of my family members has recently uncovered my great grandfather's letters back home, so hoping to read them and be inspired.

That Summer features heavily in the very next chapter, the snippet I just posted is a flashback from The Gazebo, and I think you'll enjoy what that scene turns into! I'm planning on just working in the flashbacks into the existing timeline, which hopefully doesn't feel too jumpy. Lily and James will talk about what happened at Oxford eventually, but I'm pretty sure I've spoiled it already. Basically, James clocked Lily at the rugby game she attended and watched her walk away, so he assumed she either didn't remember or wanted to pretend that she didn't remember. Sirius and Remus have indeed been given directions to pretend they don't know Lily so as to not embarrass her.

Here's the link to the original graphic, I was being coy about the fact that James will be a pilot in the war (hence the 'Up' in up to). If you do want to do a bit of homework in advance, he's a member of the 600 squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force (the one idkwily!James studied in high school), so you could research their deployments and history to get a broad sense of James's wartime plot lines.

Also also, I love a fellow stan of rugby!James!! Connor from Normal People has quite a bit to answer for there, as well as some of the less odious rugby boys from college. One day I will be brave enough to write him as a player of the sport with the actual hottest players (AFL), but for now rugby has to suffice.

You know, my entire life I’ve had this idea of a romantic dynamic in my head and I’ve never experienced it myself, and I’ve never read it anywhere or seen it in any movie. The kind of thing you daydream about when you’re a teenager, the kind of thing you make up stories in your head about when you go to bed (and you don’t want to fall asleep because you’re so into the story you’re creating), they kind of thing you can twist some songs into kind of being about. And then like BOOM – all your fics have that specific dynamic. The perfect mix of tenderness, yearning, mutual respect, and always with a good subplot.

oh anon, this was seriously just the loveliest thing to read, I've spent all this time trying to formulate a sufficient response but this will have to do!

I think I know some of what you mean, there is this certain chest-tightening ache that hurts so good that I am constantly trying to capture in my writing. I'm so happy you find the mutual respect in there amongst all the yearning, it's such a mission to be able to evoke a depth of feeling without compromising on depicting the kind of relationship that I would want for myself and the people I care about.

Life has (once again) got in the way of my writing, but I've carved out some time in a week or so to hopefully bash out this chapter. Here's a snippet of some of Lily's bedtime fantasising that I hope captures some of that feeling!

She'd watched as his lips had seemed to instinctively part, ready for yet another righteous tirade about the way Sev had specifically targeted and tormented his friend. But instead, he’d reached a bashful hand into his hair and shrugged, the lean lines of already lovely shoulders haloed by soaked cotton. ‘You’re right,’ he’d said, and how typical of her that that had been really all it had taken. Petunia would have a field day. ‘I—’ He’d shaken his head, speechless for a moment. ‘You’re right.’

The feeling of being listened to—and, worse, being found persuasive—in such earnest, by such a boy, had provoked a complete and total disarmament. Words extinguished from where they’d lain barbed and ready for action, she’d been left defenceless against the sight of him. 

To this day, Lily couldn’t quite tell if the combination of his features and the shape of his body were truly so exquisite, or if he just wore them  with such confidence that they convinced the eye that they were exactly where and how they should be.

No matter, he had been—and would forever remain—the most beautiful boy Lily had ever seen.

i’m studying abroad at oxford right now, and although i hadn’t read idkwily(bid) when i applied to the program, it has since become one of my favourite pieces of literature ever and sometimes when i walk around this beautiful city i half expect to see the characters straight from your writing walking around too, and it just adds so much more magic and depth to my experience here. thank you ❤️❤️❤️

There's such a special feeling to having a piece of media that connects you to a particular place--everytime I go to Paris, I still put on 'City of Blinding Lights' and strut around like Miranda Priestly. Ahhh I can’t wait for the update of if it’s a crime! And the baby thing, how juicy (and sad). Could you indulge us a bit more? Because that’s pretty far ahead in the fic I guess. Is it officially Henry’s? Does that mean that James does “break” his promise/trust etc that you’ve previously discussed? Okay fam, I've bought a new laptop that is almost specifically for writing this bloody story, so I feel reasonably confident that I can be held accountable to updating sometime in May.

I am very much looking forward to the angst brought about by tiny babygirl. She is legally Henry's, so yes, that does mean that James has a lapse, but by god, he'll give the honour thing the reddest of hot goes. Hopefully once you see the circumstances, you'll give him a bit of a pass! I do think Lily would have taken him out in lieu of the Luftwaffe if he'd held out any longer.

Then get down Turf Tavern. And Christ Church Meadow. Botanic Garden for Lyra's bench. Great views from the top of a University Church. Amazing view of the Racliffe Camera from the Exeter College garden. New College for GoF film location. Free exhibitions in Weston Library. Norrington Room in bottom of Blackwell's for crazy amounts of books to goggle at. Must have ice cream from G&Ds (there's 3 - pick your local!) Pierre Victoire is bloody lovely french restaurant. Gino's italian also very yum.

Outside of city centre: Summertown is fancy posh, Cowley Road is vibrant cultural, Jericho is cutesy posh. Great bus links into town. You can't drive. Cycling isn't for faint of heart - but loads of bikes and scooters you can hire on the apps. Punting is expensive, but fun. I'd go from Magdalen bridge.

If you’ve been (I just assumed since you’ve written it so well), do you have recommendations of areas that are nice? I’m going in completely blind! Staying there is just a stop on our trip but I thought I’d ask since we will have a few hours to spare!

I'd also recommend a tour if you're curious about the history and want to see the significant sights.
