35. Art is Hard
Ever go through those phases where you don’t like anything you create?
“Blessing”, March 2017
Watercolor on cold-pressed paper.
"Flower Creature", watercolor on paper. March 2017. Because the world needs more dragons with flower crowns.
Me, still confused about life.
Do you have advice on deciding what path to take in art? I know I want to make art for a living, but I have no idea whether I want to be a character designer, animator, concept artist, etc. I'm not quite sure what job my art would fit best? Thanks!
Hey! Happy New Year! There are so many paths and ways to be a successful designer/artist nowadays. The field is super broad so there will always be a job/place for you. If you want to be a character designer then you can be a character designer in lots of the tv and feature animation studios. Even motion design studios need character designers. Did you want to get into animation? live action? motion design? Ad? illustration? It’s hard to get a job where they’ll want you to do multiple jobs like character designer and environment painter. Mostly they want you to do one thing. Unless you’re like a super art god demon that can do everything. The current pipeline at Sony Animation Studios is Vis Dev:Production DesignerArt Director3D Visual Development ArtistsVisual Development ArtistsCharacter DesignersStory:DirectorWriterHead of StoryStory ArtistsImageworks:These guys handle the animation/modeling/rendering here at Sony. They tell us how expensive a certain prop/environment/character will be and if we can put it in the movie or not. There are also people in production and executives involved but I just listed out how the art departments are usually laid out. So these departments work in tandem as the movie progresses. Sometimes one department needs to finish things before the other department can continue and through that process they inspire each other with new ideas/possibilities with the movie.I hope this helps and I good luck with finding your path! It can be hard sometimes but just keep at it! Feel free to message me and I’ll try to help in any way I can!
The other week, my brain was all "you should paint dragons with flower crowns" so now here's my werk in progress
"Mayari", watercolor on watercolor paper. This is my rendition of the Tagalog deity of the moon in Philippine folklore.
