The chair situation was getting worse. Not the broken one. That had already been dealt with. I mean the internet. Apparently, breaking a chair on stream was enough to become my entire personality for the next seventy-two hours. I had seen at least six different edits of me falling.
Six. So, naturally, when I went live again, I was sitting on a kitchen chair. Not my desk chair. Not anything with wheels. Just a completely ordinary kitchen chair that, hopefully, wasn’t going to collapse underneath me.
I adjusted my microphone and looked at the camera. “Before anyone asks, yes. I’m sitting on a kitchen chair.”
The chat moved across my screen.
user56 QUINN LEARNED HER LESSON
user01 THE CHAIR LIVES
user93 NO MORE GAMING CHAIRS
“Exactly. We’ve learned from our mistakes.” I glanced at the viewer count. It was lower than usual, but that was expected. I had put the stream on subscriber-only mode. I didn’t feel like dealing with thousands of people yelling about Joe every five seconds.
For once, the chat was actually normal. Mostly.
user22 what are we playing
user67 quinn how’s the new chair
user23 show us the chair
“No.”
user23 SHOW THE CHAIR
“No.” I leaned back.
“You people are incredibly annoying.” I was scrolling through my game library when my phone buzzed beside my keyboard. I ignored it. A few seconds later, it buzzed again. I glanced over.
iMessages. I picked up my phone and unlocked it.
I looked back at my monitor. The chat had started moving.
user81 what are you smiling at quinn
user76 QUINN????
user58 WHO ARE YOU TEXTING
user7 WHY ARE YOU SMILING
I froze. I looked at my reflection in the little camera preview. Oh. Apparently, I was smiling.
I immediately stopped. “I’m not smiling.”
user24 YOU WERE
user90 WHO IS IT
user34 QUINN GOT A TEXT
I put my phone face down on the desk. “None of your business.” The chat immediately became even more interested.
I shook my head and turned back toward my computer. “Anyway. We’re playing something before you guys become detectives.” My phone buzzed again. I ignored it. It buzzed a second time.
I glanced at the camera. “…I hate streaming.”
For the rest of the stream, I made a point of keeping my phone face down. Mostly because I knew my chat. If I picked it up again, they were never going to let it go. And honestly?I had enough problems.
I managed to survive the next hour without checking my phone. Mostly. Every once in a while, I’d catch myself glancing toward it, wondering if Joe had texted again. Which was stupid.
It wasn’t like we were having some groundbreaking conversation. He was just being annoying. That’s what he did. That’s what friends did. At least, that’s what I tell myself.
“Okay, chat, I think I’m done with this game.”
user117 NO
user58 KEEP PLAYING
user92 ONE MORE
“Absolutely not. I’m bored.”
user33 QUINN HAS NO ATTENTION SPAN
“I have an attention span. It’s just selective.”
user71 that’s not how that works
“Yes it is.” I leaned back in the kitchen chair, crossing my arms. “I’m ending in like five minutes, by the way.”
Immediately, the chat started protesting. I laughed. “You guys knew this was coming. I have been streaming for three hours.”
user87 ONE MORE HOUR
user2 QUINN PLEASE
user5 DON’T LEAVE US
“I’m literally going to bed eventually.”
user5 it’s 9 pm
“Exactly. It’s practically midnight.” I glanced at the clock.
user2 9:03.
“Don’t fact-check me.” The chat filled with laughing emotes. I smiled. This was the part of streaming I actually loved. Not the numbers. Not the clips. Not the people arguing about me and Joe every five seconds. Just this. Sitting in my room, talking absolute nonsense to a bunch of people I’d somehow gotten used to seeing every day.
My phone buzzed again. I looked down. I shouldn’t have.
I glanced at the screen.
user80 who is she texting
user72 SHES DOING IT AGAIN
user64 QUINN PUT THE PHONE DOWN
I laughed.
I smiled at my phone. Again. And again, I didn’t notice I was doing it. Until chat did.
user70 THERE SHE IS AGAIN
user111 WHY ARE YOU SMILING
user98 QUINN WHO IS IT
user67 girl we’re not stupid
I quickly put my phone down. “You guys are actually so nosy.”
user53 WE KNOW
I shook my head, trying not to laugh. “Anyway, I’m ending.”
I reached for my mouse. “Thank you guys for hanging out. I appreciate you. Even though some of you are incredibly invasive.”
user99 LOVE YOU QUINN
user78 GOODNIGHT
user21 BUY A NEW CHAIR
“I’m not buying a new chair.” I paused. “Actually, I probably should.”
The chat started spamming chair emotes. “Okay, goodbye.” I clicked End Stream. The room immediately went quiet. I sat there for a second, staring at the black screen. Then my phone buzzed. I picked it up.
I laughed harder. And somehow, without really thinking about it, we kept texting. Not about the stream. Not about the chair. Just random stuff. A stupid video he’d seen. A game he’d been playing. Something I had mentioned earlier. It wasn’t anything important. It was just easy. And maybe that was why I didn’t notice how late it had gotten until I finally looked at the clock.
11:47. I stared at it. “Jesus.”
I hadn’t even realized we’d been talking that long. I set my phone down and stood up from the kitchen chair. Tomorrow, I’d probably wake up to another hundred clips from tonight. Another round of people asking who I’d been texting. Another round of jokes about Joe.
Whatever. It wasn’t a big deal. It was just Joe.

Streaming was just a hobby. Obviously, I never thought I’d actually get anywhere with it. Somehow, though, I found myself streaming almost every day. I went to college to become a cybersecurity analyst, and now I’m sitting in my bedroom talking to a camera for a living. Student debt at what cost?
I sigh as I power on my PC, the familiar hum of the fans filling my room. I log onto Twitch and pull up my stream dashboard, adjusting my microphone and making sure everything is working.
“Alright,” I mumble to myself, adjusting my headset. “Let’s see what kind of bullshit happens today.” I click Start Streaming. Almost immediately, the viewer count starts climbing. The chat floods with hi's, emotes, and random suggestions for what game I should play today. I already knew what I was playing, though.
I had watched Joe play Flash and Die not too long ago, and honestly, it looked like exactly the kind of stupid game I could see myself getting way too invested in.
I glance at chat. “Okay, okay. I know what we're playing.” The messages start flying even faster.
WHAT ARE WE PLAYING
FORTNITE PLEASE
PLAY FLASH AND DIE
I laugh. “Actually, yes. We're playing Flash and Die.” The chat immediately explodes. I grin at the screen.
“And before anyone asks, yes, I saw Joe play it.” That somehow makes everything ten times worse.
JOE????
JOE BARTOLOZZI????
QUINN SAID JOE
WAIT SHE WATCHES JOE
JOE MENTIONED
I roll my eyes, already regretting saying anything. “Yes, Joe. That Joe. You guys know we've talked before.”
Technically, Joe and I had never actually collabed. We'd texted a few times, talked about doing something together, but it never ended up happening. It wasn't weird or anything. At least, I didn't think it was. Most of his audience watched me, and most of my audience watched him, so our names tended to get thrown around together pretty often. I just didn't realize how quickly one sentence could travel.
Joe was halfway through his own stream when his chat suddenly started moving at an alarming speed.
QUINN IS PLAYING FLASH AND DIE
QUINN SAID SHE SAW YOU PLAY IT
QUINN IS TALKING ABOUT YOU
Joe looks at the chat, confused. “What?” He laughs as he scrolls through the messages. “Why are you guys telling me this?”
More messages fly past.
GO TO HER STREAM
QUINN IS PLAYING FLASH AND DIE
DID YOU KNOW SHE WAS PLAYING IT
Joe shakes his head, smiling. “She already told me she was playing that today.” Silence. Well— Not actual silence. His chat absolutely loses its mind.
????????
ALREADY TOLD YOU???
YOU GUYS TEXT???
HOW OFTEN DO YOU TEXT
THEY'RE TALKING
JOE????
Joe stares at the chat for a second. He realizes his mistake. “Oh, shut up.” The messages only get faster. “I literally just meant she told me what game she was playing.” That does absolutely nothing.
EVERY DAY???
THEY TEXT EVERY DAY
JOE AND QUINN???
NEW SHIP JUST DROPPED
Joe laughs and shakes his head. “I’m gonna have my mods ban all of you.” But he’s still smiling. And somewhere on the other side of the internet, Phoebe's chat is doing the exact same thing. The funniest part was that this wasn't even new. Any time either of us mentioned the other, even remotely, someone would make an edit.
Joe wearing a shirt I had once complimented? Edit.
Me playing a game Joe had played? Edit.
Joe laughing at something I said on stream? Somehow, another edit.
Neither of us had ever actually done anything together, yet our audiences had apparently decided that was a minor inconvenience. And now Joe had just handed them “she already told me” on a silver platter. He was never going to hear the end of it.
It’s tiring, if I’m being honest. Like, of course Joe is great. I have nothing against him. But I’m more than just a friend of his. I’m my own person, and he’s his own person. I’m not going to sit here and lie and say I’ve never watched the ship edits, though.
You would too…
Editors have a way of taking two completely normal interactions and somehow making them look like something you never even considered existed. And, admittedly, some of them are really good. The problem is the chat.
Specifically, some of his chat. The amount of hate I get for even being acquaintances with him is insane. I could literally breathe in the same general direction as Joe and suddenly there'd be fifty comments telling me to leave him alone.
It gets exhausting. Which is why I should probably be more careful about what I let happen on stream. Unfortunately, I'm an idiot. I had completely forgotten to mute my Discord notifications. I'm halfway through the game when a notification pops up in the corner of my screen.
(Discord) Joe Bartolozzi:
everyone keeps saying we should finally collab
I don't even register it at first. Then I look at it. Then I look at the chat. Then I look back at the notification.
Oh. No.
DID WE JUST SEE THAT
JOE???
QUINN
HELLO????
HE MESSAGED YOU
COLLAB????
I immediately reach for my mouse. “Okay, well..” Too late. The chat is moving so fast I can't even read it anymore.
“No. Nope. We're not doing this.” I try to go back to the game. And because apparently God himself wanted to humble me today, I immediately die. My character gets taken out in the most embarrassing way possible. I stare at the screen.
There is a long pause. “That wasn't even my fault.” Chat continues flying. “That was NOT EVEN MY FAULT. What the fu—” I rip my headphones off. “I'M GOING TO END STREAM.”
I'm laughing and yelling at the same time, trying to stand up too quickly. My knee catches the desk. I stumble backward. There's a loud CRACK. I freeze. I slowly look down. My chair is no longer in one piece. The back of it completely off.
“Oh my God.” The chat is absolutely losing it.
NO WAY
THE CHAIR 😭
QUINNCIDENT LMAOOOO
THIS IS THE BEST STREAM EVER
JOE DID THIS
“I hate all of you.” I step out of frame for a second, to assess the damage.
“This is why I can't have nice things.” I can hear the chat laughing through my monitor. I drop back down onto the floor, completely defeated. I yell, “The collab will never happen!” That only makes things worse.
Joe is still playing when his chat starts spamming messages so quickly that he can't keep up.
GO WATCH QUINN
HER CHAIR BROKE
JOE YOU BROKE HER
QUINN IS CRASHING OUT
Joe pauses his game. “What did I do?”
More messages.
YOU NEED TO SEE THIS
GO REACT TO QUINN
HER CHAIR IS GONE
Joe starts laughing before he even knows what happened. “Why did her chair break?” He pulls up her stream. The clip is already being replayed. Phoebe is sitting on the floor, completely out of frame, while her chat flies past at the speed of light. Joe watches the entire thing.
Then comes the part where she yells: “THE COLLAB WILL NEVER HAPPEN!” Joe completely loses it. He leans back in his chair, laughing. “Oh my God.” His chat is going insane.
YOU DESTROYED HER CHAIR
JOE APOLOGIZE
THE COLLAB IS NEVER HAPPENING
THIS IS YOUR FAULT
Joe wipes his eyes. “I didn't even do anything!” He watches the clip again. And starts laughing all over again.
Someone in chat asks if he's still going to collab with her. Joe looks at the message for a second. “I mean…” He smiles. “Probably.”
The chat explodes. Joe immediately realizes what he's done. “Oh, come on.”
I ended the stream approximately thirty seconds later. The second the screen went black, I sat there staring at my monitor. Silence. I look down at my broken chair. Then back at my monitor. Then at Discord. Joe's message is still sitting there. I type back.
Phoebe:
you just got me bullied by thousands of people
The typing bubble appears almost immediately.
Joe:
you broke your chair
I stare at the message.
Phoebe:
because of you
Joe:
how is that my fault 😭
Phoebe:
you texted me while i was streaming
Joe:
you forgot to mute discord
I pause.
He's right.
I hate that.
Phoebe:
shut up
A few seconds pass.
Joe:
but seriously we should actually collab sometime
I stare at the message. I'd been talking about doing a collab with Joe for months. We'd mentioned it here and there, but it always seemed to get pushed back because of schedules or other things. And now, after the most humiliating stream of my life, he's asking again. I laugh quietly to myself.
Phoebe:
after today? absolutely not
Joe:
fair enough
Then another message appears.
Joe: also your chair is definitely a Quinncident
I stare at my phone.
I hate him.
I start laughing anyway.
Phoebe: blocked
Joe: no you won't
I don't respond.
Mostly because he's right.
The next morning, I wake up to approximately fourteen thousand notifications. Clips. Tweets. TikToks. People tagging me in edits. Someone had already made a compilation titled:
JOE BARTOLOZZI DESTROYS QUINN'S CHAIR WITHOUT EVEN BEING THERE
I put my phone face down. I wasn't even going to look. I lasted about thirty seconds. Then I picked it back up. And, unfortunately, clicked the video. I watched myself fall out of the chair. Then Joe laughing. Then the comments. I groan and cover my face with both hands.
“This is going to follow me for the rest of my life.” And judging by the number of clips already being made? It probably would.
