Sketch from the pub This is a sketch I did in the Rainbow Hotel a few weeks back. It's of…
MaggieÂ
A few photos of Maggie.  My brother asked how old she is today and I’ve lost track! At least around 6 years. Here are some photos of her being *very* helpful. By the way, I’m planning a blog june post that refers to content in the third photo.Â

Street art in Melbourne part 1
This is going to be my quick fall back post topic for #blogjune when I’ve got a few things on the go. Street art in Melbourne. I don’t actively photograph it in the same way I used to, but I enjoy it a lot when I come across it. This is a piece in a Fitzroy laneway by Rone. Rone is probably in the upper echelon of Australian street artists, and does some really big pieces, so it’s nice to see…

Short sketchÂ
Quick post tonight. This one of an ink sketch from a photo I took of a guy painting in Salamanca Place in Hobart on Easter Sunday. I’ve included the sketch and the photo.  I used Schmincke aerocolour ink in a refillable pen and a bit of a wash with the same ink.

Looking at RembrandtÂ
Something I’ve been doing lately is looking at some volumes of Rembrandt drawings. Drawing includes pencil and ink on paper, whether with a nib or brush. The books include detailed and quick preparatory sketches, landscapes and sketches of figures.Â

life drawing part 2
Life drawing part 2 - in which I am fairly happy with quite a few drawings #blogjune
Sometimes life drawing is the best thing in the world. I went to a workshop on the weekend, still affected by a lingering cold, so I wasn’t sure how it was all going to go. I thought I would at least fade off after lunch. The first couple of drawings after lunch initially didn’t do much to dissuade me from this opinion. But it was more the feeling of hesitancy in doing them than the result, now…

Life drawing part 1
Today I went to a life drawing class. Took some photos of a few of the pieces. More to follow. In the meantime, enjoy the picture of the photographer’s assistant. (Also posted this pic on Instagram earlier). The picture Maggie is sitting on is 4-5 overlapping drawings on a single page. They were done using a cotton bud dipped in ink.Â

The past couple of years have been full of firsts. Last year I bought a house for the first time. And with it has come a garden. There was a small garden where I was renting, but mostly lawn, so it has been interesting to start looking after a bigger space. There are roses out the front, along with a section that contains more natives. I may come back and do a post about the roses…
I have a courtyard along the side that has been landscaped with lots of pebbles, palm trees and a couple of ferns. I’ve used this space to try out gardening in pots – especially herbs and vegetables. Here’s a list of everything I’ve planted in the past year that I’ve never grown before:
Strawberries
Chocolate mint
Mint
Basil mint
Capsicum
Thyme
Lettuce
Lemon balm
Spinach
Rainbow chard
Parsley (from seed given to me)
Coriander (from seed)
Curry plant
Daffodils (from bulbs given to me)
I’m now trying to think if I’ve missed anything. I also grew basil and tomato.
The light comes in from the north and is fabulous. I still have basil going that hasn’t gone to seed. The sun hits the bricks and bounces off onto the plants. The strawberries really didn’t go so well (thought the one in the photo looks pretty good, doesn’t it!) and the rainbow chard is being eaten by something.  I’ve had a reasonable run with the lettuce, but the current crop has gone to seed.  I think  I’ll replace it by planting some garlic.
I’m very grateful for the tips and help I’ve had, along with some cuttings.  It wouldn’t have gotten out of the ground / into the pots otherwise.

Things from the garden. My #blogjune post for Saturday. The past couple of years have been full of firsts. Last year I bought a house for the first time.
Community radio day of actionÂ
I’m not usually one for an out and out political polemic. Though if you were to look at my Twitter feed my general inclinations are fairly obvious. Today is a national Community radio day of action.  In the budget, the government has cut the funding enabling community radio stations to broadcast digitally. As a consequence a lot of these stations will lose their digital voice and reach. At the…

blog june begins
I’m taking part in Blog June for the first time in a couple of few years. Previously, I used a Blogger site A line through time that I last posted on in 2011, and when I did I talked about how I’d been using this great new(ish) social photo sharing app Instagram. I started this blog up with the idea of using it for 23 Research Data Things.  Now I’m adding #blogjune. Not too sure how I’ll go, but…

23 Research Data Things: Thing 4
Thing 4 – Data Discovery – Repositories and Portals Thing 4 looks at data discovery, particularly via repositories and portals. Ways the Weddel Seals in Antarcia record is more discoverable and accessible: A record for the data is in the ANDS portal, (which is where the link goes to), not just in the Australian Antarctic Data Centre. Users can add tags in ANDS. With the tags being searchable, the…

Data in the research life-cycle I had a look at both the UK Data Archive Lifecycle and the DCC Curation Lifecycle Model.  I also had a look at RMIT’s Research Management LibGuide, which includes the Research Data Lifecycle model from the University of California, Sana Cruz. Adapted original source: The University of California, Santa Cruz, Data Management LibGuide, Research Data Management…

23 Research Data things: Thing 2
Thing 2 is about starting to think about the different issues involved in research data management. I find it interesting to see how much government data is open and available, not just in Australia, but worldwide. Queensland Government Data is an example of the breadth of data available, from coastal storm tide data, to Landsat imagery of fire scars, (recorded annually), to public dental waiting…

New Blog and 23 Research Data Things
New Blog and 23 Research Data Things
I’m starting 23 Research Data Things a little late,  but I am starting.  As the catch-up Webinar this week mentioned, the content is designed so you can start anywhere.  I could even start with Thing 5, and go back to Thing 1. I’m also setting up a new blog using WordPress.  Back in the dim, dark past I had blogs set up for the original 23 things.  (not linked to!)  At the moment this will be one…

More @junkyprojects - with a #shida background at #landofsunshine #brunswick #burncity #melbourne #urbansculpture #streetart
another 2 minute sketch from #dropbydrawing at @ngv_melbourne this time trying not to look at the page at all. some of that shows. often i find that i like some of the really quick drawings a lot more that the drawings that take 20 minutes or more. somehow i seem to lose the freshness and looseness that comes with just looking and getting the information down on the page. This actually was more like 90 seconds and is of Mark Hilton who took the workshop today. #drawing #melbourne #ngv
