How did Hiccup spend his thousand + years as a spirit?

This question has been swirling in my mind for more than a month.

Of course chapter 43 of OTNWAS destroyed me (in the best way, kudos to @jjackfrost for creating THE masterpiece <3) I really needed to let my feelings out and bring Hiccup's past to light.

There are some scenes with Jack, but I intentionally decided to focus on the first thousand years of Hiccup and Toothless as wind spirits and Hiccup's life on Berk, with his family and friends. And the loss that came with it.

(AND I KNOW I KNOW, the ending might be a bit bitter, but if you watch the animatic backwards it finishes with Hiccup who finally recognizes Jack <3)

I got converted so hard it's embarrassing

I wasn't really in the fandom, but was familiar with it, saw an amazing animation by meltsmelt for the Of The Northmost Winds and Skies fanfic, got very intrigued, saw on tumblt that that this story is extremely loved. I read it. I literally can't start thinking about it without crying. I can't explain my feelings fully, but to say that I love it would be an understatement.

He gasped when he felt fingers brush against his own, and looked up to find Hiccup in front of him. Jack’s hand reacted on its own, reaching out to Hiccup’s. Hiccup’s mouth parted, his breath coming out in shaky puffs of mist. Jack knew that reaction well – the shock of touching after going without it for a long time.

How long had he waited?

“Hiccup,” Jack whispered, feeling his eyes widen and refill with tears.

Hiccup looked up as if Jack had slapped him. Then he smiled, almost incredulously, and nodded.

So my friend AJ and I are fully indulging in our Hijack love together, and I was like, “hey, why don’t you tell me your favourite parts of OTNWAS @jjackfrost , and I’ll try to draw them?”. They started re-reading it and sent the amazing sequence of Hiccup trying to remember what happened during their escape from the fairies up until Jack froze the ocean, and we were both like - man, this would look amazing as a comic.

So now we’re doing a comic collab :)

These are my sketches, and then AJ is doing some absolutely amazing revisions. We’ll keep sending it back and forth until we’re happy with it, and man, we can’t begin to say how excited we are to work on this!!

Even if he looked exactly like Hiccup – the same age as when Jack had left him, the same windswept hair, the same eyes that seemed to hold the whole sky in them – there was something different about him.
