I didn’t realize it on the first listen but this song is really truly also about anxiety and almost…… self loathing?

“I’m ready for combat / I say I don’t want that / but what if I do?” questioning her own morals and beliefs because she doesn’t want a war, she doesn’t want to fight but…… what if she does? merely questioning herself like that and having the anxiety that like ‘oh shit what if I’m fake and do like the drama’ when she knows she doesn’t!! ouch….

“I cut off my nose just to spite my face, then hate my reflection for years and years” to me this is a metaphor for her doing something quite spiteful in the name of revenge and then hating herself for it even years later.

“Who could ever leave me darling, but who could stay?” she KNOWS she’s a good person, she knows that people who love her will stay… but considering the things she’s done…… who could stay after that?

“The room is on fire, invisible smoke” Interestingly, the “invisible smoke” articulates that even though Taylor is in a terrible emotional state, nobody can see the fire and anxiety and depression but her.

“Help me hold onto you” she’s basically saying hey, my anxiety is through the roof I’m convinced you’ll hate me like I do but I need you in my life so please… help me keep you here next to me

does anyone think the nose part might be more literal? there’s been plenty of speculation about her undergoing different plastic surgeries (I don’t think that’s bad, but it would definitely play into the insecurity theme of the song)

please do not force an lgbt label onto anne frank. she died before she had the chance to explore her sexuality and if you need to think of her as lgbt to have empathy for her you need to reconsider how you think of holocaust victims. please do not vilify her father, a man who lost his entire family in the holocaust, for censoring the parts in anne’s diary where she expresses attraction for women. it was 1947. jewish girls were already seen as hypersexual. he was protecting her legacy as best he could, and you have no right to call him a villain for wanting what was period-typical best for his late daughter.

And it’s unfair even to blame her father at all, because ANNE FRANK CENSORED THOSE PASSAGES HERSELF by gluing brown paper over the pages, pages that we were only able to read in 2018 once non-invasive imaging was able to see the ink through the paper and glue.

Stop spreading misinformation, stop imposing identities onto a girl who never got a chance to figure herself out, and stop acting as if this suddenly makes her sympathetic.  If she wasn’t already sympathetic, you’ve got issues.
