Most of my Sonic 3 posts are just about Shadow being endlessly caught off caught and utterly baffled - bamboozled, even - by the family that is the Wachowskis and I love that. Every time he thinks he has them figured out he gets thrown another curveball. What do you mean Tom shot Sonic with a tranq when they first met?? What do you mean Sonic threw Tom and Maddie off a building?? What do you mean Knuckles punched Sonic through a wall the first time they met?? What do you mean G.U.N. tried to marry into the family?? What do you mean Sonic was raised by an owl on another planet?? What do you mean Tails and Sonic had a dance off in Siberia with angry Russian bar patrons?? What do you mean????
Thinkin about how in the first movie, the next time we see Sonic after the initial blast that caused the blackout, he’s watching agents creep up on him in the woods. Thinkin about how the last thing we heard him say was “I'm sure no one noticed that giant blue explosion, right?” Thinkin about how he wanted to hope his words were true, but knowing otherwise. Thinkin about his posture and expression, how he was hunched in on himself, and visibly scared.
Thinkin about how Sonic probably didn’t sleep that night. Thinkin about how he probably stayed up all night, scared and still reeling from his emotional outburst. Thinkin about how he was probably on high alert in case someone came. Thinkin about how Sonic probably didn’t go into town the next day to watch people, otherwise he would’ve known the government was in Green Hills sooner. Thinkin about how Sonic probably stayed in the woods, because he was too anxious and worried to go out into the open. Thinkin about how the soldiers probably didn’t sneak up on Sonic because he was waiting for them, keeping an eye on the forest, and hoping against reason that no one came to investigate.
Thinkin about how Sonic was probably having a really bad day.
Hey, man, c'mere. Listen. Get in real close, this is important.
You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic I want to want to you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise.
Despite what Sonic determinedly refuses to believe, Tom Wachowski was, in fact, young once upon a time, young enough to experience everything the typical, American teen could expect to.
He’d been rejected by girls. [Ha ha, Maddie. Yes, very funny] Fallen from a tree and scraped the skin off his knees. Choked down his first beer far too prematurely, and of course, suffered the indignity of being grounded.
It’s funny. Looking back on it now, he doesn’t even remember what he’d done to provoke that last one, he only recalls the punishment itself, and the embarrassment of telling his friends that he had to go straight home after school if he wanted to avoid the wrath of his mother. Not to mention the relentless teasing from his brothers, who would proudly flounce past his room and declare that they were going out, a privilege Tom would have given his front teeth for after the third day trapped in dull isolation.
Because the worst of it wasn’t his father’s quiet righteousness in administering the punishment, nor was it the disappointed sheen in his mother’s eyes.
No.
The worst of it, in his young and humble opinion, had to be the soul-crushing, mind-numbing, yawn-inducing boredom.
Apparently, it stuck with Tom well into adulthood, enough that he’d made a mutual agreement with Maddie that for as much as Sonic – or any of their boys – like to run headlong into danger and get up to mischief around Green Hills, the one thing they’d turn to only as a last resort is placing the flighty hedgehog under house arrest.
The same leniency applies to Tails and Knuckles, of course, though the former is such a biddable kid, he hasn’t done anything that warrants a gentle scolding, let alone a flat-out punishment.
Maddie had made the executive decision to ground Knuckles once... But the less said about that, the better.
Hell, even the term ‘punishment’ sounds too strict of a word when all he and Maddie can stomach is to ban Sonic from watching Speed for the fifth night in a row, after he tracked wet mud all over the living-room carpet just a half hour before Maddie had guests arriving for dinner.
Still, Tom muses idly as he stares up at the dull, white ceiling above his bed, maying grounding Sonic just once would have made the kid realise what a drag it is to be unwillingly housebound. Maybe then he’d learn exactly the torment he’s been subjecting Tom to ever since their unconventional little family returned home from England.
For a kid who’s only recently discovered what being grounded is, Sonic is nonetheless an excellent enforcer of the concept.
It’s been nearly four days since they all collapsed through the front door, and Tom can’t even take two steps towards the bathroom without a tiny blue missile zipping into his path to scold him for ‘not resting’, a verdant gaze shadowed by the hard, troubled line of his brow, unsuited to the kid’s formerly mischievous features.
It’s worrying Tom. It’s worrying Maddie. To a lesser extent, even Tails and Knuckles are picking up on their brother’s apprehension.
Because this isn’t the same hedgehog who came and asked them if they’d help infiltrate G.U.N Headquarters just last week.
Far from it.
Sonic can try to crack jokes and quip his way around Maddie’s soft concerns or Tom’s paternal reassurances all he likes, but actions speak much louder than words, and recently, his actions have been very telling indeed.
Only two days ago, Tom had felt the air sit easier when he dragged it into his lungs, so, already restless, he’d coaxed his aching body out of bed and made his way for the kitchen door, eager to stretch his muscles and head into the garden to soak up some late-summer sun.
Standing in front of the door to the Outside, his fingers had barely found the handle when an all too familiar rush of wind whipped past him, and within the span of mere milliseconds, the key had disappeared from its hook by the door, and the lock had been twisted firmly into place with a damning ‘click.’
For… a little too long, Tom just hovered there gormlessly with a crutch wedged under his good arm, blinking down at the handle as though he’d forgotten what to do with it.
All the while, he could feel a very specific pair of eyes boring into him from somewhere in the vicinity.
Then, he wheezed out a long, patient sigh and turned to try the garage door instead.
He was hardly surprised that it was already locked by the time he got there, when he knows damn well that Maddie leaves it open after she and the others get back from walking Ozzie.
And speaking of his wife, Maddie was in the living room at the time, watching Tails play a video game from the safety of her lap. She’d never said a word about the four unoccupied seats dotted around the room, all of them well within prime television-viewing locations. If she can have her favourite spot by the window, then Tails can have his, nestled in the hollow between her crossed legs with his fuzzy head resting back against her stomach.
Neither parent has thought it necessary to point out how much clingier their youngest has become since the showdown in space.
Besides, Tails is far from the only one…
Knuckles especially, ever tied to his role as ‘protector,’ has barely left Maddie’s side, and only then, it’s to report to Tom that she and the others – and the perimeter of the house – are still secure.
‘Good job, Knux,’ Tom will always tell him through a sigh, both immensely proud of his eldest and equally sad that he seems to have put the responsibility of the entire family’s wellbeing on his bristly, red shoulders.
They’ll have to have a Talk about that soon, after everyone has stopped winding up in a jumbled heap of limbs and spines on the same bed because the boys can barely go through the night without succumbing to the need to press as close against their adoptive parents as they can.
Tom has had an… inkling of just how narrowly he escaped death that day at G.U.N Hq, even if the others have remained remarkably cagey about the details.
And speaking of cages…
After a time, he grew desperate enough to try a window, almost managed to reach it too when, in the blink of an eye, three nails had been hammered into the frame, anchoring it to the sill with no hope of being dislodged any time soon.
Which... Okay. That was taking it a step too far.
“And the reason I’m being locked inside my own home is because…?” Tom sang to the empty dining room.
The only response he got was a timid fox peeking around the doorframe, asking Tom what he was doing out of bed.
Hey so I know we All Know This but I will NEVER be over a character being feverish and delirious and making No sense. I will never be over a glittery-eyed, shivering, distressed character weakly gripping another's arm and asking them questions they don't know the answer to, and probably don't mean anything at all. I will never be over characters calling out for people either long gone or right next to them, but unrecognizable in their delirium. I will never be over a character crying in frustration and fear over something in their head they can't explain to whoever is helping them, and all they can do in return is stroke their hair and shush them gently.
It's Mother's Day in the US, so here's a reblog of Maddie's first.

Maddie's First Mother's Day
~Monday – Six Days Before Mother’s Day
Sheriff Tom Wachowski leaned against the counter as he sipped his coffee. Maddie had gone to the clinic early today, and it was his turn to tend to their three boys. A red echidna, blue hedgehog, and golden fox sat at the kitchen island, each working through today’s breakfast.
Knuckles the echidna carefully worked a spoon into a grapefruit half, being wary to not get sprayed with juice. Again. He seemed to have an easier time now that he wore finger-less sports gloves instead of his over-sized boxing mitts. They allowed him much more dexterity for day-to-day life.
Sonic the hedgehog scooped Froot Loops into his mouth, in between yawns. The boy slept deep, but his unique metabolism meant he burned a lot of calories even while asleep. He was always tired in the mornings until he shoveled in enough food to equalize the calories he had burned the night before.
Tails the fox munched on a bowl of dry mini-wheats, taking a gulp of milk every now and then to wash them down. He focused on a small box on the counter, tweaking and tightening various cogs and screws inside with his screwdriver. The kid was always tinkering with something.
The morning was quiet, save for the sounds of three tired boys eating. Maddie usually had morning duty, and started the day with smiles, head kisses, and gentle conversation to ease the boys into full wakefulness. Tom, on the other hand, wasn’t exactly a morning person, so this slow-moving silence suited him just fine.
Stifling a yawn, he glanced at the calendar next to the archway to the living room. His wife had dutifully crossed off all previous days, with the exception of the last two. This past weekend had been crazy with yard work and multiple trips to the hardware store—the beautiful spring weather had been the perfect time to tend to some much-needed household repairs and cleanup—and the new month had started yesterday. Time to flip the page.
“Tails, no tinkering at breakfast,” Tom said as he moved to change the calendar. The little fox flicked his ears backward at the reminder, tucking the small box and screwdriver into the small bag slung across him.
“Sorry, Mr. To—uh, Dad.”
The Sheriff smiled. It had taken some time for Tails to accept this as his home, and he and his wife as his parental figures. Given the kit’s history of isolation and rejection, not only by his actual parents but also his village, it was understandable. He still slipped back into the names he called them from the beginning, on occasion. But all in all, he had acclimated to home and family life fairly well.
Tom pinned the old month’s page up, and did a quick scan of the days to come. One particular entry caught his eye, and smiled.
“Well, look at at that,” he said, perking the ears of his three boys.
“What?” Sonic asked, spooning another bite of Froot Loops into his mouth. “Look at what?”
“Mother’s Day is coming up,” Tom said, turning to refill his coffee. “This will be Maddie’s first one since you guys came crashing into our lives.”
Sonic nearly choked on his cereal. “Mother’s Day? When?”
“This coming Sunday,” Tom said, taking a careful sip from his cup. “If you want to do something, you’d better start thinking.”
“What is Mother’s Day?” Knuckles asked, eyebrow cocked.
“It’s a day when families honor the mother, or mother figure, in them,” Tails said, fiddling with a dial on his Miles Electric pad. He always carried it with him to research things he didn’t understand. “Women tend to carry the emotional and mental loads in families—like remembering all the little day-to-day stuff, being supportive and caring, stuff like that—and sometimes everything they do can get overlooked.”
Tom nodded. “Right, moms can get taken for granted simply because they’re so on top of things. A lot of things. So once a year there’s a day to remind everyone to thank them and celebrate how special they are.”
curious question--I thought Ellipsus was a program to download, not something you have to log into. So if you don't have internet access you can't write, and if the site goes down all your work is gone forever? 🥺 I avoid google docs but don't need internet for Word docs
nah its a site you log into lol, and i feel like the whole “if the site goes down all of your stuff is gone forever” is just kind of how the internet works. nothing online is permanent, not even word
and with the internet access thing, i mean i guess? id still rather use ellipsus than microslop any day of the week even if that means i cant write for a bit
Just to try and alleviate some of anon's concerns: you can download the documents you write in Ellipsus and save them as whatever word processor you have on your computer as back up (and you should, everything written online should have a saved copy offline). I've moved to LibreOffice on my personal computers, so have most of my fics saved in a combination of Ellipsus, Google Docs (because that's where I started collab writing in 2011, and it's still what I'm most comfortable using though Ellipsus is getting better with each update), and LibreOffice. Because unless you have an older form of Microsoft Word, it's also moved towards/is actively moving towards being web and subscription based only and has a chance of kicking you out forever, too.
LibreOffice is very much like MicrosoftOffice in the sense that it has spreadsheets, word processors, etc. but it's open source and free to download. It takes some getting used to, but it's my favorite option that I've tried switching to so far.
Ellipsus (and Google Docs before things went pear-shaped with them) do make it easy to work on projects if you have to move through multiple computers. Like I have a desktop, laptop, and work laptop that I'm constantly bouncing between and they can all access the most updated version of my fics/novels without me having to keep resending it to myself or carrying around a bunch of flash drives. I can also hop on my phone to type in one or two sentences so I don't forget them when I'm at the grocery store or in the drive thru at Taco Bell.
Plus, Google Docs has an option to set your documents to offline mode, so you can access them without intenet (more handy on a tablet or phone than computer in my experience, but if you're traveling and in a pinch, it can be helpful) and I hope Ellipsus gets to that point one day as well, but from what I can see they're not there yet. But the cool thing about Ellipsus, in addition to being staunchly anti-AI, is they're constantly rolling out updates as they refine the site and they're all focused on keeping writers in mind. They don't have a true app at the moment, but you can set the website as a widget on your home page if you do access it through mobile. So accessibility-wise, there are still quite a few pros to using an online word processor, you just need to remember to back up your work regularly so you don't lose everything. And to be honest, you should do that in offline word processors, too. You never know if your computer is going to crash or restart or if you lose access to Microsoft, then you also lose access to Word.
It doesn't matter if you're writing with or without internet, always back up your work.
ive been using ellipsus for roughly six months now and honestly the amount ive written in it compared to the work ive created in docs over the years is insane so im gonna jump rq because ellipsus lowkey banished my writers block 🙏
ellipsus has a feedback page where you suggest features for them to implement and see what they're planning, considering, and have rejected. if your concern is offline support, then there's good news!
they are planning to implement it! how long it'll take for it to roll out is up in the air. it could be in the next update, or it could be a while (though probably won't be too long considering how many people are advocating for it lol). the developers are pretty quick though, we tend to get one or two updates a month i think
ellipsus also has a discord server and, from my experiences working with customer support, the team is great. they're so passionate about making ellipsus a safe space for writers above all else, so they take the feedback their users give as serious as someone can
i seriously cannot reccomend ellipsus enough. it definitely has its moments because it is still a beta site, but the rough patches with ellipsus pale in comparison to the shit docs has put me through over the years lmao
I find Tails Adventure taking place before he met Sonic to be super tragic because this little boy literally killed off an evil empire and he was still being chased around by bullies until his soon-to-be big brother intervened, I think the credits of the game symbolizes it best in a way: he builds a giant robot after saving the day, only for it to explode in his face
ages 0 to 3 were HELL for that little guy 😭 the universe really said “he’ll meet sonic, but he’s gotta go through the torment chambers first”
