This 2022 wood sculpture by Chinese artist Tian Guoran depicts Master Hongyi, the Buddhist name of Li Shutong (1880–1942).

A monk, calligrapher, painter, musician, poet, and art educator, Hongyi was one of modern China’s most remarkable cultural figures.

What I love about this scene is she knew he was going to support her no matter what she wrote, but she knew she would cry no matter what he said. He knew she would cry no matter what he said, and he knew he would support her when she did. It’s all predetermined and all still meaningful.

This arc of the film has no external conflict. Everyone in Shizuku's life supports her unconditionally. Even if everyone in the world could call you and your art wonderful and tell you you worked hard, you’d still cry and not feel good enough. It’s all predetermined, it’s all still meaningful.

It'd be low-key kind of annoying, but I do think the world would be a better place if everyone went through an existentialism phase. Especially since social media allows and encourages the creation of alternate realities.

I see people online being like "How could someone think X is true? It's obviously Y!" and it's like...anyone online enough to be having this conversation is getting most of their information from self-curated feeds limited by our own preferences, language, and cultures. The idea that any human being is rational enough to be able to create a well-rounded view of other people's lives, let alone be able to interpret that data thoroughly enough to produce an accurate emotional perspective, is so unlikely as to be impossible.

And, see! The topic gets me constructing hoity-toity sentences like that one! It's annoying! I'm being annoying! But I still think it's valuable.
