I haven’t done my ten minute writings for several days now, only partly because I’ve been sick.  I never really intended this blog to be a diary of my day to day life but I’ve been fighting with myself on topics to write on and been struck with a feeling of malaise for a  variety of reasons.  I am going to step away for a short time, reevaluate how I want this blog to be, then come back to it.

Here’s another character I am currently playing in a Shadowrun tabletop game with my friends and working on the background of. Quentin Edward Dwight, who goes by Quintin, QED, or Pompom when on runs, is a dark skinned dwarf who wears his hear in dual pom poms. He was a student in a community college in the city of Chicago, shortly before the area became infested by bug spirits.  When the containment zone went up, his college became a shelter for those whose places of residence were no longer safe.  Unfortunately, after a number of disappearances, it was discovered the ground below the campus had been inhabited by ant spirits, a non-aggressive, but territorial breed of the bug spirits.  This changed his campus from a shelter to a warzone. 12:52:00 PM

To my surprise, I had a lot more energy at work today than I usually do, at least at the beginning.  Four days off in a row, even if spent sick, may have been something I needed to regain some stamina, and possibly grow some of the muscles my body sorely lacks and my job often requires.  There’s a lot more lifting and pulling and pushing involved in stocking than I’d really expect, especially with size of the stacks on pallets they send us sometimes.  Honestly, the warehouse should know the size of our freezer door, you’d think they would limit pallet heights so they could fit through that door.  Still, I’m definitely not 100% recovered from the assumed flu, and my body’s soreness is evidence of that for sure. The girls are much worse off than me.  They were sick before me, and are recovering slower than me, a thing that may have to do with my taking advantage of the free flu vaccines for employees earlier this year.  I have heard rumor that the vaccines were partially effective this year, which is better than completely ineffective for sure.  We also have guests that came in just tonight.  Crystal’s brother and sister-in-law arrived just after the girls disinfected the house to the best of their ability.  Hopefully the plague doesn’t spread. 11:54:12 PM

(I’m calling yesterday a sick day, since I have been recovering from this seasonal plague) I’ve recently put a bit of time into Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, the mobile iteration of Nintendo’s Animal crossing series.  I’ve been an on again off again fan of the animal crossing series.  I never stopped loving it exactly, I just never devoted my full attention to it and inevitably my towns denizens would greet my return with a “where have you been” as I went about the arduous, but self-rewarding task of re-weeding the entire town myself.  Pocket camp feels like it nailed the aesthetic of Animal Crossing to a point but with a distinctly mobile feel.  The usual micro-transactions are present in the form of Leaf Tickets, which are essentially just used to speed up progress on a lot of different tasks and increase storage space as far as I’ve seen.  I’ve avoided using them much, but the amount I’ve received for free from leveling up make me feel I don’t have to. The setting is not the usual house in a quiet grassy town.  Instead you own a camper and are traveling between camp sites to bring gifts to animals so they can be convinced to hang out in your camp.  Once their they regularly give you minor gifts of bells and crafting materials.  To me they feel like a different kind of decoration to place in your camp site home, a nice sofa, some tables and chairs, a rug, an elephant an eagle and some cats to adorn your furniture. 10:51:09 PM

So this is how it ends.  The whole house is plagued by an excess of phlegm.  Words are replaced only with coughing.  Throats are too constricted to even consider functioning for communication.  My voice has been robbed of me by whatever microbes have infested my sinuses and when I do squeak out a few words, they are rugged, gravelly, course, and unpleasant.  I may not make it.  Tell my wife and kids that I had no idea I had a wife and kids, my bad. Maya has some kind of mystical cure that has given life to her and Crystal.  I think she’s making it up, but I’m desperate enough to try whatever strange holistic remedy she has to offer, some sort of magical substance called pseudophedrine.  My lips have not spoken a proper sentence for most of the day.  And given my love of my own voice, this has been devastating. I took some pseudophedrine.  Oh, that’s much better. 11:18:35 PM

Scratchy throat, hoarse voice, fighting the urge not to cough.  Yep, guess I’m sick.  If Crystal has it, the whole household is infected by this point.  Maya was the first to show symptoms, that I know of.  She’s spent most of the day alternately working in bed, intermittently passing out from cold meds (or more likely just general exhaustion from the sick).

I’m not bad off yet.  Just a little bit of throat irritation is the worst I’ve got so far, but if it does get bad I’ll probably start having migraines.  Most times when I’m sick it comes with migraines.  It’s an added little bonus.  My body’s way of protesting its illness to my mind.  For now I may see what Maya is taking and ask to nab some of those off her.  Either that or pick up some cough syrup. 

Man, this is uncomfortable, especially when talking is a good percentage of what I do in my free time.  Part of streaming is keeping up a conversation to keep up the energy levels and not have too much dead air.  Sometimes those conversations are with yourself.  So having irritation in my throat definitely puts an added challenge on that.  Hopefully it passes quick, but I have tabletop live tomorrow, and I doubt it will pass THAT quick. 11:22:44 PM

The time has come once again. I’ve reinstalled World of Warcraft. The new expansion has drummed up a lot more hype among my friends than I expected. Friends I thought would never go back to Azeroth again are returning to the game in preparation to Battle for it. To be honest I wasn’t sure about it at first. An expansion whose premise seems geared more towards player versus player than player versus enemy plot seems far removed from the directions the past expansions had taken. I’d stopped playing last expansion when it became clear most of the people I knew either didn’t want to play or couldn’t keep up their subscriptions. Now though, the fervor is back. Maybe I will finally get my guild up and running, or put together a decent raid team. So much to do, so much hype. Oh yes, there’s that feeling I was missing. I think I’m ready to get back into it.

I’m about an hour into Battle Chef Brigade and I love it so far.  It’s a game from Adult Swim Games and Trinket Studios that combines a 2d brawler ingredient hunting mode with a color match puzzle mode to make a unique experience.  The premise is you play a daughter of a family that runs a small town restaurant, Mina.  She dreams of joining the Battle Chef Brigade tournament and experiencing new things outside of her simple one-town life. The gameplay is a fantastic and varied use of the mechanics.  In battles you run outside, beat up and pick up ingredients, then run back inside to prepare your dish to feed to the judge before the time is up.  It purposely feels incredibly “Iron Chef” but set in a fantasy land.  In addition there are side-jobs, hunting and solving cooking puzzles, which have already provided me a minor stump or two.   I look forward to playing more and having more to say on the game. 2:05:48 PM

Yesterday’s concert at The Geek Easy was fantastic!  Kadesh Flow opened with a remix of the Final Fantasy 6 over-world theme and brought out a trombone for his set.  The Bit Brigade came on stage with a speed runner and an NES and the speedrunner played Megaman 2 all the way through while they played a rock cover of the background musics.  Mega Ran was awesome and energetic and The Megas were amazing! Near the end I was far more beers in than I’d intended, but I had a great time!  The girls and I even got to chat for a bit with Kadesh Flow who was super cool, and Maya went and said hi to The Megas, her personal favorite of the night.  Orlando is a great area for the nerdcore scene and now that I live here I should be taking advantage of that far more often.  Time constraints aside, there’s a lot of options for nerd culture events.  This won’t be the last sweet concert I go to for sure. 11:52:08 PM

This month is the 30th anniversary of Megaman, the blue robot who ain’t afraid of no robot masters.  Tonight there’s a celebratory event at The Geek Easy, a speakeasy style nerd bar hidden behind a comic shop, being hosted by Ongaku Overdrive, a nerd music show planning group in, Orlando. I’ll be there for their concert, starting at 8 PM, but I’ve already missed their daytime events which included a friend of mine, Derek Muranowski, demoing his Endless Megaman fan game.  The concert will be several chiptune and nerdcore artists: The Megas, Bit Brigade, Mega Ran, and Kadesh Flow.  I loved the last event I went to at The Geek Easy, and I’m looking forward to this one. 6:24:12 PM

It’s the end of November, and as it leaves, so to does the mustache I let grow wild on the field of my face for the month.  It’s nothing too impressive for a month’s time, but it’s starting to get to that uncomfortable length that makes my nose and upper lip twitch, so off it goes.  It’s also the end of National Novel Writing Month, and sadly I didn’t focus any notable amount of attention on story writing.  Nothing, at least, that resulted in a complete story came out of it for me.  I will probably spend time on it outside of November, as deadlines and focused writing settings like National Novel Writing Month have a chilling effect on my ability to move.  Deer, meet headlights.  Still, if I can stir up my courage, I may write some things other than my blog posts that I show to the greater public.  I enjoyed yesterdays writing far more than I expected.  Maybe I should make character biopics a more regular subject of my blog posts.  Breathing life into the characters in tabletop games is one of my favorite parts of those games.  Of course I enjoy a bit of number crunching and scene setting, but the characters themselves are my true love.  I love crafting personalities, likes, dislikes, histories, all melded together to form a cohesive person who is almost tangible. 6:33:25 PM

It meant a huge deal to me, especially since as you all now know, we had a very similar thing happening in Drugs & Wires this chapter. Though I do hope drawing stories about people jumping off bridges isn’t gonna become my signature thing.
