The summer after Eleven closed the Gate to the Upside Down was a summer of many things. Eleven's return, most notably, but also Jonathan and Nancy's breakup and Steve learning he'd have to retake several classes with the juniors.
Nobody but Jonathan's family had seen him all summer. Hawkins decided he had killed himself.
Steve believed it, too, right up until they ran into each other in a bar the night before school started.
Things were awkward, to put it simply.
But they became much more complicated when they were partnered for a semester-long English project, reading Romeo and Juliet.
Forced together, Steve began noticing things he'd never paid attention to before: the long sleeves Jonathan always wore, the deep bruises under his tired eyes, and the way he always sat alone at lunch.
Meanwhile, Jonathan found himself reluctantly confronted with a version of Steve Harrington he didn't know existed, one whose parents weren't around much, whose weekends were filled with church, and who had lost all hope of going to college.
And so it turns out, spending four months with someone you spent years trying to avoid has a funny way of turning strangers into something else.

This fic is my therapy, if you couldn't tell, lol. And I love it dearly because Jonathan is my favorite character. It's going to be 30 chapters (Only 13 out right now) and will probably end up being about 50,000 to 60,000 words. All the chapter titles are song lyrics, which is great because I love music. I'm very excited about it because I get to put my own head cannons about characters (like that Eddie and Jonathan were childhood friends, and the fact that Robin and Eddie would get along great. They're going to be in a friend group in the end with Robin, Eddie, Jonathan, Nancy, and Steve.)
