“You’re gonna wish you stuttered.”
“He wasn’t like this before you became his Dad.”
“Well that’s just plain rude, Doc.”
“I can’t help that the kid is smart and a quick learner.”
“Wanna run that by me again?”
“I don’t think I stuttered, did I? He gets the sass from you and you know it.”
docjanetfraiser:
"Your son is sassing me. Where do you think he learned that from, hmm?"
“Uh, I’m gonna say he learned it from you, Napoleon.”

The silence is what wakes him; there’s nothing to hear - not even the sound of the guard’s radio - and it sets Jack’s teeth on edge. Four months of constant chaos, of screaming prisoners and laughing guards, means that the silence is as startling as the noise and he doesn’t move an inch as he tries to process what’s happening. Keeping his eyes closed and his face relaxed, Jack strains to hear something - anything - that would tell him where he is and what’s going on.
There’s the sound of footsteps off to the side and Jack tenses involuntarily, remembering past pain and agony dealt by an angry guard. He listens carefully, recognizing that he’s too weak to do much of anything at the moment thanks to the infection around his wrists from the chains and the lack of food - Iraqi prison guards found such creative ways to weaken a man - but he’s alert and trying hard to process what he’s hearing; it sounds like a soft humming but he’s pretty sure his ears are playing tricks on him so he stays still and silent.
It’s always suicide-mission this save-the-planet that. No one ever just stops by to say ’hi ’ anymore.
