hi im rafael, i use he/it pronouns, and am in my early twenties.

most importantly, this blog is a jonelias ship blog. most of my original posts will include textual analysis of jonelias and tge characters often through a lens of sex, sexual power dynamics, sexual abuse and exploitation. i wouldnt consider myself a jmart shipper and the way i view their relationship is antithetical to how most of the fandom views their relationship.

Tell me about the significance of cigarettes in tma please 🥺

ok! (but if you're my mutual who just began listening...i warn you)

cigarettes (and generally addiction) are tied to the Web (your will is not your own, those substances control you)

"can i have a cigarette?" line appears 3 times in the podcast: in the beginning (the very first episode), in the middle (mag 111) and in the end (mag 199)

the first time we hear it is when Jon is reading his very first statement. it's the beginning of his transformation into the Archivist - it's a point of no return, first step into fulfilling his destiny. also, it's the anglerfish who speaks those words to lure its victims, similary to how Jon is lurin us into the podcast and is himself lured into the archiving job.

the second time is when Jon talks with Gerry Keay. Gerry asks "you got a cigarette?", it causes Jon to take out his Web lighter, which Gerry notices and it's one of the few times that the lighter is mentioned in the podcast. also in the same conversation Gerry reveals the truth about the entities and the Unknowing. he tells Jon about Gertrude's explosives, it leads Jon to stopping the Unknowing, being in a coma and becoming a full avatar, which is another point of no return.

the last time we hear "can i have a cigarette" is in mag 199. it's Georgie who says it and after that Jon gives her the Web Lighter which is later used to destroy the Panopticon and that was the Web's plan from the beginning. it also leads to Jon's disappearance.

there's also another thing with cigarettes: when Jon comes out to smoke (his addiction suddenly returns after years mind you) when he talks with Jurgen Leitner, Jurgen gets brutally pipe murdered, which forces Jon leave the institute because he got accused of that murder. while on the run Jon gets marked by a few fears (for example the Desolation), which is another step in Web's plan.

so yeah, cigarettes are very important

I just saw a post talking about Gertrude and was thinking about how she, in her effort to remain human and not submit to the dread powers at any cost, ended up loosing her humanity differently by becoming a cold blooded killer and not caring about the people she sacrificed, and then Jon, by being so human and making his choices based on love, self doubt and fear, is what leads to him eventually becoming dependent on the eye, being marked by the fears and loosing his humanity that way

Actually, you know what? I'm gonna elaborate on this.

Elias canonically acts as Jon's mentor throughout seasons 1 and 2, helping Jon transition into the Archivist role. Using this mentorship role, Elias simultaneously tries to prepare Jon to take on the role of Archive and ensure that Jon is unprepared for the reality of being Head Archivist. Elias attempts to keep him blind because it makes him easier to control, but at the same time he desperately wants Jon to succeed.

Elias, quite plainly, views Jon as an extension of himself. Jon's successes reflect positively on Elias; Jon's failures are, on a certain level, Elias's failures as well. Elias wants Jon to be successful and happy only on the condition that he travels the path Elias wants him to travel.

And, to bring this metaphor to its blunt conclusion, Elias raises Jon. Every action that he takes is to further Jon's metamorphosis into the Archive, to secure a lasting legacy, to groom Jon into the perfect conduit for the Fears. He acts as a guiding hand as Jon loses his humanity, steering him in the right direction.

Elias is, in a lot of ways, the father Jon never had.

There's writing advice that says that if you write something you love but it doesn't suit the narrative you should cut it. It's called "kill your darlings." The narrative arc that Jon follows is All about whether you should give into the temptation to do things that you desperately desire even if it harms others. His arc is a question about how far are people willing to go to survive. His arc is a tragedy about losing bodily autonomy. About what happens when you lose your ability to make own choices. What happens when your choices either harm you or others. Martin and jmart do Not make narrative sense.

Martin is only ever written as pitying and infatalizing Jon. Jmart is treated as if these two star crossed lovers finally found each other but the text just doesn't support that. They would be interesting if they actually acknowledged and leaned into the horror of only having solace with someone who sees you as a recovering monster rather than writing them as wholesome beans who try their best to be "healthy", whatever healthy actually means. Jmart would be interesting and thematically relevant if Martin was portrayed as the opposite of Elias. Someone who believes he knows what's best for Jon so he must take Jon away from Elias at *any cost*. Jmart would be interesting and thematically relevant if it was portrayed as Jon choosing to defang himself even if he was miserable because it feels better than if he followed through with the Web's plot or Elias'. But instead we just get this tonally jarring, nonsensical and frankly dull as rocks story of two people who never got along to suddenly being romantically interested to "honeymooning through hell".

Jmart doesn't serve the narrative. They are why we tell writers to kill your darlings.

i really think it is more interesting to like see and view martin as someone who is stubborn and tries to "help" in a dogmatic and actively harmful way. like people like to imagine him as the top tier mental support unpaid uwu therapist for the team but there is Concrete Textual evidence that he literally wasn't and was actively terrible at supporting the people around him.

we can see this in the s2 finale arc where he snaps at tim for tim being upset at jon because both tim and jon were refusing to be empathetic to each other.

martin also Did not provide jon with the right support either. we can see from jon and daisy's friendship in s4 is he needed someone who would take the time to be around him while also calling him on his bullshit. he has more tangible emotional support from daisy, in the way that daisy and him are mirrors, than martin can.

and it would be interesting to explore this! how martin projects what He would want in the form of emotional support to others is Very interesting, there is so much to do with that, so much narrative and character depth but instead hes been reduced to ur favorite can-do-no-wrong emotionally knowledgeable perfect boy and it's boring

I'm now at season 5 of this podcast and im regretting the decision to start it, anyways here is how i see the main cast

This took me way more time that what it should have, and still I'm planning to color them and make some other pages for secondary characters and villains (micheal and helen are in their human versions (i know helen is a pretty secondary character but she's always been my one of my favorites since she first appeard))

me talking about Jonah: well, what does evil really mean?

so you see, a lot of people view evil as an intrinsic trait that informs your decisions/choices. and while it may be true for some characters, it's not the case for Jonah. he comes to the rational conclusion that the only way to not be victimised is to victimize everyone else, that the only way to not be powerless is to be the one with all the power thus the ritual. while he does enjoy causing people to suffer (and obviously observe it) he only really does it when necessary (push Daisy into hunting Jon, stop Melanie's murder attempts, revenge for the burnt statements) and it's not the driving force behind his actions. he is a cruel man but it's not cruelty or evil that drives him but calculated choices aimed at self-preservation

and even with the ritual, Jonah mentions trying prevention first and how it didn't work. there was always a chance of someone else doing a ritual and getting it right and he couldn't risk it. victimize or be victimized etc etc

also back to my original point of how people view evil as an intrinsic trait. this is why so many tma fans can't stand it when you point out the similarities between Jon and Jonah. because well, Jon isn't evil! but does it matter when his choices too cause harm? does it help his victims that he feels guilty about it?

also! this is why it's almost impossible to "redeem" Jonah because you can't really do anything about the ritual. he is right and he isn't even doing it out religious devotion! it's all cold calculated reason!
