A thing I doodled today,,, whilst looking @ photos of raccoons :O
It makes me genuinely physically sick to see how a small part of the terror fandom is talking about people they personally dislike or who have blocked them. If you wish someone death or genuine physical injury because they don't want to interact with you anymore then you have serious mental problems and should seek help. I can't believe it even needs to be said that that is beyond fucked up.

I WOULD PAY TEN TIMES AS MUCH FOR CHOCOLATE IF IT MEANT REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF SLAVES IN THE WORLD? HOW IS THIS ANY KIND OF PROBLEM.
good news, you can! the company’s called Tony’s Chocolonely and their entire purpose is to make slave-free chocolate and reform the chocolate industry.

Whole Foods carries it. If you don’t want to support an Amazon-owned company, World Market carries it. You can also buy it directly from the company.
It’s the best chocolate I’ve ever had and it’s 100% slave free. Tony’s Chocolonely works really hard to push for transparency within the chocolate industry and actually has and is following an action plan to eliminate slavery within cocoa production. They’re good people who make good chocolate.

One thing I really appreciate about The Terror is the way its portrayal of Crozier’s alcoholism punctures myths about alcoholism and about addiction in general. I’m not an addict, but I grew up surrounded by them and consequently have a bit more insight into it than your average layman, and fiction… gets it wrong, a lot. One of the things they get wrong is the concept of in vino veritas, or the concept that who you are drunk is your true self. For some reason this idea pretty much only exists when it comes to alcohol; cocaine is certainly also an inhibition-lowerer, but I’ve never seen anyone suggest that somebody blitzed out of their mind on blow is showing everyone a hidden aspect of their personality. They’re just, like, high. It’s recognised as a behaviour altering substance. Alcohol also damages the brain, the ability the think critically, the ability to emotionally regulate. Anyone who has spent time around a late stage alcoholic understands how it can sour a personality. I know some people who have become unrecognisable to me.
The fact is our inhibitions – that is, our higher thinking abilities – are as much a part of us as our raw red lizard brain reactions. That’s what having choice, or agency, means. And morality is always in the choice. The scene that shows us this most strongly re: Crozier, and how alcohol interferes with his decision-making process, is the one where he suggests throwing Silna to the wolves. He is absolutely shitfaced when he says this, so much so that even the people who are in his life who already know him to be an alcoholic are becoming increasingly concerned. This is the worse thing he ever does. If he’d actually gone through with it, it would have been unforgivable. But every single man also in that room tells him no, even though he outranks them all. Blanky especially seems about five minutes away from committing mutiny right then and there (and I do think he’d do it; Blanky doesn’t bluff). More and more I think this scene is actually the hinge on which the whole story rests. Because what follows next is his impetus for getting sober for good: Blanky almost dies, and if he had then he would have done so estranged from his oldest friend, his opinion of him destroyed. It’s a big enough deal that Crozier is willing to risk death (alcohol withdrawal can and does kill people regularly) to dry out.
Which is another thing the show acknowledges: you are still responsible for what you’ve done drunk or high. You are the only one who can be responsible and you are the only one who can say, enough.
This is such a great analysis. Yes to all.
I also think this is one of the few shows to take us through Crozier’s withdrawal in a way that forces you to face the physical agony of that process. It’s so intimate seeing Crozier in his bunk, weak and broken, having puked his guts out for days if not a week or more, begging Jopson to tell him a story. (The book did a decent job with this storyline as well, although the show does it better, IMO.)
Contrast that scene/plot line with that first time in Mad Men when Don decides to drink less. IIRC, all you get from the Mad Men ep (The Summer Man? Mid-s4, anyway) is a few moments where Don’s out of breath or his hands shake or he watches Team Creative pouring whiskey and fixates on it. But we never get the reality of seeing him as a shambling, puking mess due to withdrawal - that’s supposedly all symptomatic of the drinking itself, earlier in the season. And these symptoms mysteriously go away when Don decides to “do better” - he backslides, of course, but we don’t see him physically suffer in withdrawal until s6 or so. It’s not presented as immediate cause and effect.
The Terror shows you immediate cause and effect. Francis is counting down his whiskey stores from episode 3 on; that’s our clock. By ep 5, he’s stone drunk, but also already sick with withdrawal from the slight rationing alone. The Terror shows our story’s hero as a broken, drunken fragment of a man, and still has him make the choice to dry out because it’s what was morally right.
The Terror makes sure you see how grueling withdrawal is, and how much physical suffering it prompts, then goes right on back to showing us how that suffering both benefits and condemns the crew in turns. (Francis dries out, becomes better Captain just in time for previous leadership to make an unforced error and to miss the start of the whole mutiny whisper campaign.)

idk how the hell i’ve run a blog called ‘botanyshitposts’ for almost four years now without ever thinking to talk about this but in high school my little brother wanted a pet that wouldnt die so we got him a moss ball for $8 at a pet store and he named it tiki and it lives in this dedicated plastic tank at our parents’ house even though we’re both at college now. usually it doesnt do anything but over the past two weeks of winter break our family has watched in horror as it has gone about the process of slowly and ominously rising from its usual position at the depths of its abode to the top, where it now floats with gravel bits stuck to it from literal years of not moving. my mom has moved it to behind the sink so now whenever i go to wash my hands in the kitchen i have to face it and im scared
just squeezed all the water out of her like yall said in the replies and i put her back and shes still floating….maybe she just likes it up there
update: she sank to the bottom and stayed there for days and i thought this story was over until i WALKED OVER TO THE SINK JUST NOW
test: pet her, tell her she is a good moss ball
results: she sit
wild things about this post:
-the amount of porn bots mass reblogging this bc of the word ‘ball’
-the amount of people with extensive knowledge about native moss ball habitats and care coming out of the woodwork to reply to this post
-the amount of people endeared and riveted by her ongoing performance
I was going to post a long explanation for this diurnal migration behaviour, but I feel like a true explanation. Would just be lost.
Blessed Post
I have one too! His name is Tarim, and I got him with a friend when we went to see a real life viking ship a few times over! I love my sweet lil boyo! I hope they can be friends.
hi i was filled with a lot of love for these funky little bois and drew a thing
god im so glad you did
Today I posted what was basically a callout letter into a discord server whose one mod bullied me for weeks, only to have the post immediately deleted by said mod.
It’s what I had already expected would happen but it’s still disheartening to see someone so openly behave like some sort of 21st century chatroom equivalent of a cranky spoiled princess. Still, I know that there are people who were able to read through the entire thing and it makes me glad to know that the sentiments I voiced in it are shared by others :)
In that spirit, I wish you all a fantastic transition into the new decade and that you will also rid yourself of toxic people surrounding you :D
sometimes you buy yourself pastries that remind you of a beloved character from a 2018 limited series and make a vintage meme about it to end the year/decade. dedicated to my beloved lemon tart.
