Mary fumbled over her words. She’s been rehearsing what to say to Bash should she ever see him again, but at the moment all her well practiced words were nowhere to be found. 

He gave her a small humoring smile. “Only for the night. I’ll be on my way to Paris tomorrow morning and then it’ll be back to the Scottish borderlands after. I only stopped by to to see Francis.”

“Only Francis?”

She didn’t mean to ask that at all, but somehow the question slipped through her lips. 

Bash looked at her, jaw clenching and shoulders sagging with a sigh.

“Mary." He said her name like it was poison and prayer all at once.

"I-I meant you must have wanted to see your father as well! And you know Lola speaks of you often and-" she was rambling again. She took a breath and then softly, like a whisper, like a secret, she said, "And… I’ve missed you."
