Normally, whenever he set foot in Jitters without company, it was to whoosh his way through, get himself a cup of coffee, leave the money on the register and leave before anyone was able to tell he had been there in the first place. This afternoon, however, after having been granted a coffee break while he was out running an errand or two on behalf of his foster father, he chose to take it slow, seeing no point in rushing through what was supposedly leisure time.
“Oh, you go ahead,” he said to the young woman that had walked up to the back of the queue with him almost simultaneously, gesturing towards it and taking a step to the side so that she stood in front of him instead.
It wasn’t at all like Jo to space out. She was usually overly aware of her surroundings in an attempt not to touch anyone. But her brother had sent her a photo, something he rarely did, and the PA was grinning down at the image of her older sibling while she walked into Jitters and into the queue.
Jo startled a bit when she nearly ran into the man on her way into line, almost dropping her phone. “Oh gosh!” She blushed faintly and tried (unsuccessfully) not to look as embarrassed as she felt. “Um, thank you.”
As she stepping into line, Jo couldn’t help but study his face. “Sorry if this sounds odd, but you look familiar...”

Arms crossed as he waited for her to speak, half expecting her to decide that whatever it was she needed wasn’t worth confronting him. He grunted when she told him what it was she needed, knowing exactly what she was talking about. The knife in question was in his pocket, if he were honest. Swiss Army knives were handy and he’d had no reason to stash or toss it.
For a moment, he paused before he reached into his pocket and pulled out the knife, tossing it over to the woman. It wasn’t like he couldn’t easily find another, if he really wanted one. Besides, she’d impressed him enough to easily hand over what she wanted. “Anything else?”
She fumbled when he tossed her the knife, almost dropping it. Thankfully though, Jo’s slim fingers managed to grip the item before it hit the ground and hold it tightly. She drew it to her chest, against her fluttering heart, and closed her eyes for a moment so she could silently thank whatever higher power there might be for getting the knife back to her.
Jo opened her bright eyes back up so she could meet the larger man’s gaze. “No.” She shook her head quickly. “Nothing else. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this means to me.” The man had robbed her at gunpoint, stolen her car, and here she was thanking him. “I’ll keep my promise and tell the police to call off the search for it.”

He wasn’t sure if it was her bravery to rush up to him after the circumstances of their last meeting or the way she pleaded with him to return whatever it was out of the glove compartment. Anyone else, he probably would laughed in their face or punched them, depending on the person but something about the way she asked made him pause.
“What do ya need out of the glove box?” The contents he deemed worth a damn had been stashed away in one of his safe houses and the car had long since been dumped after being used in a heist. But if she told him, he might be able to get it back to her.
Jo’s heart was racing with fear, partially of the man who had held her at gun point and stolen her car and partially due to the expectation that he was going to laugh and steal something else from her. So when he actually inquired as to what she wanted, Jo thudding heart nearly stopped.
Her mouth opened and closed a few times before she was finally able to speak again. “U-Um, well i-it’s a swiss army knife.” A relatively plain pocket knife, old but still sturdy. The kind of thing that most people would rather forget about and buy a new one rather than facing a large criminal. Jo couldn’t forget it though. “I know it seems silly, but it’s important.”

Jo is half in tears. She clutches the sheets to her bare chest and tries to ignore the thudding in her hungover head. Her memories of the night before are plenty clear, and there was a little part of Jo that was thrilled she ended up in bed with Ray, but a larger part of her worried what their little tumble in the sheets meant for their friendship.
“But,” She sniffles, “You were drunk...I shouldn’t have taken advantage of that.” Jo doesn’t actually remember who initiated everything, but she feels guilty for doing something so intimate with Ray when he wasn’t in the right state of mind.
