As both a commissioner and somebody's whole hoping to produce bigger cross-talent projects in future, it's always important to be fully transparent with your talent.
I'm no business expert, but I know a thing or two about building an strong working relationship.
Creatives are not only expecting that their work is to be respected in a meaningful way with the at most integrity, but are hoping that their client has a valid enough reason in wanting to do business with them in hopes they may wish to do more work for them.
For example, I had a reference sheet be made that the artist in question had to unfortunately cancel due to personal matters taking up too much of their time. Since I felt a little sad that their work didn't become fully utilized I asked if I could use their w.i.p work as concept art that somebody else can use to finish the intended result while crediting then, which they consented
So when I got in contact with a different artist, I asked them if they can do something with the unfinished work, with clarity of whom draw it originally with screencaped proof that such a conversation occurred, they agreed to my request and the work went swimmingly as followed.
That's how you build trust, treat them and their work well, and they would be willing to continue that working relationship.
Do something that would disrespect their work in certain ways, and they would rightfully refuse to accept you on any future projects.
And in the case of that JagoGames situation, that is a sure fire way to burn a *lot* of bridges in people who want to continue working with you, that is deeply unprofessional way to handle such a working relationship and will only make things more difficult in future.
