When Joseph Scott was younger, he felt like there was nothing more he could’ve wanted from his life. He had his dad, a construction worker who showed up for him whenever he needed him, someone to beat him in poker and to tease about his fascination with building things. He had his mother, a psychologist who, though often distant, was always there when he got home from school. He had his little sister, a seven years younger pain in his butt who he’d protect to his last breath, and when he looked around at his home, he felt happy.
What he didn’t see, however, was that his seemingly perfect parents were sleeping on opposite sides of the bed, and the time that they were home at the same time grew fewer and far in between. Maybe it wasn’t as much that Joseph didn’t see it, but that he didn’t want to, and when his little sister crawled into his bed complaining that their parents were whispering and it scared her, he knew he wasn’t going to be able to look away any more. When Joseph was thirteen, and his sister six, Leonard and Olivia Scott got officially divorced, and though it was slow, it seemed like Leonard was going to become the only parent they had in their life. This event drastically changed Joseph’s outlook on life, because the structure that he’d once been able to so optimistically depend on was gone. Despite their father doing all he could, Joseph took it upon himself to fill the hole missing in their family.
Though he’d always liked building things, watching something together piece by piece giving him an unparalleled kind of satisfaction, this ramped up during his high school years. He continued to participate in organized sports as a way of clearing his head, but he put more of his concentration into his schoolwork, wanting to be able to create things that made sense for a living. Eventually, Joseph went on to major in structural engineering and worked his way up to a small town city planner in areas of Washington close enough to still be there for his father and little sister.
His life seemed to be on track, dating a woman that he cared for, his little sister in college, his father on his way to retirement, and Joseph well into his career, when he got a call. It was from his little sister, who had been living at home during her time at school - Leonard had begun to have tremors, and his posture was stooping in a way it never had before. She’d been holding off on asking him about it because Leonard insisted she was seeing things, but she couldn’t anymore. With Joseph and his sister’s united plea being the last stand, they were able to convince Leonard to go for a checkup. Terribly, they received a diagnosis that they’d never expected to hear - their father was suffering from early onset Parkinson’s, with symptoms he’d been ignoring for years. At the discovery of the diagnosis, Joseph dropped everything in his personal life to care for his father, refusing to let his sister put her own life on hold. Though treatment initially seemed to be helping, a bad fall while neither of his children were home ramped up Leonard’s condition. Everything stopped in Joseph’s life in order to be there for what was left of Leonard’s life, and a few months later with both of his children holding his hands he passed away.
After that, Joseph couldn’t find himself to stay in the place that held nothing but pain for him. He needed a new perspective after some research, he laid out a plan to his little sister - that he was moving, and he wanted her to come with him. They both could use a fresh start. There was a job waiting for him in Catalina, and a new college for her, if she wanted it. A bit behind on her degree, having taken off a couple of semesters to be there for Leonard, she ended up agreeing. Joseph and she arrived in Catalina almost seven months ago, and are still trying to settle in.
