Charged with the crime of homosexuality, my father received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Navy and was put in military prison.  It was not until the latter years of his life did he share this story with me.  His Navy boyfriend at the time was also dishonorably discharged.  My father said that even though they were never caught in the act, they were simply tried on hearsay.  My grandfather had to drive all night from Salt Lake City to Chicago to bail him out.  The following year my father married my mother.  I didn’t know my father very well.  He was always reserved, struggled with anxiety and always had secrets.
