New York, 1911. Longacre Square south. Times Square to you and me, with the Rector and Astor hotels flanking the New York Times building

This picture is a vivid reminder of how much Times Square changed in the 10 years following the photo. During those years, a building boom and a festival of [neon] lights turned it from something you might see in a Midwest city to the New York we know today. BTW, in 1911 it was already known as Times Square.

Really nice hi-res photo, with a large “Tangier Long Island” advertising sign on the right, which relates to an interesting topic.  Tangier was a development on the south shore of Suffolk County near present-day Shirley.  Someone really got into the topic and compiled a pretty fascinating website here:

As for the photo, since it was the basis for this postcard, it was probably created by Detroit Publishing Company; this postcard image came from the above link, as did the circa 1910 postcard image below, a depiction of the bucolic delights awaiting in Tangier.
