Hey, it’s Liora. The government has started to deport some refugees, or people seeking refugee status. Many people in our synagogue, from all different countries, are panicking. We just got out of a fascist region, and don’t want to be sent back! Please recognize that we are trying our hardest to assimilate into your culture and just wish to survive. Please don’t deport us!
It’s getting worse
Namika here. I wanted to address the company my father worked for. It wasn’t right for them to alienate my father from the other workers by emphasizing the fact that he came from another country, and for them to refer to him as an “enemy alien”. He is a full Canadian citizen, and should be treated like one. Now he’s been banned from working in a law firm just because of his race and has had to find a job elsewhere. We’re doing okay, and he’s working as a fisherman now, but this whole situation is wrong. Many days, the only people willing to buy his products are other Asian-Canadians, and he’s having troubles supporting us. Please stop thinking that we contaminate everything we touch, and treat us like regular citizens!
Stop discriminating!
Hey, it’s Liora. The other day, my father was turned down for the job as a doctor because apparently the hospital doesn’t want to involve itself with people “like us” and apparently he was “just not qualified enough”. As he was leaving, he heard the lead doctor say that there was no way that the hospital would hire a “dirty Jew”. My father was the best doctor in our hometown in Poland and was most definitely qualified enough. And just because we live in refugee housing, does not mean that we don’t bathe or have a sense of order and cleanliness. I wish people would stop talking about us like this, and that someone would realize that my father is just trying to support his family and hire him. Mainly, I wish that people would stop discriminating against us.Â
Hey, it’s Namika. I wanted to share this photo of a group of Asian-Canadian men that have gotten together to protest the new law that bans them from voting. How is this law fair? How is it just? Like Liora said, we aren’t your enemies, and we don’t want to hurt you, so please stop calling us your enemies. Please just give us back our rights to vote.Â
We’re not your enemies!
Liora here. I was just moved into a refugee camp and it’s a mess. I’m grateful that I have a place to stay and am being provided with food, but it’s not enough. There’s constantly talk about how I’m the “enemy alien” by some of the relief workers, and every time I go into a town I am looked at with suspicion because some people believe I am a spy.Â
One of my good friends from Poland tried to come to Canada as a refugee and was refused entrance because her family came from a city and apparently the government of Canada is only letting farmers into the country. She’s been sending me letters, and she sent me what she believes to be one of her last letters for a while, as her family may be trying to get out of Poland, however possible. She doesn’t know when they will have a safe place to stay and is worried for her life.Â
I want people to realize that I’m just a girl who’s trying to survive in a foreign country and that I have no intention of trying to harm others.I want people to realize that I, and my friends, just want to live in peace. I want others to realize that we may be Jewish, but we don’t want to steal your money or make you go bankrupt.  I want people to know that we may be Jewish, but we aren’t an inferior race.Â
Recognize yourself in he and she who are not like you and me.
