@joykull
I absolutely love superhero/fantasy fiction like JoJo's and Jujutsu Kaisen where the characters powers/magic is directly shaped by their personality and characterization. Like their magic is directly an extension of their will/personality forced onto reality and their power and range depends on their will to fight and determination.
Like here's an example. Bungie's Destiny started giving us Darkness based Subclasses back in 2020. Destiny's magic system is a very simple three elemental system where the three elements are Fire, Lightning and Gravity (Or the Quantum Vacuum underlying existence if you want to be technical) and the first Darkness Subclass seemed like a standard ice element but the thing was it turned out the Darkness is the domain of memory, consciousness and emotion and we weren't just casting ice but literally willing the atoms to freeze into zero entropy crystals.
The next Darkness Element was Connection which allowed us to tap into the cosmic web connecting all consciousness and literally use it to swing around like Spider Man. The thing is also that this power is also based on intent and malleable to the user in it's manifestation. A character went with a stoic "the only thing I have control over is myself" mindset with Control and learned how to dialate time.
Most of that... is mentioned in radio dialogue or lore tabs (what else is new to Destiny) but its exactly what I mean. Like if your magic system is based on connection and control and everything else is malleable to the user then there are so many possible way to go.
I love it when a series has supernatural elements present in it, but they aren't really the point. Like how Metal Gear is about military conflict and giant robots. yeah there's also psychic powers and ghosts but dont worry about it
86 Eighty-six where psychic powers just kinda exist and there's also a collective unconsciousness that can break your mind if you try interfacing with it but the story is actually about racism, spider tanks, romance and military conflict so don't worry about it my beloved.
Ace Combat as well kinda with the weird King Arthur symbolism in Zero and Razgriz Squadron in AC 5 maybe literally being the Razgriz demon.
Also Halo with Neural Physics and literally everything about the Precursors and their domain. Did you know that the Didact from 4 woke up in forerunner heaven, learned from the gravemind that the flood were the original plan and fought the Warden Eternal in an epic duel before killing him with the help of millions of vengeful souls? No because it happens offscreen in a fucking book.
Honestly I know everyone hates dark and gritty deconstructions of fantastical and optimistic media like The Boys comic by Gareth Ennis and the trillion Game of Thrones copycats after that but what I hate most about them is how they misunderstand realism.
Realism isn't gratuitous violence and blood or every character being an asshole who swears constantly. That isn't real life. Real life is just "shit happens". Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad but shit happens and you got to make the most out of it.
Making everyone an an asshole with no exception is ironically unrealistic. People are complex and horrible people can care about and be kind to others. People can also change for the better or worse. If everyone is a horrible person who never shows kindness or gets better and was always horrible then why should I care about them.
Probably the worst example of "Realism=Dark and Edgy" is Marvel Ruins by Warren Ellis. It's a "Dark Parody" of an amazing comic called Marvels about a journalist documenting the iconic heroes of Marvel and it's meant to be a "realistic take" about what would happen in real life if heroes had their origins story.
It's the most abysmal edgelord dogshit ever. Spider-man gets skin cancer from the spider and dies itching himself to death in a blanket. Nick Fury is a cannibal (and so was Captain America) who kills himself after shooting Jean Grey who is an underage prostitute. Quicksilver had all of his limbs shot off. Professor X become a tyrannical president and imprisons the X-Men in a prison run by Wilson Fisk. Hulk becomes a cancerous monster and his best friend becomes a morphine addict. The main character walks over punishers dead body in the snow and the MC just dies of cancer without doing anything.
Some people call it a tragedy or horror story where everything went wrong and the potential for heroism died out but I think the most tragic and horrifying thing about it is that innocent trees died to make if.
Something I find funny about r/curatedtumblr is how fucking contrarian people are. Like people here are terminally addicted to contrarianism disguised as nuance that they will bitch and complain about literally anything the original post was saying, even if it's brought up in the post itself and they just read over it or misunderstood it, and they WILL find a way to make it about Tumblr SJWs or Leftists being bad, usually because only politics posts blow up.
It really is like Tumblr. Comments here suck because people here are terminally Tumblrbrained in that they will write fucking essays of broad sweeping discourse using pseudo-progressive language under literally everything and try to jump through hoops to explain why they're opinion is objectively morally correct and not just something they believe in but also terminally Redditbrained in that they just have to put it in the most smug jackass way while possessing zero reading comprehension for any retorts and speaking in bad faith.
The TERF obsession with anime is so funny to me. Like TERFs have this weird fixation on anime and how a lot of trans people like it. I have heard the phrase "of course the Troon has an anime PFP" so many times and its so funny because... yeah, Trans People are usually teenagers or people who grew up in the 90s and 2000s where Anime started taking off in the west. Like trans people are 53% under 35 so they grew up with classics like Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bepop. Of course they like anime.
Also Anime has more queer characters than western media on average or at least is perceived to and Trans People who are usually disconnected from society and used to just be portrayed as men in dresses in western media will see themselves in it.
Idk I just find it funny how a bunch of British boomer women recreated the yellow peril and weird racism around anime in the 90s but also made it transphobic.
Something I am so happy is coming back to modern movies is actually good lighting and color grading.
Like I don't think you understand how utterly grey and desatured most blockbuster movies were during the 2010s. Like Night scenes are basically unseeable, everything looked grey and desatured and the color palate is limited. Now Superman, Fantastic Four and the new Gareth Edwards Jurassic World all look absolutely gorgeous and there is so much color and life in them. I am so grateful that color and good lighting is coming back to blockbusters.
Unironically one of the best looking films I have seen this decade is John Wick Chapter 4. Like it's mostly set during the night but everything is colorful and the lighting is maximalist so it looks gorgeous. One of the most underrated things about the John Wick films is the cinematography and color grading.
Honestly I have basically given up Television because of how atrocious the pacing of most TV shows are now adays because of streaming. They need to bring back 10-15 episode seasons where the episodes actually connect to each instead of just doing 8 hour movies except the movie is split into 8 consumable chunks.
Please, I can't keep doing this "6-8 episode season where most of it is build up and backstory until you get what you came for in the last episode then wait 2-3 years for another season where you actually get what you want for a whole season." Cycle.
Like I basically gave up TV for a year after watching too many long 8 hour movies where nothing happens for most of it then having to wait 2-3 years for the thing I actually came for. Like the pacing is both way too slow in that nothing is happening and way too fast in that there's no breathers or slice of life episodes.
Like Breaking Bad which has 62 episodes in five seasons flows infinitly better and is way more bingable than any of the shows that were made to be binged. Because stuff is actually happening every episode and they have the time to tell side stories and show character arcs and aren't just rushing to the final episode.
yoinking this from twitter cause i want to hear yalls opinions!
Red Dead Redemption 2. Though I'd go more for a series than movie.
If I need a movie of any video game? It's either gonna be A) an Ace Combat 7 movie or B) Metal Gear Solid 3. If I want animation? Psychonauts, Destroy all Humans, etc.
My ultimate dream is a Halo movie though.
God I would fucking kill for an movie version of Ace Combat 0 or Ace Combat 5. Top Gun Maverick showed me that masses crave Ace Combat.
Anyways if I could put the budget into an animated series then I'd make an adaptation of Destiny's Books of Sorrow
But I wouldn't do the books of sorrow 1:1. Instead, start out with a race that has the same technology level as humanity did prior to the golden age. Some cities spread out in their oceans, some space stations, etc... then we see a Hive ship come along to seed the planet and destroy it. At this point in time we get to see some minor Hive powers get showcased to tell the viewers that this is a magical civilization going against a tech one. Then it starts escalating, we see the lore tab where the death singers destroy the ecumenopolis in IX.II. We start seeing the more esoteric parts of Hive magic and how it effortlessly demolished trillions of living beings in a moment's notice. We get scenes of the vast Spacies of these worlds, their continent sized ship, their mechas, their gravity weapons, all destroyed.
Some time later we get to see more of the Hive and get to see that this is just super advanced technology and not as magical as we thought. Another battle goes on and we see the Qugu fight, where they traverse across galaxies to find out what happened to their allies, finding out these civilizations have gone extinct, they tell this to the ecumene. And we start seeing every crazier applications of Darkness tech being used. I want the viewers to realize that calling it advanced technology is just a misunderstanding, and make the difference between paracausality and regular magic be shown. At the end I want to see the fight where Te'Qal sacrifices the entire Qugu afterlife to damage a single Pyramid ship, only to fail and be consumed by the Witness. At the end, it's no holds barred. Where we see the ecumene using its spacetime deleting weapons, the timelike manipulations of quria, and them utterly failing to stop Oryx and the absolute terror it is to see the galaxies collapse into death and ruined areas of spacetime. The death of the taishibethi gets animated, their solar Dyson swarm destroyed by the Hive, and them pulling out their trump card in the form of their queen, only for it to be taken moments later. And the Harmony, at the center of their galaxy, using the Radiant black hole to delete the Hive ships coming there way, only for them to circumvent the space between them and landing on their black holes accretion disk and their worlds. Causing the harmony to despair and kill themselves before the Hive kill them. End credits we see the Hive sisters part their ways and spread across their entire galactic bubble, only for the camera to pan out and state that this happened 4.5 billion years ago, leaving the viewer to realize that this shit happened long ago, and that its only gotten exponentially worse.
I think one of my favorite things about the Witness or Winnower discussion for who communed with who in the Darkness, is it made me question who the HELL Oryx was talking to. Since the Witnesss would never say “My man Oryx” it’s the Winnower.
And that means between the three Osmium siblings, Oryx got his philosophy straight from the source.
It's still incredibly funny to me how Xivu Arath and Savathun were stuck with the whole Light and Darkness conflict because they had to deal with the Witness's bullshit, while Oryx not only got his Darkness aligned philosophy directly from the source but also has The Winnower constantly glazing him and hyping him up and calling him "My Man Oryx" and shit. Oryx is just built different.
I also find it really funny how that the Winnower, the omnipotent cosmic embodiment of Negation and absence that created the Multiverse as nothing more than a bet, constantly goes out of it's way to glaze us to the point of, after so much speculation and arguing over whether he is real or not, showing up at the end of The Final Shape just to go "Witness? First Knife? Never heard of them. Listen, I just want to say that I am real proud of your work so far. Keep up the good fight."
Honestly I think the reason my type is tall and buff yet lean guys with cut abs and pecs bigger than some girls breasts despite the fact that they are incredibly rare is that I always was the biggest and tallest guy in at school or I always felt like it with a beard and full chest hair at 16 when I just wanted to be small and thin and without body hair and it gave me gender dysphoria. I would look at those buff Japanese/chinese bodybuilder guys like Mett0606 (people of culture know) that I found hot and obsessively work out and diet for month to look like them but always felt like I was getting nowhere because I wanted to be with them but thought I wanted to be them until I eventually broke down and became burnt out and lazy and then found out I was trans and wanted to be with them.
Or I just have a size difference kink. That's probably it.
Probably my favorite iteration of the evil God of Death and War trope and Hyper malevolent Eldritch Horror trope is the Winnower from Destiny.
The Winnower can best be described as the abstract platonic concept of simplicity and Winnowing given form. All simplicity and simplification from the way your brain simplifies sensorial inputs into concepts and ideas you can think about to natural selection to the act of death to the act of imposing order onto chaos and removing unnecessary aspects of a system. All fall into his domain. He isn't a god of death as much as a god of absence and removal.
The thing is. He isn't a god of death and evil. We use his powers for good all the time. The simple act of enforcing laws and justice technically falls into his domain. He doesn't think existence is suffering And he himself says this that nihilists who believe that nothing matters and life hastens Entropy bore him.
He just... Believes that existence is a constant battle against all and you have to abide by his law: Exist lest you fail to exist. Essentially he embodies competition and opportunism to the max. The clashing of markets and ideals and laws and nations all pleases him and whatever comes out on top at the end of the day is worthy of existing.
He firmly, deeply believes that he has already won. Even if you, the player, beat his minions and chosen and those who fight in his name. You have already proven his point and made his choice. So he just hams it up. He fucking calls a millions of years old alien God-King who has sterilized entire galaxies "My man" and tells him to "kill them and take their stuff". It's so entertaining.
And the thing is we never have or will fight him. He is deeply proud of us, the player, to the point of glazing us after we beat one of his admirers. He just occasionally pops up in lore tabs to go "Hey, how are you doing. You beat this alien god yet? You did? Nice. Anyways I just want to say that I am a big fan of your work and you should keep at it, even if you don't like me back.
Played and finished the Call of Duty Cold War campaign
Like I did not expect this to be this good and to have such charming characters and writing. Like there was a conversation between two of the Characters, The MI6 girl and the quiet Israeli guy, and it was actually insanely engaging and I was hyper invested in their back and forth. The Dialogue options are surprisingly great, especially for Call of Duty, and your choices to spare or kill certain individuals matter and contribute to the ending.
The mission aren't the standard linear run and gun until you reach a scripted set piece or turret sequence. I had so much fun disobeying Adler and doing the exact opposite of everything he said during that one mindfuck mission and the KGB infiltration mission is another highlight.
Like I am so used to CoD campaigns, especially CoD campaigns after Black Ops 2 being mindless slop and having plots that fall apart after five minutes of thinking so this actually surprised me. I never thought I'd say this but the Call of Duty devs could make a great RPG if they locked in.
Honestly It's weird having an emergent "Fuck it we ball. No worldbuilding doc or character sheet. Just random ideas that sound cool and vibes." Style of writing, especially as a new writer with an insane level of perfectionism and an inferiority complex , because the first attempt and the second attempt and the third attempt and God knows how many attempts will be utter dogshit but you will think you cooked every time until someone tells you it's dogshit. Like your pacing is schizophrenic, your tone is off, there's too many POV switches, the worldbuilding makes no sense, the characterization is blunt as a hammer with you saying instead of showing emotions and the exposition is all clunky and telling you instead of showing.
And everytime you think you are the hottest shit ever at the start of the attempt only to rage and despair when you realize it's utter dogshit. It's so frustrating and I nearly gave up multiple times.
Then as you rage and restart over and over again, eventually you will lock in and make a draft that's just right, that is perfect, and then everything is only going up from there. I think I hit that point by the 8 or maybe tenth restart. Everything started flowing right, the pacing had actual breathers, I learned how to actually show and don't tell emotion and how to write character arcs and banter, I learned how to write an opening that isn't information overload for the reader and my worldbuilding started coming together.
And it only got better and better from there.
I have been grinding at this novel since 2024 began and it has seen a complete overhaul and rewrite in everything other than basic premise over three times and now I feel satisfied that I don't have to restart ever again. I got it perfect. It's so satisfying. And you will get there too as long as you don't give up and you will know when it clicks.
Writing is kinda like a rogue-like is what I'm saying.
Honestly my favorite subversion/version of the hyper malevolent god of death and destruction trope is the Winnower from Destiny. (Yes. He is canon. Don't listen to what r/Destinylore tells you, they are just illiterate.)
I'll let him put it best.
did you know that I created you?
Your mind and your body and every thought you've ever had. Your senses. Your consciousness. I made you. Not the gardener, but I.
Did I reach out and place my special mark upon you? No. Nothing so crude.
In the beginning, your world was a garden too. The whole floor of the world-sea was a mat of bacteria, and the very first animals, adorable blobs of ooze, grazed upon that mat in endless idyll. They had no concept of the existence of other beings. Why would they? Their most complex function was a kind of gentle spasm, to scoot forward while they grazed. And if they bumped into each other on that warm seabed, all they did was ooze onward, untroubled. There was nothing to their life except the uptake of carbon compounds from the bacterial bed.
And then—one day—the fall occurred. So much earlier and so much more necessary than your myths remember. Some poor mutant discovered that it could collect carbon compounds much faster if it stopped grazing on the bacterial mat and started dissecting and eating the lumps of predigested carbon all around it: its neighbor oozeballs.
It couldn't help but do it. It couldn't help but thrive. We don't get a choice about the rules. We just play the game.
It was the first defector—the first predator. It changed everything. Now the oozeballs needed sensors to watch for danger, and brains to integrate those senses and generate plans of survival, and swift neurons and muscles to enact that plan. This was the Cambrian Explosion, the great birth of complex life on your world. I caused it. I, the defector, the destroyer, the one who takes.
The thing is. He isn't a god of death and evil. We use his powers for good all the time. The simple act of enforcing laws and justice technically falls into his domain. He doesn't think existence is suffering And he himself says this.
Beings who deserve no thought:
Those who peddle the tired gotcha that all life hastens entropy. They are fatuous little nihilists who pretend to prefer no existence to a flawed one. They bore me.
He just... Believes that existence is a constant battle against all and you have to abide by his law: Exist lest you fail to exist. Essentially he embodies competition and opportunism to the max. The clashing of markets and ideals and laws and nations all serve to fuel him and whatever comes out on top at the end of the day is worthy of existing.
Oryx, my King, my friend. Kick back. Relax. Shrug off that armor, set down that blade. Roll your burdened shoulders and let down your guard. This is a place of life, a place of peace.
Out in the world we ask a simple, true question. A question like, can I kill you, can I rip your world apart? Tell me the truth. For if I don’t ask, someone will ask it of me.
And they call us evil. Evil! Evil means ‘socially maladaptive.’ We are adaptiveness itself.
Ah, Oryx, how do we explain it to them? The world is not built on the laws they love. Not on friendship, but on mutual interest. Not on peace, but on victory by any means. The universe is run by extinction, by extermination, by gamma-ray bursts burning up a thousand garden worlds, by howling singularities eating up infant suns. And if life is to live, if anything is to survive through the end of all things, it will live not by the smile but by the sword, not in a soft place but in a hard hell, not in the rotting bog of artificial paradise but in the cold hard self-verifying truth of that one ultimate arbiter, the only judge, the power that is its own metric and its own source—existence, at any cost. Strip away the lies and truces and delaying tactics they call ‘civilization’ and this is what remains, this beautiful shape.
And it is majestic. Majestic. It is the only thing that can be true in and of itself.
What I fucking love about him is the way he talks.
You did? Nice. Anyways I just want to say that I am a big fan of your work and you should keep at it, even if you don't like me back."
Since Tumblr Users will watch/play literally anything as long as there are lesbians and Yuri in it. I'm planning on tricking Tumblr users into reading the Quantum Thief by telling them one of the Main Characters is a mean Finnish space lesbian warrior from the Oort Cloud with wings and a fusion reactor in her thigh looking for her lost lover and also she does all the fighting while the male MC does the mind games and stealing just for them to experience 3 books worth of post-singularity mindfuck and esoteric quantum physics ending with the creation of a universe using a literal Big Bang gun.
Also the other MC steals one of Saturn's rings and announces he will do it as it's too late to stop it.
Please read the Quantum Thief it's so good. I'm still on book 1 because I read at an absolutely glacial pace but it's so good. Basically it's set after some mysterious singularity/collapse with the Solar System divided between a clan of quantum entanglement weeb gamers who cherish free will and possibility and a clan of seven legendary founders and their trillions of mind copies who want to remove quantum uncertainty from the universe and remove suffering by reviving every human ever bornand have no regard for privacy or free will.
The Main Character is basically Sci-fi Arsene Lupin who has been trapped in a dilemma prison where he has to play the prisoner's dilemma with countless other versions of himself until he reforms until he is rescued by said mean Finnish space lesbian who is hired by one of the factions for a mysterious job on a moving city on Mars where time is literally currency.
If that appeals to you then fair warning that the author has a degree in mathematical physics and boy does he expect you to have one too. There is basically no handholding. He just throws this world at you and tells you "Figure it out loser" using context clues. That's probably why this series never took off outside of sci-fi nerd spaces.
incomprehensible xeelee meme #4
Always remember, a brief life burns brightly.
I love the Interim Coalition of Government so fucking much. They're so entertaining. Like The Imperium of Man from 40K at least goes "Well it's necessary that we throw babies with deformities down furnaces because something something Horus Heresy something something Eldar." The ICOG on the other hand just go "Yeah we turn pubescent girls into the fucking Tleilax axlotl tank from Dune as soon as they start bleeding before throwing the harvested babies into combat against an enemy that doesn't know and doesn't care that they exist as soon as they hit 16. Fuck are you going to do about it?"
They're the type of faction that would make the Dark Eldar vomit, Slaanesh recoil in disgust and the Imperium to seem noble and righteous. The Imperium at least tries to make some pretenses of doing the right thing, caring about humanity and has a basic concept of stuff like Heroism, Empathy and Family. The ICOG is a well oiled machine lasting 20 thousand years who's entire purpose is to make humans suffer and live like vermin because they have such a crippling insecurity complex. They are human cockroaches who's entire purpose is to suffer unnecessarily and get petty revenge against all life because of their wounded ego.
Their entire culture is destruction and suffering because that's all they know. They have basically bred the concept of Individuality, Empathy, Family and Heroism out of Humanity to the point that they literally arrest both you and your past/future self (Because literally every faction in the Xeelee sequence that has FTL also has time travel) and they use this to crush any dissent. They made child abuse a government policy and turned an entire caste of women into living babyfactories in conditions that would make Dunes tleilax axlotl tank seem humane. They are literally just space Skaven.
Their equivalent of the Imperial Guard and Space Marines would be a bunch of 16 year old child soldiers (Because they see being a child soldiers as the highest calling in life) with guns that literally fire the Big Bang using Trench Warfare against Time Travelling eldritch Gods from the first attoseconds of the Big Bang who are actively trying to save all life and weren't fucking aware that the Humans had devoted their entire civilization and ten (or maybe it was thirty) trillion lives just to defeat a single one of them in the Galactic core.
I love them. They are so funny. they're basically a human version of the Skaven. You may not like it but this is what peak totalitarian empire is like.
