Massimo Vitali, born in 1944, is an Italian photographer based principally in Lucca, Tuscany. Vitali studied photography at the London College of Printing and spent many years working as a photojournalist and a move camera operator.
In 1995 he took on fine art photography. The result has been series of beautiful photographs shot using an 18ft scaffold, and usually consisting of the general public leisurely enjoying breathtaking beach scenes. Vitali asserts that although photography has a long history of using shadow as a prominent tool, he prefers to shoot light, white and blue expanses.
Vitali also happens to live in a deconsecrated 14th century church, which he opened to Mr Porter for a profile last year - which the bottom two pictures exhibit.
