Ever since I've heard about CW doing the Riverdale series, I was beyond excited. Growing up, Archie comics has been my go-to entertainment. I learned spelling and grammar just by reading these books. I even named my late dog Archie just because I love the books so much. So imagine my inner kid finally watching these comic book characters come to life! I looked forward to the trailer, but I was frowning when I started watching it. How did this become a mystery-murder type of show? I was disappointed, but I still had to watch it. Maybe this plot twist will make it worth the while. Good points. 1. The songs. It suits the story and the scene. Catchy and new. I'm downloading these songs as soon as I'm finish with this "review". 2. Fred Andrews. The perfect father figure. 3. Veronica Lodge. Pretty and kind and very assertive. The Ronnie Lodge I know. Who would have thought I'd like Ron over good ol' Betty Cooper. At this point, I would stop with the positive, because the rest of the show is just begging to be criticized. Spoiler alert! Here goes. 1. Archie Andrews. Yes he's a hunk and he may be a casanova, but to have an illicit affair with a teacher, that's beyond him. 2. Betty Cooper. When did she become so needy? Sure she loves Archie, but she was never a pathetic girl who begs for his attention. She is strong and is a hero on her own, she doesn't need anyone standing up for her. But here, she's just weak. A direct insult to her comic book character. 3. Jughead Jones. Where was his insatiable appetite? His ability to inhale burgers and not care about anything around him. He's THE most likeable character in the comics! He is smart and jolly and is always one step ahead of everyone. Not to mention his loyalty to Archie. Now he's just this brooding character who writes stories about the people around him. So un-Jughead like. The total antithesis of Jughead! 4. Moose Mason. He's supposed to be big and stupid but still lovable. Here he's just a jerk who is possibly gay? Gasp! How is this even happening? 5. Ms. Grundy. Egad! She's a hot, YOUNG teacher? Like seriously, what were the writers thinking? She was this English teacher who may be strict, but her students would always be her first love. She loves teaching, and one of her most admirable traits was her dedication to teaching. Her role in this show is just outrageous! Overall, this show has assassinated every one of my childhood characters. This just became another teen drama filled with angst, jealousy, revenge and well, drama. Where was the humor? Or the witty lines? Even the comics, with its single bubble dialogue, have better lines than those in the show. The lines here were bland and even cringe-worthy. It really is possible to ruin everything you've ever loved in 40 minutes. Will I continue watching? Why yes! Because despite everything, there is still suspense and if you're not a fan of the comics, it's something you would still hang onto, and of course I still hope they would start salvaging the characters' reputation. I get that this is an adaptation, and is subject to interpretation, but at least save some of the distinguishing traits of these characters. Don't make this into just another teen show. Make it count.
