Three-dimensional scatter plot showing the change in crime rates per 100,000 from 2012-2013 for California cities with more than 150,000 people.
Maloy Moore and I spent 10 months entering details from a hand written ledger of Los Angeles County's cremated. Those that aren't picked up, about three-quarters, end up buried in one mass grave after three years. The spreadsheet and interactive graphic went up first. Story came out Sunday and a follow-up "how we did it" Monday.
Ben Welsh and I whipped up this map showing which precincts went to Sheila Kuehl and which to Bobby Shriver. It was one of the closest races in the election.
We did a primary map back in June.
The map took life as a six column graphic in the next day's paper.
My first motion graphic! With the talented Soumya Karlamangla reporting and narrating. We wanted to simply illustrate how regular intersections differ from diagonal crosswalks, which will come to L.A. soon.
A bit late posting here, but the writer game was a lot of fun to make with Paul Duginksi and the LAT book folks.
Where can you afford to live in Southern California?
If you're like a lot of folks, it ain't gonna be downtown. With home prices continuing to rebound and rental properties becoming more expensive, poorer people are pushed to the fringes of the city in their search for affordable housing. Or they spend 50% of their income it. This map of six Southern California counties calculates the mortgage rate, insurance and other factors to figure out where you can afford to rent a house or a two-bedroom apartment.
It took about six weeks to nail this project down after starting. Most of the work involved organizing and cleaning data, as these projects always do. The home data is from DataQuick and the rental data is from Trulia.
Trulia just gave us the data, which is so sweet! I deal with public agencies who blatantly ignore their requirements under the California Public Records Act. So a for-profit entity handing over data warms my heart.
One weird thing about this project involves the fact that the data is stored in CartoDB and pulled via a Javascript-injected SQL query. Here ya go!
"SELECT cartodb_id, the_geom, the_geom_webmercator, city, county, dataquick, zip, (trulia*"+bedrooms+") AS tru_dub, (((dataquick - " + downPmt + ") * ( ((" + rate + ")*POWER((1 + ("+rate+")),("+years+"*12)) ) / ( POWER((1+("+rate+")),("+years+"*12)) -1) )) * 12 *"+years+") + ((dataquick - "+downPmt+")*"+closeCost+") + (dataquick*"+propertyTax+") + ("+monthlyDebts+"*12*"+years+") + (dataquick*"+homeIns+") + (dataquick*"+maintenance+") + ("+closeCost+"*dataquick) AS total_home, (((dataquick - " + downPmt + ") * ( ((" + rate + ")*POWER((1 + ("+rate+")),("+years+"*12)) ) / ( POWER((1+("+rate+")),("+years+"*12)) -1) ))) + (dataquick*"+propertyTax+"/12) + (dataquick*"+homeIns+"/12) + ((dataquick*"+maintenance+")/12) + ((dataquick*"+closeCost+")/"+years+"/12) AS monthly_home, CASE WHEN (trulia*"+bedrooms+") < (((dataquick - " + downPmt + ") * ( ((" + rate + ")*POWER((1 + ("+rate+")),("+years+"*12)) ) / ( POWER((1+("+rate+")),("+years+"*12)) -1) ))) + (dataquick*"+propertyTax+"/12) + (dataquick*"+homeIns+"/12) + ((dataquick*"+maintenance+")/12) + ((dataquick*"+closeCost+")/"+years+"/12) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END AS should_rent FROM socal_zips_data"
What's happening in Ukraine right now? Well this map helps to tell you out. For months this Ukraine interactive sat in a folder on my Desktop. Raoul Rañoa resurrected it with the help of Carol Williams.
