Hopes & Expecations for Miles Morales’ PS5 Game Pt. 1

So with details of the upcoming game getting clarified by Insomniacs (it’s a full fledged spin-off, not glorified DLC), I figured I would throw out there some predictions and expectations for the game.

First off I know the immediate expectations is for Aaron Davis to be the Big Bad of the game. His reveal as the Prowler was pivotal moment of Miles’ origins in the comics, and got included memorably in the Spider-Verse movie. I’m actually hoping the game breaks the trend though. Actually do have the Prowler in the backdrop of the game (kind of like Felicia’s role prior to the DLC) or even as a Secret Boss like The Taskmaster. Instead with the Prowler, I’d have it so the post-credits sequel hook reveals that The Prowler is secretly under the employ of Norman Osborn, who is still searching for a cure for Harry. This would tie Miles back into the central storyline of Spider-Man 2.

So instead of Aaron Davis being the Big Bad, I’m actually hoping it is Techno Golem. For those who do not know her, Techno Golem, or Tomoe, was a teenaged inhuman with the ability to manipulate technology. An orphan, Tomoe’s newfound abilities allowed her to overthrow and take control of a crime syndicate in Japan. My prediction here is that the central storyline could be about Tomoe putting a hit out on Mr. Negative’s life and Miles grappling with the decision if he wants to save the man who is responsible for his dad’s death.

Another reason why I think Tomoe would be a fitting big bad is that it would explain why Peter is seemingly getting removed from the board here. This incarnation of Peter Parker, more than any other, is really reliant on his tech and gadgets. Tomoe getting the jump on him and taking him out of commission with his own gadgets would go a long way to show why Miles is going to have to be reliant on his natural abilities. And if you look at some of the mooks that Miles is fighting in the trailer, their tech definitely favors her gang’s.

More than anything else, I think Tomoe is a character with a lot of potential. The game did a fantastic job at reinventing Mr. Negative’s character and I feel like they can do the same with her. Bendis created her pretty late in his last run at Marvel, and most of the characterization she got tended to fall into Dragon Lady trope. I think the most interesting thing he did with her was actually the two-parter she appeared in Miles’ book, where she took an interest in him because she assumed he was superpowered orphan just like her. The issue implied that she wanted to recruit him into her organization.

I kind of hate it but I'm still optimistic. I have to assume that with setting, editing, lighting, all that jazz... this will be given context that will hopefully make it look better.

But oh damn, oh god no...it just looks so awkward and weird and ugly.

Remember that this is my personal opinion and I'm still trying to keep an open mind. I have no other opinions at this time as this is all I have to go off of.
